1 Then Job answered and said:
1 Então em resposta Jó disse:
2 No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
2 “Sem dúvida, vocês são a voz do povo, e, quando morrerem, não haverá mais sabedoria…
3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you; yea, who knoweth not such things as these?
3 Mas eu também entendo as coisas e não sou menos do que vocês. Quem não sabe isso que vocês disseram?
4 I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbour, a man that called upon God, and He answered him; the just, the innocent man is a laughing-stock,
4 “Sou motivo de riso para os meus amigos — eu, que sou honesto, que estou inocente; eu, que orava a Deus, e ele me respondia.
5 A contemptible brand in the thought of him that is at ease, a thing ready for them whose foot slippeth.
5 Os que estão seguros desprezam os desgraçados e empurram os que estão para cair.
6 The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure, in whatsoever God bringeth into their hand.
6 Os bandidos têm paz em suas casas, os que ofendem a Deus vivem tranquilos, embora o seu deus seja a sua própria força.
7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee;
7 “Zofar, faça perguntas às aves e aos animais, e eles o ensinarão.
8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee;
8 Peça aos bichos da terra e aos peixes do mar, e eles lhe darão lições.
9 Who knoweth not among all these, that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
9 Todas essas criaturas sabem que foi a mão do
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.--
10 A vida de todas as criaturas está na mão de Deus; é ele quem mantém todas as pessoas com vida.
11 Doth not the ear try words, even as the palate tasteth its food?
11 Meus amigos, assim como os ouvidos julgam o valor das palavras, e o paladar prova os alimentos, assim escuto o que vocês dizem, mas só aceito aquilo que acho certo.
12 Is wisdom with aged men, and understanding in length of days?--
12 “Os velhos são sábios, pois a idade traz a compreensão.
13 With Him is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.
13 No entanto, Deus é sábio e poderoso; ele tem inteligência e entendimento.
14 Behold, He breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
14 Ninguém pode reconstruir o que Deus derruba; e, se ele prende, ninguém pode soltar.
15 Behold, He withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; also He sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.
15 Quando Deus segura a chuva, vem a seca; quando deixa saírem as águas, há enchentes.
16 With Him is strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.
16 “Deus é forte e vitorioso; ele tem poder tanto sobre o enganado como sobre o enganador.
17 He leadeth counsellors away stripped, and judges maketh He fools.
17 Ele tira das autoridades a sabedoria e faz com que os líderes percam o juízo.
18 He looseth the bond of kings, and bindeth their loins with a girdle.
18 Deus tira os reis dos seus tronos e os põe na prisão.
19 He leadeth priests away stripped, and overthroweth the mighty.
19 Deus afasta os sacerdotes do seu ofício; ele derruba os que estão no poder.
20 He removeth the speech of men of trust, and taketh away the sense of the elders.
20 Deus faz calarem conselheiros de confiança e acaba com a sabedoria dos idosos.
21 He poureth contempt upon princes, and looseth the belt of the strong.
21 Ele mostra desprezo pelas autoridades e acaba com a força dos poderosos.
22 He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.
22 Deus revela os segredos escondidos nas trevas e faz a luz brilhar na escuridão mais completa.
23 He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them; He enlargeth the nations, and leadeth them away.
23 Deus dá às nações grandeza e poder, mas depois as derrota e destrói.
24 He taketh away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the land, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
24 Ele faz com que os líderes das nações percam o juízo e os leva por desertos sem caminhos.
25 They grope in the dark without light, and He maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
25 Eles andam na escuridão, às cegas, tropeçando como bêbados.
