2 Samuel 13

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

1 And it came to pass after|strong="H0310" this, that Absalom|strong="H0053" the son|strong="H1121" of David|strong="H1732" had a fair|strong="H3303" sister|strong="H0269", whose name|strong="H8034" was Tamar|strong="H8559"; and Amnon|strong="H0550" the son|strong="H1121" of David|strong="H1732" loved|strong="H0157" her.

2 And Amnon|strong="H0550" was so vexed|strong="H3334", that he fell sick|strong="H2470" for his sister|strong="H0269" Tamar|strong="H8559"; for she was a virgin|strong="H1330"; and Amnon|strong="H0550" thought|strong="H5869" it hard|strong="H6381" for him to do|strong="H6213" any thing|strong="H3972" to her.

3 But Amnon|strong="H0550" had a friend|strong="H7453", whose name|strong="H8034" was Jonadab|strong="H3122", the son|strong="H1121" of Shimeah|strong="H8093" David’s|strong="H1732" brother|strong="H0251": and Jonadab|strong="H3122" was a very|strong="H3966" subtil|strong="H2450" man|strong="H0376".

4 And he said|strong="H0559" unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s|strong="H4428" son|strong="H1121", lean|strong="H1800" from day|strong="H1242" to day|strong="H1242"? wilt thou not tell|strong="H5046" me? And Amnon|strong="H0550" said|strong="H0559" unto him, I love|strong="H0157" Tamar|strong="H8559", my brother|strong="H0251" Absalom’s|strong="H0053" sister|strong="H0269".

5 And Jonadab|strong="H3082" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Lay thee down|strong="H7901" on thy bed|strong="H4904", and make thyself sick|strong="H2470": and when thy father|strong="H0001" cometh|strong="H0935" to see|strong="H7200" thee, say|strong="H0559" unto him, I pray thee, let my sister|strong="H0269" Tamar|strong="H8559" come|strong="H0935", and give|strong="H1262" me meat|strong="H3899", and dress|strong="H6213" the meat|strong="H1279" in my sight|strong="H5869", that I may see|strong="H7200" it, and eat|strong="H0398" it at her hand|strong="H3027".

6 So Amnon|strong="H0550" lay down|strong="H7901", and made himself sick|strong="H2470": and when the king|strong="H4428" was come|strong="H0935" to see|strong="H7200" him, Amnon|strong="H0550" said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", I pray thee, let Tamar|strong="H8559" my sister|strong="H0269" come|strong="H0935", and make|strong="H3823" me a couple|strong="H8147" of cakes|strong="H3834" in my sight|strong="H5869", that I may eat|strong="H1262" at her hand|strong="H3027".

7 Then David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" home|strong="H1004" to Tamar|strong="H8559", saying|strong="H0559", Go|strong="H3212" now to thy brother|strong="H0251" Amnon’s|strong="H0550" house|strong="H1004", and dress|strong="H6213" him meat|strong="H1279".

8 So Tamar|strong="H8559" went|strong="H3212" to her brother|strong="H0251" Amnon’s|strong="H0550" house|strong="H1004"; and he was laid down|strong="H7901". And she took|strong="H3947" flour|strong="H1217", and kneaded|strong="H3888" it, and made cakes|strong="H3823" in his sight|strong="H5869", and did bake|strong="H1310" the cakes|strong="H3834".

9 And she took|strong="H3947" a pan|strong="H4958", and poured them out|strong="H3332" before|strong="H6440" him; but he refused|strong="H3985" to eat|strong="H0398". And Amnon|strong="H0550" said|strong="H0559", Have out|strong="H3318" all men|strong="H0376" from me. And they went out|strong="H3318" every man|strong="H0376" from him.

10 And Amnon|strong="H0550" said|strong="H0559" unto Tamar|strong="H8559", Bring|strong="H0935" the meat|strong="H1279" into the chamber|strong="H2315", that I may eat|strong="H1262" of thine hand|strong="H3027". And Tamar|strong="H8559" took|strong="H3947" the cakes|strong="H3834" which she had made|strong="H6213", and brought|strong="H0935" them into the chamber|strong="H2315" to Amnon|strong="H0550" her brother|strong="H0251".

11 And when she had brought|strong="H5066" them unto him to eat|strong="H0398", he took hold|strong="H2388" of her, and said|strong="H0559" unto her, Come|strong="H0935" lie|strong="H7901" with me, my sister|strong="H0269".

12 And she answered|strong="H0559" him, Nay, my brother|strong="H0251", do not force|strong="H6031" me; for no such thing ought|strong="H3651" to be done|strong="H6213" in Israel|strong="H3478": do|strong="H6213" not thou this folly|strong="H5039".

13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame|strong="H2781" to go|strong="H3212"? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one|strong="H0259" of the fools|strong="H5036" in Israel|strong="H3478". Now therefore, I pray thee, speak|strong="H1696" unto the king|strong="H4428"; for he will not withhold|strong="H4513" me from thee.

14 Howbeit he would|strong="H0014" not hearken|strong="H8085" unto her voice|strong="H6963": but, being stronger|strong="H2388" than she, forced|strong="H6031" her, and lay|strong="H7901" with her.

15 Then Amnon|strong="H0550" hated|strong="H8130" her exceedingly|strong="H3966"; so that the hatred|strong="H8135" wherewith he hated|strong="H8130" her was greater|strong="H1419" than the love|strong="H0160" wherewith he had loved|strong="H0157" her. And Amnon|strong="H0550" said|strong="H0559" unto her, Arise|strong="H6965", be gone|strong="H3212".

16 And she said|strong="H0559" unto him, There is no cause|strong="H0182": this evil|strong="H7451" in sending me away|strong="H7971" is greater|strong="H1419" than the other|strong="H0312" that thou didst|strong="H6213" unto me. But he would|strong="H0014" not hearken|strong="H8085" unto her.

17 Then he called|strong="H7121" his servant|strong="H5288" that ministered|strong="H8334" unto him, and said|strong="H0559", Put|strong="H7971" now this woman out|strong="H2351" from me, and bolt|strong="H5274" the door|strong="H1817" after|strong="H0310" her.

18 And she had a garment|strong="H3801" of divers colours|strong="H6446" upon her: for with such robes|strong="H4598" were the king’s|strong="H4428" daughters|strong="H1323" that were virgins|strong="H1330" apparelled|strong="H3847". Then his servant|strong="H8334" brought|strong="H3318" her out|strong="H2351", and bolted|strong="H5274" the door|strong="H1817" after|strong="H0310" her.

19 And Tamar|strong="H8559" put|strong="H3947" ashes|strong="H0665" on her head|strong="H7218", and rent|strong="H7167" her garment|strong="H3801" of divers colours|strong="H6446" that was on her, and laid|strong="H7760" her hand|strong="H3027" on her head|strong="H7218", and went|strong="H3212" on|strong="H1980" crying|strong="H2199".

20 And Absalom|strong="H0053" her brother|strong="H0251" said|strong="H0559" unto her, Hath Amnon|strong="H0550" thy brother|strong="H0251" been with thee? but hold now thy peace|strong="H2790", my sister|strong="H0269": he is thy brother|strong="H0251"; regard|strong="H7896" not this thing|strong="H1697". So Tamar|strong="H8559" remained|strong="H3427" desolate|strong="H8074" in her brother|strong="H0251" Absalom’s|strong="H0053" house|strong="H1004".

21 But when king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732" heard|strong="H8085" of all these things|strong="H1697", he was very|strong="H3966" wroth|strong="H2734".

22 And Absalom|strong="H0053" spake|strong="H1696" unto his brother Amnon|strong="H0550" neither good|strong="H2896" nor bad|strong="H7451": for Absalom|strong="H0053" hated|strong="H8130" Amnon|strong="H0550", because|strong="H1697" he had forced|strong="H6031" his sister|strong="H0269" Tamar|strong="H8559".

23 And it came to pass after two full|strong="H3117" years|strong="H8141", that Absalom|strong="H0053" had sheepshearers|strong="H1494" in Baal-hazor|strong="H1178", which is beside Ephraim|strong="H0669": and Absalom|strong="H0053" invited|strong="H7121" all the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121".

24 And Absalom|strong="H0053" came|strong="H0935" to the king|strong="H4428", and said|strong="H0559", Behold now, thy servant|strong="H5650" hath sheepshearers|strong="H1494"; let|strong="H3212" the king|strong="H4428", I beseech thee, and his servants|strong="H5650" go|strong="H3212" with thy servant|strong="H5650".

25 And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" to Absalom|strong="H0053", Nay, my son|strong="H1121", let us not all now go|strong="H3212", lest we be chargeable|strong="H3513" unto thee. And he pressed|strong="H6555" him: howbeit he would|strong="H0014" not go|strong="H3212", but blessed|strong="H1288" him.

26 Then said|strong="H0559" Absalom|strong="H0053", If not, I pray thee, let my brother|strong="H0251" Amnon|strong="H0550" go|strong="H3212" with us. And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Why should he go|strong="H3212" with thee?

27 But Absalom|strong="H0053" pressed|strong="H6555" him, that he let Amnon|strong="H0550" and all the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121" go|strong="H7971" with him.

28 Now Absalom|strong="H0053" had commanded|strong="H6680" his servants|strong="H5288", saying|strong="H0559", Mark|strong="H7200" ye now when Amnon’s|strong="H0550" heart|strong="H3820" is merry|strong="H2896" with wine|strong="H3196", and when I say|strong="H0559" unto you, Smite|strong="H5221" Amnon|strong="H0550"; then kill|strong="H4191" him, fear|strong="H3372" not: have not I commanded|strong="H6680" you? be courageous|strong="H2388", and be valiant|strong="H1121".

29 And the servants|strong="H5288" of Absalom|strong="H0053" did|strong="H6213" unto Amnon|strong="H0550" as Absalom|strong="H0053" had commanded|strong="H6680". Then all the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121" arose|strong="H6965", and every man|strong="H0376" gat him up|strong="H7392" upon his mule|strong="H6505", and fled|strong="H5127".

30 And it came to pass, while they were in the way|strong="H1870", that tidings|strong="H8052" came|strong="H0935" to David|strong="H1732", saying|strong="H0559", Absalom|strong="H0053" hath slain|strong="H5221" all the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121", and there is not one|strong="H0259" of them left|strong="H3498".

31 Then the king|strong="H4428" arose|strong="H6965", and tare|strong="H7167" his garments|strong="H0899", and lay|strong="H7901" on the earth|strong="H0776"; and all his servants|strong="H5650" stood|strong="H5324" by with their clothes|strong="H0899" rent|strong="H7167".

32 And Jonadab|strong="H3122", the son|strong="H1121" of Shimeah|strong="H8093" David’s|strong="H1732" brother|strong="H0251", answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", Let not my lord|strong="H0113" suppose|strong="H0559" that they have slain|strong="H4191" all the young men|strong="H5288" the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121"; for Amnon|strong="H0550" only is dead|strong="H4191": for by the appointment|strong="H6310" of Absalom|strong="H0053" this hath been determined|strong="H7760" from the day|strong="H3117" that he forced|strong="H6031" his sister|strong="H0269" Tamar|strong="H8559".

33 Now therefore let not my lord|strong="H0113" the king|strong="H4428" take|strong="H7760" the thing|strong="H1697" to his heart|strong="H3820", to think|strong="H0559" that all the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121" are dead|strong="H4191": for Amnon|strong="H0550" only is dead|strong="H4191".

34 But Absalom|strong="H0053" fled|strong="H1272". And the young man|strong="H5288" that kept the watch|strong="H6822" lifted up|strong="H5375" his eyes|strong="H5869", and looked|strong="H7200", and, behold, there came|strong="H1980" much|strong="H7227" people|strong="H5971" by the way|strong="H1870" of the hill|strong="H2022" side|strong="H6654" behind|strong="H0310" him.

35 And Jonadab|strong="H3122" said|strong="H0559" unto the king|strong="H4428", Behold, the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121" come|strong="H0935": as thy servant|strong="H5650" said|strong="H1697", so it is.

36 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end|strong="H3615" of speaking|strong="H1696", that, behold, the king’s|strong="H4428" sons|strong="H1121" came|strong="H0935", and lifted up|strong="H5375" their voice|strong="H6963" and wept|strong="H1058": and the king|strong="H4428" also and all his servants|strong="H5650" wept|strong="H1058" very|strong="H3966" sore|strong="H1065".

37 But Absalom|strong="H0053" fled|strong="H1272", and went|strong="H3212" to Talmai|strong="H8526", the son|strong="H1121" of Ammihud|strong="H5991", king|strong="H4428" of Geshur|strong="H1650". And David mourned|strong="H0056" for his son|strong="H1121" every day|strong="H3117".

38 So Absalom|strong="H0053" fled|strong="H1272", and went|strong="H3212" to Geshur|strong="H1650", and was there three|strong="H7969" years|strong="H8141".

39 And the soul of king|strong="H4428" David|strong="H1732" longed|strong="H3615" to go forth|strong="H3318" unto Absalom|strong="H0053": for he was comforted|strong="H5162" concerning Amnon|strong="H0550", seeing he was dead|strong="H4191".
