Eclesiastes 9

1 I considered all this in my heart and declared that the righteous and their works are in the hand of God. No man knows if love or hatred awaits him in the future.
1 Deveras todas estas coisas considerei no meu coração, para declarar tudo isto: que os justos, e os sábios, e as suas obras, estão nas mãos de Deus, e também o homem não conhece nem o amor nem o ódio; tudo passa perante ele.
2 The same thing comes to all. There is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrifices and to him that does not sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; and he that swears, as he that fears and refrains from an oath.
2 Tudo sucede igualmente a todos; o mesmo sucede ao justo e ao ímpio, ao bom e ao puro, como ao impuro; assim ao que sacrifica como ao que não sacrifica; assim ao bom como ao pecador; ao que jura como ao que teme o juramento.
3 This evil is in all things that are done under the sun. There is one event that comes to all. The heart of the sons of men is full of evil. Madness is in their heart while they live. After that they go to the dead die.
3 Este é o mal que há entre tudo quanto se faz debaixo do sol; a todos sucede o mesmo; e que também o coração dos filhos dos homens está cheio de maldade, e que há desvarios no seu coração enquanto vivem, e depois se vão aos mortos.
4 Whoever is joined to all the living has hope. A living dog is better than a dead lion.
4 Ora, para aquele que está entre os vivos há esperança (porque melhor é o cão vivo do que o leão morto).
5 The living know that they will die! The dead do not know anything. They do not have any more reward. Their memory is forgotten.
5 Porque os vivos sabem que hão de morrer, mas os mortos não sabem coisa nenhuma, nem tampouco terão eles recompensa, mas a sua memória fica entregue ao esquecimento.
6 Their love, their hatred, and their envy, is now gone, perished! They do not share anything that is done under the sun.
6 Também o seu amor, o seu ódio, e a sua inveja já pereceram, e já não têm parte alguma para sempre, em coisa alguma do que se faz debaixo do sol.
7 Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart for God now accepts your works.
7 Vai, pois, come com alegria o teu pão e bebe com coração contente o teu vinho, pois já Deus se agrada das tuas obras.
8 Let your garments be always white; and let your head lack no ointment.
8 Em todo o tempo sejam alvas as tuas roupas, e nunca falte o óleo sobre a tua cabeça.
9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of the life he has given you under the sun, all the days of your vanity. That is your share in this life and in your labor under the sun.
9 Goza a vida com a mulher que amas, todos os dias da tua vida vã, os quais Deus te deu debaixo do sol, todos os dias da tua vaidade; porque esta é a tua porção nesta vida, e no teu trabalho, que tu fizeste debaixo do sol.
10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you are going.
10 Tudo quanto te vier à mão para fazer, faze-o conforme as tuas forças, porque na sepultura, para onde tu vais, não há obra nem projeto, nem conhecimento, nem sabedoria alguma.
11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift. The battle is not to the strong. Bread does not go to the wise, or riches to men of understanding. Men of skill do not always receive favor, but time and unexpected circumstance happens to them all.
11 Voltei-me, e vi debaixo do sol que não é dos ligeiros a carreira, nem dos fortes a batalha, nem tampouco dos sábios o pão, nem tampouco dos prudentes as riquezas, nem tampouco dos entendidos o favor, mas que o tempo e a oportunidade ocorrem a todos.
12 For man does not know his time. Like fish caught in an evil net, and like birds caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them.
12 que também o homem não sabe o seu tempo; assim como os peixes que se pescam com a rede maligna, e como os passarinhos que se prendem com o laço, assim se enlaçam também os filhos dos homens no mau tempo, quando cai de repente sobre eles.
13 I have seen this wisdom under the sun, and it seemed important to me.
13 Também vi esta sabedoria debaixo do sol, que para mim foi grande:
14 There was a little city with a small population. A great king moved against it. He built great bulwarks against it and attacked it.
14 Houve uma pequena cidade em que havia poucos homens, e veio contra ela um grande rei, e a cercou e levantou contra ela grandes baluartes;
15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man. By his wisdom he delivered the city. Yet no man remembered that same poor man.
15 E encontrou-se nela um sábio pobre, que livrou aquela cidade pela sua sabedoria, e ninguém se lembrava daquele pobre homem.
16 Then I said: »Wisdom is better than strength.« Nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
16 Então disse eu: Melhor é a sabedoria do que a força, ainda que a sabedoria do pobre foi desprezada, e as suas palavras não foram ouvidas.
17 The words of the wise heard in quietness are more than the loud cry of the ruler of fools.
17 As palavras dos sábios devem em silêncio ser ouvidas, mais do que o clamor do que domina entre os tolos.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, yet one sinner destroys much good.
18 Melhor é a sabedoria do que as armas de guerra, porém um só pecador destrói muitos bens.
