1 The group of prophets Elisha was in charge of complained to him: »The place where we live is too small!
1 E os filhos dos profetas disseram a Eliseu: Eis que, agora, o lugar onde habitamos contigo é demasiadamente apertado para nós.
2 »Allow us to go to the Jordan and cut down some trees. We can build a place to live.« Elisha answered: »Go.«
2 Vamos, nós te rogamos, até ao Jordão, e de lá tome cada homem uma viga, e façamos ali um lugar onde nós possamos habitar. E ele respondeu: Ide vós.
3 One of them urged him to go with them and he agreed.
3 E um disse: Sê contente, rogo-te, e vai com os teus servos. E ele respondeu: Eu irei.
4 They set out together and when they arrived at the Jordan they cut down trees.
4 Assim, ele foi com eles. E, quando eles chegaram até o Jordão, cortaram madeira.
5 One of them was cutting down a tree when suddenly his ax head fell in the water. It was a borrowed ax, he exclaimed to Elisha. »What will I do?«
5 Porém, enquanto um deles estava derrubando um tronco, a lâmina do machado caiu dentro da água; e ele gritou e disse: Ai, mestre! Isto era emprestado.
6 Elisha said: »Where did it fall?« The man showed him the place. Elisha cut off a stick. Then he threw it in the water and made the ax head float.
6 E o homem de Deus disse: Onde ele caiu? E ele lhe mostrou o lugar. E ele arrancou um galho, e o lançou ali dentro; e o ferro flutuou.
7 »Pick it up,« he ordered. The man put his hand in the water and picked it up.
7 Portanto, disse ele: Toma-o para ti. E ele estendeu a sua mão e o apanhou.
8 The king of Syria was at war with Israel. He consulted his officers and chose a place to set up camp.
8 Então, o rei da Síria guerreou contra Israel e tomou conselho com os seus servos, dizendo: Em tal e tal lugar será o meu acampamento.
9 Elisha sent word to the king of Israel. He warned him not to go near that place, because the Syrians were waiting to ambush him.
9 E o homem de Deus enviou ao rei de Israel, dizendo: Acautela-te para que não passes em tal lugar; porque para lá desceram os sírios.
10 The king of Israel warned the people who lived there. So they were on guard. This happened several times.
10 E o rei de Israel enviou para o lugar sobre o qual o homem de Deus lhe contara, e de que o alertara, e ali salvou-se, não uma nem duas vezes.
11 The Syrian king was greatly upset over this. He called in his officers and asked them: »Show me who of us is on the side of the king of Israel?«
11 Portanto, o coração do rei da Síria ficou mui turbado por esta coisa; e ele chamou os seus servos, e disse-lhes: Não me mostrareis vós qual de nós é pelo rei de Israel?
12 One of his servants said: »No one is, Your Majesty. The prophet Elisha tells the king of Israel what you say even in the privacy of your own bedroom.«
12 E um dos seus servos disse: Nenhum, meu senhor, ó rei; mas Eliseu, o profeta que está em Israel, conta ao rei de Israel as palavras que tu falas na tua câmara de dormir.
13 »Locate him!« the king ordered, »and I will capture him. He was told: »Elisha is in Dothan.«
13 E ele disse: Vai e espiona onde ele está, para que eu possa mandar apanhá-lo. E contaram-lhe, dizendo: Eis que ele está em Dotã.
14 He sent a large force there with horses and chariots. They surrounded the town at night.
14 Portanto, ele para lá enviou cavalos, e carruagens, e um grande exército; e eles vieram à noite, e impuseram um cerco à cidade.
15 Early the next morning Elisha's servant got up and went out of the house. He saw the Syrian troops with their horses and chariots surrounding the town. He went to Elisha and said: »Alas my master what shall we do?«
15 E, quando o servo do homem de Deus havia se levantado cedo, e saído, eis que um exército cercava a cidade tanto com cavalos, quanto com carruagens. E o seu servo disse a ele: Ai, meu mestre! Como faremos?
16 »Do not be afraid,« Elisha answered. »We have more on our side than they have on theirs.«
16 E ele respondeu: Não temas; porque aqueles que estão conosco são mais do que aqueles que estão com eles.
17 Elisha prayed: »O Jehovah, open his eyes that he may see.« Jehovah answered his prayer. Elisha's servant looked up and saw the hillside covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
17 E Eliseu orou, e disse: SENHOR, rogo-te que abra os seus olhos para que ele possa enxergar. E o SENHOR abriu os olhos do moço; e ele viu; e eis que, o monte estava cheio de cavalos e carruagens de fogo ao redor de Eliseu.
18 The Syrians attacked! Elisha prayed, »O Jehovah, strike these men blind!« Jehovah answered his prayer and struck them blind.
18 E quando eles desceram até ele, Eliseu orou ao SENHOR, e disse: Fere este povo, rogo-te, com cegueira. E ele os feriu com cegueira, segundo a palavra de Eliseu.
19 Elisha said to the Syrians: »This is not the way or the town you are looking for. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are after.« He led them to Samaria.
19 E Eliseu disse-lhes: Esse não é o caminho, nem é esta a cidade; segui-me, e eu vos trarei até o homem a quem buscais. Ele, porém, conduziu-lhes até Samaria.
20 When they entered the city, Elisha prayed: »Open their eyes and let them see.« Jehovah answered his prayer. He restored their sight, and they saw that they were inside Samaria.
20 E sucedeu, quando eles haviam chegado em Samaria, que Eliseu disse: SENHOR, abre os olhos destes homens, para que possam enxergar. E o SENHOR abriu os seus olhos, e eles viram; e, eis que, eles estavam no meio de Samaria.
21 When the king of Israel saw the Syrians, he asked Elisha: »Shall I kill them?«
21 E o rei de Israel disse a Eliseu, quando os viu: Meu pai, devo feri-los? Devo feri-los?
22 »No,« Elisha answered. »Would you put to death soldiers you captured in combat? Give them something to eat and drink. Then let them return to their king.«
22 E ele respondeu: Tu não os ferirás; feririas tu aqueles aos quais tomastes cativo com a tua espada e com o teu arco? Põe pão e água diante deles para que possam comer e beber, e se vão para o seu mestre.
23 So the king of Israel provided a great feast for them. After they ate and drank he sent them back to the king of Syria. From then on the Syrians stopped raiding the land of Israel.
23 E ele preparou grande provisão para eles; e quando eles haviam comido e bebido, ele os despediu, e foram até o seu mestre. Assim, os bandos da Síria não mais adentraram a terra de Israel.
24 After that King Benhadad of Syria led his entire army against Israel in siege of the city of Samaria.
24 E sucedeu, depois disso, que Ben-Hadade, rei da Síria, reuniu todo o seu exército, e subiu, e sitiou Samaria.
25 The siege caused a great food shortage in the city. It was so severe that a donkey's head cost eighty pieces of silver, and half a pound of dove's dung cost five pieces of silver.
25 E houve uma grande fome em Samaria; e, eis que eles a sitiaram, até que uma cabeça de jumento foi vendida por oitenta peças de prata, e a quarta parte de um cabo de esterco de pombas por cinco peças de prata.
26 The king of Israel walked by on the city wall when a woman cried out: »Help me, Your Majesty!«
26 E enquanto o rei de Israel estava passando por cima do muro, gritou ali uma mulher, dizendo: Socorro, meu senhor, ó rei.
27 The king replied: »If Jehovah will not help you, what help can I provide? Where can I get you help from the threshing floor or the wine press?«
27 E ele disse: Se o SENHOR não te ajudar, de onde te ajudarei? Da eira ou do lagar?
28 The king asked: »What is your trouble?« She answered: »The other day a woman suggested that we eat my child. Then we could eat her child the next day.
28 E o rei disse-lhe: O que te aflige? E ela respondeu: Esta mulher disse para mim: Dá o teu filho, para que possamos comê-lo hoje, e amanhã comeremos o meu filho.
29 »So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I told her that we would eat her son, but she had hidden him!«
29 Assim, nós cozinhamos o meu filho, e o comemos; e eu disse a ela no dia seguinte: Dá o teu filho, para que possamos comê-lo, e ela havia escondido o seu filho.
30 Hearing this, the king tore his clothes. The people close to the wall could see that he was wearing sackcloth under his clothes.
30 E sucedeu, quando o rei ouviu as palavras da mulher, que ele rasgou as suas vestes; e passou por cima do muro, e o povo olhou e, eis que ele tinha pano de saco por dentro, sobre a sua carne.
31 He exclaimed: »May God strike me dead if Elisha is not beheaded before the day is over!«
31 Então, ele disse: Deus assim faça, e mais ainda a mim, se a cabeça de Eliseu, o filho de Safate, estiver firme sobre ele neste dia.
32 He sent a messenger to get Elisha. Meanwhile Elisha was at home with some elders who were visiting him. Before the messenger arrived, Elisha said to the elders: »That murderer is sending someone to kill me! When he gets here, shut the door. Do not let him come in. The king will follow him.«
32 Eliseu, porém, estava assentado na sua casa, e os anciãos se assentavam com ele; e o rei enviou um homem adiante de si, mas antes que o mensageiro chegasse até ele, disse ele aos anciãos: Vede vós como este filho de um assassino mandou me cortarem a cabeça? Vede, quando o mensageiro vier, fechai a porta, e contenham-no firmemente junto à porta; o som dos pés do seu mestre não está atrás dele?
33 While Elisha was still talking the king arrived and said: »Jehovah brought this trouble on us! Why should I wait any longer for him to do something?«
33 E enquanto ele ainda conversava com eles, eis que o mensageiro desceu até ele; e ele disse: Eis que este mal é do SENHOR; o que mais eu deveria esperar do SENHOR?
