1 Then Job answered and said:
1 Então Jó respondeu:
2 No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
2 "Sem dúvida vocês são o povo, e a sabedoria morrerá com vocês!
3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you; yea, who knoweth not such things as these?
3 Mas eu tenho a mesma capacidade de pensar que vocês têm; não sou inferior a vocês. Quem não sabe dessas coisas?
4 I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbour, a man that called upon God, and He answered him; the just, the innocent man is a laughing-stock,
4 "Tornei-me objeto de riso para os meus amigos, eu que clamava a Deus e ele me respondia, eu, íntegro e irrepreensível, um mero objeto de riso!
5 A contemptible brand in the thought of him that is at ease, a thing ready for them whose foot slippeth.
5 Quem está bem despreza a desgraça, o destino daqueles cujos pés escorregam.
6 The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure, in whatsoever God bringeth into their hand.
6 As tendas dos saqueadores não sofrem perturbação, e aqueles que provocam a Deus estão seguros, aqueles que transportam o seu deus em suas mãos.
7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee;
7 "Pergunte, porém, aos animais, e eles o ensinarão, ou às aves do céu, e elas lhe contarão;
8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee;
8 fale com a terra, e ela o instruirá, deixe que os peixes do mar o informem.
9 Who knoweth not among all these, that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
9 Quem de todos eles ignora que a mão do Senhor fez isso?
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.--
10 Em sua mão está a vida de cada criatura e o fôlego de toda a humanidade.
11 Doth not the ear try words, even as the palate tasteth its food?
11 O ouvido não experimenta as palavras como a língua experimenta a comida?
12 Is wisdom with aged men, and understanding in length of days?--
12 A sabedoria se acha entre os idosos? A vida longa traz entendimento?
13 With Him is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.
13 "Deus é que tem sabedoria e poder; a ele pertencem o conselho e o entendimento.
14 Behold, He breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
14 O que ele derruba não se pode reconstruir; aquele a quem ele aprisiona ninguém pode libertar.
15 Behold, He withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; also He sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.
15 Se ele retém as águas, predomina a seca; se as solta, devastam a terra.
16 With Him is strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.
16 A ele pertencem a força e a sabedoria; tanto o enganado quanto o enganador a ele pertencem.
17 He leadeth counsellors away stripped, and judges maketh He fools.
17 Ele despoja e demite os conselheiros, e faz os juízes de tolos.
18 He looseth the bond of kings, and bindeth their loins with a girdle.
18 Tira as algemas postas pelos reis, e amarra uma faixa em torno da cintura deles.
19 He leadeth priests away stripped, and overthroweth the mighty.
19 Despoja e demite os sacerdotes, e arruína os homens de sólida posição.
20 He removeth the speech of men of trust, and taketh away the sense of the elders.
20 Cala os lábios dos conselheiros de confiança, e tira o discernimento dos anciãos.
21 He poureth contempt upon princes, and looseth the belt of the strong.
21 Derrama desprezo sobre os nobres, e desarma os poderosos.
22 He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.
22 Revela coisas profundas das trevas, e traz à luz densas sombras.
23 He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them; He enlargeth the nations, and leadeth them away.
23 Dá grandeza às nações, e as destrói; faz crescer as nações, e as dispersa.
24 He taketh away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the land, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
24 Priva da razão os líderes da terra, e os envia a perambular num deserto sem caminhos.
25 They grope in the dark without light, and He maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
25 Andam tateando nas trevas, sem nenhuma luz; ele os faz cambalear como bêbados.
