Eclesiastes 1

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
1 Estas são as palavras do Mestre, filho de Davi, que reinou em Jerusalém.
2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all [is] vanity.
2 “Nada faz sentido”, diz o Mestre. “Nada faz o menor sentido.”
3 What profit does a man have of all his labour which he takes under the sun?
3 O que as pessoas ganham com todo o seu árduo trabalho debaixo do sol?
4 [One] generation passes away, and [another] generation comes, but the earth abides for ever.
4 Gerações vêm e gerações vão, mas a terra permanece a mesma.
5 The sun arises, and the sun goes down, and with desire returns to his place from which he arises again.
5 O sol nasce, o sol se põe e, logo, retorna a seu lugar para nascer outra vez.
6 The wind goes toward the south and turns about unto the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to its circuits.
6 O vento sopra para o sul, depois para o norte; dá voltas e mais voltas, soprando em círculos.
7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea [is] not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, there they return again.
7 Os rios correm para o mar, mas ele nunca se enche; a água retorna aos rios e corre novamente para o mar.
8 All things [are] full of labour; more [than] man can express; the eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with hearing.
8 Tudo é tão cansativo que não há como descrever. Não importa quanto vemos, nunca ficamos satisfeitos; não importa quanto ouvimos, nunca nos contentamos.
9 The thing that has been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done; and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
9 A história simplesmente se repete. O que foi feito antes será feito outra vez. Nada debaixo do sol é realmente novo.
10 Is there [any] thing of which it may be said, See, this [is] new? it has been already of old time which was before us.
10 De vez em quando, alguém diz: “Isto é novidade!”. O fato, porém, é que nada é realmente novo.
11 [There is] no remembrance of former [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after.
11 Não nos lembramos do que aconteceu no passado, e as gerações futuras tampouco se lembrarão do que fazemos hoje.
12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
12 Eu, o Mestre, fui rei de Israel e vivi em Jerusalém.
13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all [things] that are done under heaven (this sore travail God has given to the sons of man that they be occupied in it).
13 Dediquei-me a buscar o entendimento e a usar a sabedoria para examinar tudo que se faz debaixo do céu. Descobri que Deus deu uma existência trágica à humanidade.
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
14 Observei tudo que acontece debaixo do sol e, de fato, nada faz sentido; é como correr atrás do vento.
15 [That which is] crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is lacking cannot be numbered.
15 O que está errado não pode ser corrigido; o que ainda falta não pode ser recuperado.
16 I communed with my own heart, saying, Behold, I am come to great estate and have gotten more wisdom than all [those] that have been before me in Jerusalem; and my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
16 Disse a mim mesmo: “Sou mais sábio que todos os reis que governaram em Jerusalém antes de mim. Tenho mais sabedoria e conhecimento que eles”.
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom and knowledge and to know folly and [those who are] mad; I learned [in the end] that this also is vexation of spirit.
17 Então me dediquei a aprender de tudo: desde a sabedoria até a loucura e a insensatez. Descobri, por experiência, que procurar essas coisas também é como correr atrás do vento.
18 For in much wisdom [is] much grief, and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.:
18 Quanto maior a sabedoria, maior a aflição; quanto maior o conhecimento, maior a tristeza.
