2 Samuel 19

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

1 And it was told|strong="H5046" Joab|strong="H3097", Behold, the king|strong="H4428" weepeth|strong="H1058" and mourneth|strong="H0056" for Absalom|strong="H0053".

2 And the victory|strong="H8668" that day|strong="H3117" was turned into mourning|strong="H0060" unto all the people|strong="H5971": for the people|strong="H5971" heard|strong="H8085" say|strong="H0559" that day|strong="H3117" how the king|strong="H4428" was grieved|strong="H6087" for his son|strong="H1121".

3 And the people|strong="H5971" gat|strong="H0935" them by stealth|strong="H1589" that day|strong="H3117" into the city|strong="H5892", as people|strong="H5971" being ashamed|strong="H3637" steal away|strong="H1589" when they flee|strong="H5127" in battle|strong="H4421".

4 But the king|strong="H4428" covered|strong="H3813" his face|strong="H6440", and the king|strong="H4428" cried|strong="H2199" with a loud|strong="H1419" voice|strong="H6963", O my son|strong="H1121" Absalom|strong="H0053", O Absalom|strong="H0053", my son|strong="H1121", my son|strong="H1121"!

5 And Joab|strong="H3097" came|strong="H0935" into the house|strong="H1004" to the king|strong="H4428", and said|strong="H0559", Thou hast shamed|strong="H3001" this day|strong="H3117" the faces|strong="H6440" of all thy servants|strong="H5650", which this day|strong="H3117" have saved|strong="H4422" thy life|strong="H5315", and the lives|strong="H5315" of thy sons|strong="H1121" and of thy daughters|strong="H1323", and the lives|strong="H5315" of thy wives|strong="H0802", and the lives|strong="H5315" of thy concubines|strong="H6370";

6 In that thou lovest|strong="H0157" thine enemies|strong="H8130", and hatest|strong="H8130" thy friends|strong="H0157". For thou hast declared|strong="H5046" this day|strong="H3117", that thou regardest neither princes|strong="H8269" nor servants|strong="H5650": for this day|strong="H3117" I perceive|strong="H3045", that if|strong="H3863" Absalom|strong="H0053" had lived|strong="H2416", and all we had died|strong="H4191" this day|strong="H3117", then it had pleased thee well|strong="H3477".

7 Now therefore arise|strong="H6965", go forth|strong="H3318", and speak|strong="H1696" comfortably|strong="H3820" unto thy servants|strong="H5650": for I swear|strong="H7650" by the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, if thou go not forth|strong="H3318", there will not tarry|strong="H3885" one|strong="H0376" with thee this night|strong="H3915": and that will be worse|strong="H7489" unto thee than all the evil|strong="H7451" that befell|strong="H0935" thee from thy youth|strong="H5271" until now.

8 Then the king|strong="H4428" arose|strong="H6965", and sat|strong="H3427" in the gate|strong="H8179". And they told|strong="H5046" unto all the people|strong="H5971", saying|strong="H0559", Behold, the king|strong="H4428" doth sit|strong="H3427" in the gate|strong="H8179". And all the people|strong="H5971" came|strong="H0935" before|strong="H6440" the king|strong="H4428": for Israel|strong="H3478" had fled|strong="H5127" every man|strong="H0376" to his tent|strong="H0168".

9 And all the people|strong="H5971" were at strife|strong="H1777" throughout all the tribes|strong="H7626" of Israel|strong="H3478", saying|strong="H0559", The king|strong="H4428" saved|strong="H5337" us out of the hand|strong="H3709" of our enemies|strong="H0341", and he delivered|strong="H4422" us out of the hand|strong="H3709" of the Philistines|strong="H6430"; and now he is fled|strong="H1272" out of the land|strong="H0776" for Absalom|strong="H0053".

10 And Absalom|strong="H0053", whom we anointed|strong="H4886" over us, is dead|strong="H4191" in battle|strong="H4421". Now therefore why speak|strong="H2790" ye not a word of bringing|strong="H7725" the king|strong="H4428" back|strong="H7725"?

11 And king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" to Zadok|strong="H6659" and to Abiathar|strong="H0054" the priests|strong="H3548", saying|strong="H0559", Speak|strong="H1696" unto the elders|strong="H2205" of Judah|strong="H3063", saying|strong="H0559", Why are ye the last|strong="H0314" to bring|strong="H7725" the king|strong="H4428" back|strong="H7725" to his house|strong="H1004"? seeing the speech|strong="H1697" of all Israel|strong="H3478" is come|strong="H0935" to the king|strong="H4428", even to his house|strong="H1004".

12 Ye are my brethren|strong="H0251", ye are my bones|strong="H6106" and my flesh|strong="H1320": wherefore then are ye the last|strong="H0314" to bring back|strong="H7725" the king|strong="H4428"?

13 And say|strong="H0559" ye to Amasa|strong="H6021", Art thou not of my bone|strong="H6106", and of my flesh|strong="H1320"? God|strong="H0430" do|strong="H6213" so to me, and more|strong="H3254" also, if thou be not captain|strong="H8269" of the host|strong="H6635" before|strong="H6440" me continually|strong="H3117" in the room|strong="H8478" of Joab|strong="H3097".

14 And he bowed|strong="H5186" the heart|strong="H3824" of all the men|strong="H0376" of Judah|strong="H3063", even as the heart of one|strong="H0259" man|strong="H0376"; so that they sent|strong="H7971" this word unto the king|strong="H4428", Return|strong="H7725" thou, and all thy servants|strong="H5650".

15 So the king|strong="H4428" returned|strong="H7725", and came|strong="H0935" to Jordan|strong="H3383". And Judah|strong="H3063" came|strong="H0935" to Gilgal|strong="H1537", to go|strong="H3212" to meet|strong="H7125" the king|strong="H4428", to conduct|strong="H5674" the king|strong="H4428" over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383".

16 And Shimei|strong="H8096" the son|strong="H1121" of Gera|strong="H1617", a Benjamite|strong="H1145", which was of Bahurim|strong="H0980", hasted|strong="H4116" and came down|strong="H3381" with the men|strong="H0376" of Judah|strong="H3063" to meet|strong="H7125" king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732".

17 And there were a thousand|strong="H0505" men|strong="H0376" of Benjamin|strong="H1145" with him, and Ziba|strong="H6717" the servant|strong="H5288" of the house|strong="H1004" of Saul|strong="H7586", and his fifteen|strong="H2568" sons|strong="H1121" and his twenty|strong="H6242" servants|strong="H5650" with him; and they went over|strong="H6743" Jordan|strong="H3383" before|strong="H6440" the king|strong="H4428".

18 And there went over|strong="H5674" a ferry boat|strong="H5679" to carry over|strong="H5674" the king’s|strong="H4428" household|strong="H1004", and to do|strong="H6213" what he thought|strong="H5869" good|strong="H2896". And Shimei|strong="H8096" the son|strong="H1121" of Gera|strong="H1617" fell down|strong="H5307" before|strong="H6440" the king|strong="H4428", as he was come over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383";

19 And said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", Let not my lord|strong="H0113" impute|strong="H2803" iniquity|strong="H5771" unto me, neither do thou remember|strong="H2142" that which thy servant|strong="H5650" did perversely|strong="H5753" the day|strong="H3117" that my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428" went out|strong="H3318" of Jerusalem|strong="H3389", that the king|strong="H4428" should take|strong="H7760" it to his heart|strong="H3820".

20 For thy servant|strong="H5650" doth know|strong="H3045" that I have sinned|strong="H2398": therefore, behold, I am come|strong="H0935" the first|strong="H7223" this day|strong="H3117" of all the house|strong="H1004" of Joseph|strong="H3130" to go down|strong="H3381" to meet|strong="H7125" my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428".

21 But Abishai|strong="H0052" the son|strong="H1121" of Zeruiah|strong="H6870" answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", Shall not Shimei|strong="H8096" be put to death|strong="H4191" for this, because he cursed|strong="H7043" the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* anointed|strong="H4899"?

22 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559", What have I to do with you, ye sons|strong="H1121" of Zeruiah|strong="H6870", that ye should this day|strong="H3117" be adversaries|strong="H7854" unto me? shall there any man|strong="H0376" be put to death|strong="H4191" this day|strong="H3117" in Israel|strong="H3478"? for do not I know|strong="H3045" that I am this day|strong="H3117" king|strong="H4428" over Israel|strong="H3478"?

23 Therefore the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto Shimei|strong="H8096", Thou shalt not die|strong="H4191". And the king|strong="H4428" sware|strong="H7650" unto him.

24 And Mephibosheth|strong="H4648" the son|strong="H1121" of Saul|strong="H7586" came down|strong="H3381" to meet|strong="H7125" the king|strong="H4428", and had neither|strong="H3808" dressed|strong="H6213" his feet|strong="H7272", nor trimmed|strong="H6213" his beard|strong="H8222", nor washed|strong="H3526" his clothes|strong="H0899", from the day|strong="H3117" the king|strong="H4428" departed|strong="H3212" until the day|strong="H3117" he came|strong="H0935" again in peace|strong="H7965".

25 And it came to pass, when he was come|strong="H0935" to Jerusalem|strong="H3389" to meet|strong="H7125" the king|strong="H4428", that the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Wherefore wentest|strong="H1980" not thou with me, Mephibosheth|strong="H4648"?

26 And he answered|strong="H0559", My lord|strong="H0113", O king|strong="H4428", my servant|strong="H5650" deceived|strong="H7411" me: for thy servant|strong="H5650" said|strong="H0559", I will saddle|strong="H2280" me an ass|strong="H2543", that I may ride|strong="H7392" thereon, and go|strong="H3212" to the king|strong="H4428"; because thy servant|strong="H5650" is lame|strong="H6455".

27 And he hath slandered|strong="H7270" thy servant|strong="H5650" unto my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428"; but my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428" is as an angel|strong="H4397" of God|strong="H0430": do|strong="H6213" therefore what is good|strong="H2896" in thine eyes|strong="H5869".

28 For all of my father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004" were but|strong="H3808" dead|strong="H4194" men|strong="H0582" before my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428": yet didst thou set|strong="H7896" thy servant|strong="H5650" among them that did eat|strong="H0398" at thine own table|strong="H7979". What right|strong="H6666" therefore have|strong="H3426" I yet to cry|strong="H2199" any more unto the king|strong="H4428"?

29 And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Why speakest|strong="H1696" thou any more of thy matters|strong="H1697"? I have said|strong="H0559", Thou and Ziba|strong="H6717" divide|strong="H2505" the land|strong="H7704".

30 And Mephibosheth|strong="H4648" said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", Yea, let him take|strong="H3947" all, forasmuch|strong="H0310" as|strong="H0834" my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428" is come again|strong="H0935" in peace|strong="H7965" unto his own house|strong="H1004".

31 And Barzillai|strong="H1271" the Gileadite|strong="H1569" came down|strong="H3381" from Rogelim|strong="H7274", and went over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383" with the king|strong="H4428", to conduct|strong="H7971" him over Jordan|strong="H3383".

32 Now Barzillai|strong="H1271" was a very|strong="H3966" aged|strong="H2204" man, even fourscore|strong="H8084" years|strong="H8141" old|strong="H1121": and he had provided the king|strong="H4428" of sustenance|strong="H3557" while he lay|strong="H7871" at Mahanaim|strong="H4266"; for he was a very|strong="H3966" great|strong="H1419" man|strong="H0376".

33 And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto Barzillai|strong="H1271", Come thou over|strong="H5674" with me, and I will feed|strong="H3557" thee with me in Jerusalem|strong="H3389".

34 And Barzillai|strong="H1271" said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", How long|strong="H3117" have I to live|strong="H8141", that I should go up|strong="H5927" with the king|strong="H4428" unto Jerusalem|strong="H3389"?

35 I am this day|strong="H3117" fourscore|strong="H8084" years|strong="H8141" old|strong="H1121": and can I discern|strong="H3045" between good|strong="H2896" and evil|strong="H7451"? can thy servant|strong="H5650" taste|strong="H2938" what|strong="H0834" I eat|strong="H0398" or what|strong="H0834" I drink|strong="H8354"? can I hear|strong="H8085" any more the voice|strong="H6963" of singing men|strong="H7891" and singing women|strong="H7891"? wherefore then should thy servant|strong="H5650" be yet a burden|strong="H4853" unto my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428"?

36 Thy servant|strong="H5650" will go|strong="H5674" a little way|strong="H4592" over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383" with the king|strong="H4428": and why should the king|strong="H4428" recompense|strong="H1580" it me with such a reward|strong="H1578"?

37 Let thy servant|strong="H5650", I pray thee, turn back again|strong="H7725", that I may die|strong="H4191" in mine own city|strong="H5892", and be buried by the grave|strong="H6913" of my father|strong="H0001" and of my mother|strong="H0517". But behold thy servant|strong="H5650" Chimham|strong="H3643"; let him go over|strong="H5674" with my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428"; and do|strong="H6213" to him what shall seem good|strong="H2896" unto thee.

38 And the king|strong="H4428" answered|strong="H0559", Chimham|strong="H3643" shall go|strong="H5674" over with me, and I will do|strong="H6213" to him that which shall seem good|strong="H2896" unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require|strong="H0977" of me, that will I do|strong="H6213" for thee.

39 And all the people|strong="H5971" went over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383". And when the king|strong="H4428" was come over|strong="H5674", the king|strong="H4428" kissed|strong="H5401" Barzillai|strong="H1271", and blessed|strong="H1288" him; and he returned|strong="H7725" unto his own place|strong="H4725".

40 Then the king|strong="H4428" went on|strong="H5674" to Gilgal|strong="H1537", and Chimham|strong="H3643" went on|strong="H5674" with him: and all the people|strong="H5971" of Judah|strong="H3063" conducted|strong="H5674" the king|strong="H4428", and also half|strong="H2677" the people|strong="H5971" of Israel|strong="H3478".

41 And, behold, all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" came|strong="H0935" to the king|strong="H4428", and said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", Why have our brethren|strong="H0251" the men|strong="H0376" of Judah|strong="H3063" stolen thee away|strong="H1589", and have brought|strong="H5674" the king|strong="H4428", and his household|strong="H1004", and all David’s|strong="H1732" men|strong="H0582" with him, over Jordan|strong="H3383"?

42 And all the men|strong="H0376" of Judah|strong="H3063" answered|strong="H6030" the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478", Because the king|strong="H4428" is near of kin|strong="H7138" to us: wherefore then be ye angry|strong="H2734" for this matter|strong="H1697"? have we eaten|strong="H0398" at all|strong="H0398" of the king’s|strong="H4428" cost? or hath he given|strong="H5375" us any gift|strong="H5379"?

43 And the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" answered|strong="H6030" the men|strong="H0376" of Judah|strong="H3063", and said|strong="H0559", We have ten|strong="H6235" parts|strong="H3027" in the king|strong="H4428", and we|strong="H0589" have also more right in David|strong="H1732" than ye: why then did ye despise|strong="H7043" us, that our advice|strong="H1697" should not be first|strong="H7223" had in bringing back|strong="H7725" our king|strong="H4428"? And the words|strong="H1697" of the men|strong="H0376" of Judah|strong="H3063" were fiercer|strong="H7185" than the words|strong="H1697" of the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478".
