1 A good name is better than precious oil, and the day of death, better than the day of ones birth.
1 Um bom nome é melhor do que um perfume finíssimo, e o dia da morte é melhor do que o dia do nascimento.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; inasmuch as that is the end of all men: and let the living lay it to his heart.
2 É melhor ir a uma casa onde há luto do que a uma casa em festa, pois a morte é o destino de todos; os vivos devem levar isso a sério!
3 Better is vexation than laughing; for through the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
3 A tristeza é melhor do que o riso, porque o rosto triste melhora o coração.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of joy.
4 O coração do sábio está na casa onde há luto, mas o dos tolos, na casa da alegria.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than that a man should hear the song of fools.
5 É melhor ouvir a repreensão de um sábio do que a canção dos tolos.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. Also this is vanity.
6 Tal como o estalo de espinhos debaixo da panela, assim é o riso dos tolos. Isso também não faz sentido.
7 For exercising oppression maketh a wise man mad; and bribery corrupteth the heart.
7 A opressão transforma o sábio em tolo, e o suborno corrompe o coração.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: better is the patient in spirit than the proud in spirit.
8 O fim das coisas é melhor do que o seu início, e o paciente é melhor que o orgulhoso.
9 Be not rash in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in bosom of fools.
9 Não permita que a ira domine depressa o seu espírito, pois a ira se aloja no íntimo dos tolos.
10 Thou must not say, How was it that the former days were better than these? for it is not out of wisdom that thou askest concerning this.
10 Não diga: "Por que os dias do passado foram melhores que os de hoje? " Pois não é sábio fazer tais perguntas.
11 Wisdom is better than an inheritance, yea, preferable for those that see the sun;
11 A sabedoria, como uma herança, é coisa boa e beneficia aqueles que vêem o sol.
12 For under the shadow of wisdom a man is equally well as under the shadow of money; but the superior excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to him that possesseth it.
12 A sabedoria oferece proteção, como o faz o dinheiro, mas a vantagem do conhecimento é esta: a sabedoria preserva a vida de quem a possui.
13 Consider then the work of God; for who can make straight what he hath made crooked?
13 Considere o que Deus fez: Quem pode endireitar o que ele fez torto?
14 On the day of prosperity be happy, but on the day of adversity look on: also this hath God made in equal measure with the other, to the end that man should not find the least to censure him.
14 Quando os dias forem bons, aproveite-os bem; mas, quando forem ruins, considere: Deus fez tanto um quanto o outro, para evitar que o homem descubra qualquer coisa sobre o seu futuro.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is many a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is many a wicked man that liveth long in his wickedness.
15 Nesta vida sem sentido eu já vi de tudo: um justo que morreu apesar da sua justiça, e um ímpio que teve vida longa apesar da sua impiedade.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither show thyself over wise: why wouldst thou destroy thyself?
16 Não seja excessivamente justo nem demasiadamente sábio; por que destruir-se a si mesmo?
17 Be not wicked over much, and be no fool: why wouldst thou die before thy time?
17 Não seja demasiadamente ímpio e não seja tolo; por que morrer antes do tempo?
18 It is good that thou shouldst take hold of that, and that also from this thou withdraw not thy hand; for he that feareth God will come forth out of them all.
18 É bom reter uma coisa e não abrir mão da outra, pois quem teme a Deus evitará ambos os extremos.
19 Wisdom giveth more strength to the wise than ten rulers which were in the city.
19 A sabedoria torna o sábio mais poderoso que uma cidade guardada por dez valentes.
20 For no man is so righteous upon earth, that he should do always good, and never sin.
20 Todavia, não há um só justo na terra, ninguém que pratique o bem e nunca peque.
21 Also take no heed unto all the words that are spoken: lest thou hear thy servant cursing thee.
21 Não dê atenção a todas as palavras que o povo diz, caso contrário, poderá ouvir o seu próprio servo falando mal de você;
22 For oftentimes also doth thy own heart know that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
22 pois em seu coração você sabe que muitas vezes você mesmo também falou mal de outros.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
23 Tudo isso eu examinei mediante a sabedoria e disse: Estou decidido a ser sábio; mas isso estava fora do meu alcance.
24 Far is what formerly was so, and what was deep remaineth deep: who can find it out?
24 A realidade está bem distante e é muito profunda; quem pode descobri-la?
25 Then I turned myself about together with my heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and experience, and to know the wickedness of folly, and the foolishness of madness.
25 Por isso dediquei-me a aprender, a investigar, a buscar a sabedoria e a razão de ser das coisas, para compreender a insensatez da impiedade e a loucura da insensatez.
26 And I find as more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are bonds: he that is deemed good before God will escape from her; but the sinner will be caught by her.
26 Descobri que muito mais amarga do que a morte é a mulher que serve de laço, cujo coração é uma armadilha e cujas mãos são correntes. O homem que agrada a Deus escapará dela, mas ao pecador ela apanhará.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith Koheleth, adding one to the other, to find experience,
27 "Veja", diz o Mestre, "foi isto que descobri: Ao comparar uma coisa com outra para descobrir a sua razão de ser,
28 What my soul constantly sought, but I found it not; one man among a thousand did I find; but a woman among all these did I not find.
28 sim, durante essa minha busca que ainda não terminou, entre mil homens, descobri apenas um que julgo digno, mas entre as mulheres não achei uma sequer.
29 Lo, this only did I find, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought for many sinful devices.
29 Assim, cheguei a esta conclusão: Deus fez os homens justos, mas eles foram em busca de muitas intrigas. "
