1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
1 Palavras do Pregador, filho de Davi, rei de Jerusalém.
2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all [is] vanity.
2 Vaidade de vaidades, diz o Pregador. Vaidade de vaidades! Tudo é vaidade.
3 What profit does a man have of all his labour which he takes under the sun?
3 Que proveito alguém tem de todo o seu trabalho, com que se afadiga debaixo do sol?
4 [One] generation passes away, and [another] generation comes, but the earth abides for ever.
4 Geração vai e geração vem, mas a terra permanece para sempre.
5 The sun arises, and the sun goes down, and with desire returns to his place from which he arises again.
5 O sol se levanta, e o sol se põe, e volta ao seu lugar, onde nasce de novo.
6 The wind goes toward the south and turns about unto the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to its circuits.
6 O vento vai para o sul e faz o seu giro para o norte; dá voltas e mais voltas e retorna aos seus circuitos.
7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea [is] not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, there they return again.
7 Todos os rios correm para o mar, e o mar não se enche; ao lugar para onde correm os rios, para lá eles voltam a correr.
8 All things [are] full of labour; more [than] man can express; the eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with hearing.
8 Todas as coisas são canseiras tais, que ninguém as pode exprimir; os olhos não se fartam de ver, nem os ouvidos se enchem de ouvir.
9 The thing that has been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done; and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
9 O que foi é o que há de ser; e o que se fez, isso se tornará a fazer; não há nada de novo debaixo do sol.
10 Is there [any] thing of which it may be said, See, this [is] new? it has been already of old time which was before us.
10 Será que existe alguma coisa de que se possa dizer: “Veja! Isto é novo!”? Não! Já existiu em tempos passados, muito antes de nós.
11 [There is] no remembrance of former [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after.
11 Já não há lembrança das coisas que se foram; e das coisas que ainda virão também não haverá memória entre os que hão de vir depois delas.
12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
12 Eu, o Pregador, venho sendo rei de Israel, em Jerusalém.
13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all [things] that are done under heaven (this sore travail God has given to the sons of man that they be occupied in it).
13 Dediquei-me a investigar e a me informar com sabedoria a respeito de tudo o que se faz debaixo do céu. Que enfadonho trabalho Deus impôs aos filhos dos homens, para com ele os afligir!
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
14 Vi todas as obras que se fazem debaixo do sol, e eis que tudo é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
15 [That which is] crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is lacking cannot be numbered.
15 Aquilo que é torto não pode ser endireitado; e o que falta não pode ser contado.
16 I communed with my own heart, saying, Behold, I am come to great estate and have gotten more wisdom than all [those] that have been before me in Jerusalem; and my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
16 Eu disse a mim mesmo: “Eu me tornei importante e superei em sabedoria todos os que governaram em Jerusalém antes de mim. O meu coração tem tido larga experiência da sabedoria e do conhecimento.”
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom and knowledge and to know folly and [those who are] mad; I learned [in the end] that this also is vexation of spirit.
17 Assim, procurei conhecer a sabedoria e saber o que é a tolice e a falta de juízo; mas descobri que também isto é correr atrás do vento.
18 For in much wisdom [is] much grief, and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.:
18 Porque na muita sabedoria há muito enfado; e quem aumenta o seu conhecimento aumenta também a sua dor.
