1 I speak the truth in Christ, I do not speak falsely, my conscience bearing me witness, in the Holy Spirit,
1 Eu digo a verdade em Cristo, eu não minto; a minha consciência também me dá testemunho no Espírito Santo,
2 that I have great grief and unceasing anguish, in my heart,
2 que eu tenho grande pesar e contínua tristeza no meu coração.
3 for my brethren, -my kinsmen, according to the flesh; (for I also was, myself, wishing to be accursed from Christ:)
3 Porque eu mesmo desejava ser amaldiçoado de Cristo, por meus irmãos, meus parentes segundo a carne;
4 who are Israelites; whose are the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the rites of service, and the promises;
4 que são israelitas, aos quais pertence a adoção, e a glória, e os pactos, e a entrega da lei, e o serviço de Deus, e as promessas;
5 whose are the fathers; and from whom the Messiah descended, according to the flesh; who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
5 dos quais são os pais, e dos quais, segundo a carne, veio Cristo, que é sobre todos, Deus bendito para sempre. Amém.
6 Now, it is not to be supposed that the promise of God has failed; for all the descendants of Israel are not Israel.
6 Não, porém, que a palavra de Deus tenha perdido o seu efeito, porque nem todos os que são de Israel são israelitas.
7 «Neither are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but» 'In Isaac shall your seed be called.'
7 Nem por serem a semente de Abraão, são todos filhos; mas, em Isaque será chamada a tua semente.
8 That is, the children of the flesh are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted for seed.
8 Isto é: Os que são filhos da carne, estes não são filhos de Deus, mas os filhos da promessa são considerados como semente.
9 «For the word of promise was this,» 'According to this time, I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.'
9 Porque esta é a palavra da promessa: Por este tempo eu virei, e Sara terá um filho.
10 And not only this, but Rebecca, also, having conceived twins, by one, even Isaac our father;
10 E não somente isso, mas também quando Rebeca concebeu de um, de nosso pai Isaque;
11 (they, indeed, not being yet born; neither having done any good or evil; that the purpose of God might stand, by an election; not on account of works, but of him who calls:)
11 (porque, não tendo os filhos ainda nascido, nem tendo feito algo bom ou mal, para que o propósito de Deus pudesse permanecer segundo a eleição, não por obras, mas por aquele que chama),
12 «it was said to her,'The elder shall serve the younger';»
12 isto foi dito a ela: O mais velho servirá ao mais jovem.
13 «as it is written,» 'Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have slighted.'
13 Como está escrito: Jacó eu tenho amado, mas Esaú eu tenho odiado.
14 What shall we, then, say? Is there not injustice with God?
14 O que diremos então? Há em Deus injustiça? De forma alguma!
15 «By no means. For he says to Moses,» 'I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.'
15 Porque ele diz a Moisés: Eu terei misericórdia de quem eu tiver misericórdia, e eu terei compaixão de quem eu tiver compaixão.
16 So, then, it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs; but of God, who shows mercy.
16 Assim, pois, não é daquele que quer, nem daquele que corre, mas de Deus, que manifesta misericórdia.
17 «Besides, the scripture says to Pharaoh,» 'Even for this same purpose I have roused you up; that I might show, in you, my power; and that my name might be published through all the earth.'
17 Porque a escritura diz a faraó: Para este mesmo propósito eu te levantei; para mostrar o meu poder em ti, e para que o meu nome seja declarado em toda a terra.
18 Well, then, he has mercy on whom he will; and whom he will, he hardens.
18 Portanto, ele tem misericórdia de quem ele quer ter misericórdia, e endurece a quem quer.
19 But you will say to me, Why does he still find fault, for who has resisted his will?
19 Tu dirás a mim então: Por que ele ainda achou culpa? Pois quem tem resistido à sua vontade?
20 Nay, but, O man, who are you, who reply against God? Shall the thing formed, say to him who formed it, Why have you made me thus?
20 Mas, ó homem, quem és tu, para que contestes a Deus? Dirá a coisa formada ao que a formou: Por que tu me fizeste assim?
21 Has not the potter a just power over the clay, to make of the same lump one vessel to honor, and another to dishonor?
21 Não tem o oleiro poder sobre o barro, para da mesma massa fazer um vaso para honra e outro para desonra?
22 Yet God, willing to show his wrath, and make know his power, did bear, with much long-suffering, the vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction.
22 E se Deus, disposto a demonstrar a sua ira e dar a conhecer o seu poder, suportou com muita paciência os vasos da ira, preparados para a destruição,
23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory, on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory:
23 para que ele também desse a conhecer as riquezas da sua glória nos vasos de misericórdia, que antes ele já preparou para glória,
24 even us, whom he has called; not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.
24 até nós, a quem ele chamou, não só dentre os judeus, mas também dentre os gentios?
25 «Even as he says, by Hosea,» 'They shall be called my people, who were not my people; and she beloved, who was not beloved.'
25 Assim como ele também diz em Oseias: Eu os chamarei meu povo, os quais não eram meu povo; e amada à que não era amada.
26 «And it shall come to pass, in the place where it was said to them, You are not my people; there they shall be called, Sons of the living God.»
26 E acontecerá que, no lugar em que lhes foi dito: Vós não sois meu povo; ali serão chamados filhos do Deus vivo.
27 «Besides, Isaiah cries, concerning Israel,» 'Through the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant shall be saved.'
27 Isaías também clamava acerca de Israel: Ainda que o número dos filhos de Israel seja como a areia do mar, o remanescente será salvo;
28 «For he was about to complete and hasten his work in righteousness; for a short work will the Lord make upon this land.»
28 porque ele concluirá a obra e a abreviará em justiça; porque o Senhor fará breve a obra sobre a terra.
29 «And, as Isaiah has said before,» 'Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we should have become as Sodom, and been made like to Gomorrah.'
29 E como Isaías disse antes: Se o Senhor Sabaoth não nos tivesse deixado semente, teríamos nos tornado como Sodoma, e teríamos sido feitos semelhante a Gomorra.
30 What shall we say, then, that the Gentiles, who did not seek after justification, have attained justification, even a justification which is by faith?
30 O que diremos então? Que os gentios, que não seguiam a justiça, alcançaram justiça, a justiça que é pela fé.
31 But Israel, who followed a law of justification, have not attained to a law of justification.
31 Mas Israel, que seguia a lei da justiça, não alcançou a lei da justiça.
32 Why? Because they sought it not by faith; but, as it were, by works of law: for they stumbled, at the stone of stumbling.
32 Por quê? Porque eles não a buscaram pela fé, mas como que pelas obras da lei; pois eles tropeçaram na pedra de tropeço.
33 «As it is written,» 'Behold, I place in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whosoever believes on it, shall not be ashamed.'
33 Como está escrito: Eis que eu ponho em Sião uma pedra de tropeço, e uma rocha de ofensa; e todo aquele que crer nela não será envergonhado.
