1 Man, that is born of a woman, Is of few days, and full of trouble.
1 “Todos somos fracos desde o nascimento; a nossa vida é curta e muito agitada.
2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
2 O ser humano é como a flor que se abre e logo murcha; como uma sombra ele passa e desaparece.
3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, And bringest me into judgment with thee?
3 Nada somos; então por que nos dás atenção? E quem sou eu para que me leves ao tribunal?
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
4 O ser humano, que é impuro, nunca produz nada que seja puro.
5 Seeing his days are determined, The number of his months is with thee, And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
5 Tu já marcaste quantos meses e dias cada um vai viver; isso está resolvido, e ninguém pode mudar.
6 Look away from him, that he may rest, Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.
6 Para de olhar para nós e deixa-nos em paz, até que o nosso dia chegue ao fim, como chega ao fim o dia de um trabalhador.
7 For there is hope of a tree, If it be cut down, that it will sprout again, And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
7 “Para uma árvore há esperança; se for cortada, brota de novo e torna a viver.
8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, And the stock thereof die in the ground;
8 Mesmo que as suas raízes envelheçam, e o seu toco morra na terra,
9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, And put forth boughs like a plant.
9 basta um pouco de água, e ela brota, soltando galhos como uma planta nova.
10 But man dieth, and is laid low: Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
10 Mas, quando alguém morre, está acabado; depois de entregar a alma, para onde vai?
11 As the waters fail from the sea, And the river wasteth and drieth up;
11 “Como lagoas que secam, como rios que deixam de correr,
12 So man lieth down and riseth not: Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, Nor be roused out of their sleep.
12 assim, enquanto o céu existir, todos vamos morrer. Vamos dormir o sono da morte, para nunca mais levantar.
13 Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
13 “Ah! Se tu me pusesses no mundo dos mortos e ali me escondesses até que a tua e então marcasses um prazo para lembrares de mim!
14 If a man die, shall he live again ? All the days of my warfare would I wait, Till my release should come.
14 Mas será que alguém tornará a viver depois de ter morrido? Eu, porém, esperarei por melhores tempos, até que as minhas lutas acabem.
15 Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee: Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.
15 Então me chamarás, e eu responderei; e tu ficarás contente comigo, pois me criaste.
16 But now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?
16 Cuidarás para que eu não erre, em vez de ficares espiando para me veres pecar.
17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.
17 Esquecerás os meus pecados e apagarás os meus erros.
18 But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place;
18 “Mas assim como as montanhas vão se desmoronando, e as rochas saem dos seus lugares;
19 The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man.
19 e assim como as águas escavam as pedras, e as correntezas levam a terra, assim tu acabas com a esperança do ser humano.
20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
20 Tu o derrotas, ele se vai para sempre, e mudas a sua aparência quando o despedes deste mundo.
21 His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
21 Se os seus filhos recebem homenagens, ele não fica sabendo e, se caem na desgraça, ele não tem notícia.
22 But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.
22 Ele sente apenas as dores do seu próprio corpo e a agonia do seu espírito.”
