And it came to pass, when he had made an end|strong="H3615" of speaking|strong="H1696" unto Saul|strong="H7586", that the soul|strong="H5315" of Jonathan|strong="H3083" was knit|strong="H7194" with the soul|strong="H5315" of David|strong="H1732", and Jonathan|strong="H3083" loved|strong="H0157" him as his own soul|strong="H5315".
And Saul|strong="H7586" took|strong="H3947" him that day|strong="H3117", and would let|strong="H5414" him go no more home|strong="H7725" to his father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004".
Then Jonathan|strong="H3083" and David|strong="H1732" made|strong="H3772" a covenant|strong="H1285", because he loved|strong="H0160" him as his own soul|strong="H5315".
And Jonathan|strong="H3083" stripped|strong="H6584" himself of the robe|strong="H4598" that was upon him, and gave|strong="H5414" it to David|strong="H1732", and his garments|strong="H4055", even to his sword|strong="H2719", and to his bow|strong="H7198", and to his girdle|strong="H2289".
And David|strong="H1732" went out|strong="H3318" whithersoever Saul|strong="H7586" sent|strong="H7971" him, and behaved himself wisely|strong="H7919": and Saul|strong="H7586" set|strong="H7760" him over the men|strong="H0582" of war|strong="H4421", and he was accepted|strong="H3190" in the sight|strong="H5869" of all the people|strong="H5971", and also in the sight|strong="H5869" of Saul’s|strong="H7586" servants|strong="H5650".
And it came to pass as they came|strong="H0935", when David|strong="H1732" was returned|strong="H7725" from the slaughter|strong="H5221" of the Philistine|strong="H6430", that the women|strong="H0802" came out|strong="H3318" of all cities|strong="H5892" of Israel|strong="H3478", singing|strong="H7891" and dancing|strong="H4246", to meet|strong="H7125" king|strong="H4428" Saul|strong="H7586", with tabrets|strong="H8596", with joy|strong="H8057", and with instruments of musick|strong="H7991".
And the women|strong="H0802" answered|strong="H6030" one another as they played|strong="H7832", and said|strong="H0559", Saul|strong="H7586" hath slain|strong="H5221" his thousands|strong="H0505", and David|strong="H1732" his ten thousands|strong="H7233".
And Saul|strong="H7586" was very|strong="H3966" wroth|strong="H2734", and the saying|strong="H1697" displeased|strong="H3415" him; and he said|strong="H0559", They have ascribed|strong="H5414" unto David|strong="H1732" ten thousands|strong="H7233", and to me they have ascribed|strong="H5414" but thousands|strong="H0505": and what can he have more but the kingdom|strong="H4410"?
And Saul|strong="H7586" eyed|strong="H5770" David|strong="H1732" from that day|strong="H3117" and forward|strong="H1973".
And it came to pass on the morrow|strong="H4283", that the evil|strong="H7451" spirit|strong="H7307" from God|strong="H0430" came|strong="H6743" upon Saul|strong="H7586", and he prophesied|strong="H5012" in the midst|strong="H8432" of the house|strong="H1004": and David|strong="H1732" played|strong="H5059" with his hand|strong="H3027", as at other times|strong="H3117": and there was a javelin|strong="H2595" in Saul’s|strong="H7586" hand|strong="H3027".
And Saul|strong="H7586" cast|strong="H2904" the javelin|strong="H2595"; for he said|strong="H0559", I will smite|strong="H5221" David|strong="H1732" even to the wall|strong="H7023" with it. And David|strong="H1732" avoided out|strong="H5437" of his presence|strong="H6440" twice|strong="H6471".
And Saul|strong="H7586" was afraid|strong="H3372" of|strong="H6440" David|strong="H1732", because the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* was with him, and was departed|strong="H5493" from Saul|strong="H7586".
Therefore Saul|strong="H7586" removed|strong="H5493" him from him, and made|strong="H7760" him his captain|strong="H8269" over a thousand|strong="H0505"; and he went out|strong="H3318" and came in|strong="H0935" before|strong="H6440" the people|strong="H5971".
And David|strong="H1732" behaved himself wisely|strong="H7919" in all his ways|strong="H1870"; and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* was with him.
Wherefore when Saul|strong="H7586" saw|strong="H7200" that he behaved|strong="H7919" himself very|strong="H3966" wisely|strong="H7919", he was afraid|strong="H1481" of|strong="H6440" him.
But all Israel|strong="H3478" and Judah|strong="H3063" loved|strong="H0157" David|strong="H1732", because he went out|strong="H3318" and came in|strong="H0935" before|strong="H6440" them.
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", Behold my elder|strong="H1419" daughter|strong="H1323" Merab|strong="H4764", her will I give|strong="H5414" thee to wife|strong="H0802": only be thou valiant|strong="H1121" for me, and fight|strong="H3898" the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* battles|strong="H4421". For Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Let not mine hand|strong="H3027" be upon him, but let the hand|strong="H3027" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" be upon him.
And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto Saul|strong="H7586", Who am I? and what is my life|strong="H2416", or my father’s|strong="H0001" family|strong="H4940" in Israel|strong="H3478", that I should be son in law|strong="H2860" to the king|strong="H4428"?
But it came to pass at the time|strong="H6256" when Merab|strong="H4764" Saul’s|strong="H7586" daughter|strong="H1323" should have been given|strong="H5414" to David|strong="H1732", that she was given|strong="H5414" unto Adriel|strong="H5741" the Meholathite|strong="H4259" to wife|strong="H0802".
And Michal|strong="H4324" Saul’s|strong="H7586" daughter|strong="H1323" loved|strong="H0157" David|strong="H1732": and they told|strong="H5046" Saul|strong="H7586", and the thing|strong="H1697" pleased|strong="H3474" him.
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", I will give|strong="H5414" him her, that she may be a snare|strong="H4170" to him, and that the hand|strong="H3027" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" may be against him. Wherefore Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", Thou shalt this day|strong="H3117" be my son in law|strong="H2859" in the one of the twain|strong="H8147".
And Saul|strong="H7586" commanded|strong="H6680" his servants|strong="H5650", saying, Commune|strong="H1696" with David|strong="H1732" secretly|strong="H3909", and say|strong="H0559", Behold, the king|strong="H4428" hath delight|strong="H2654" in thee, and all his servants|strong="H5650" love|strong="H0157" thee: now therefore be the king’s|strong="H4428" son in law|strong="H2859".
And Saul’s|strong="H7586" servants|strong="H5650" spake|strong="H1696" those words|strong="H1697" in the ears|strong="H0241" of David|strong="H1732". And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559", Seemeth|strong="H5869" it to you a light|strong="H7043" thing to be a king’s|strong="H4428" son in law|strong="H2859", seeing that I am a poor|strong="H7326" man|strong="H0376", and lightly esteemed|strong="H7034"?
And the servants|strong="H5650" of Saul|strong="H7586" told|strong="H5046" him, saying|strong="H0559", On this manner|strong="H1697" spake|strong="H1696" David|strong="H1732".
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Thus shall ye say|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", The king|strong="H4428" desireth|strong="H2656" not any dowry|strong="H4119", but an hundred|strong="H3967" foreskins|strong="H6190" of the Philistines|strong="H6430", to be avenged|strong="H5358" of the king’s|strong="H4428" enemies|strong="H0341". But Saul|strong="H7586" thought|strong="H2803" to make David|strong="H1732" fall|strong="H5307" by the hand|strong="H3027" of the Philistines|strong="H6430".
And when his servants|strong="H5650" told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732" these words|strong="H1697", it pleased|strong="H3474" David|strong="H1732" well to be the king’s|strong="H4428" son in law|strong="H2859": and the days|strong="H3117" were not expired|strong="H4390".
Wherefore David|strong="H1732" arose|strong="H6965" and went|strong="H3212", he and his men|strong="H0582", and slew|strong="H5221" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" two hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376"; and David|strong="H1732" brought|strong="H0935" their foreskins|strong="H6190", and they gave them in full tale|strong="H4390" to the king|strong="H4428", that he might be the king’s|strong="H4428" son in law|strong="H2859". And Saul|strong="H7586" gave|strong="H5414" him Michal|strong="H4324" his daughter|strong="H1323" to wife|strong="H0802".
And Saul|strong="H7586" saw|strong="H7200" and knew|strong="H3045" that the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* was with David|strong="H1732", and that Michal|strong="H4324" Saul’s|strong="H7586" daughter|strong="H1323" loved|strong="H0157" him.
And Saul|strong="H7586" was yet the more|strong="H3254" afraid|strong="H3372" of|strong="H6440" David|strong="H1732"; and Saul|strong="H7586" became David’s|strong="H1732" enemy|strong="H0341" continually|strong="H3117".
Then the princes|strong="H8269" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" went forth|strong="H3318": and it came to pass, after|strong="H1767" they went forth|strong="H3318", that David|strong="H1732" behaved himself more wisely|strong="H7919" than all the servants|strong="H5650" of Saul|strong="H7586"; so that his name|strong="H8034" was much|strong="H3966" set by|strong="H3365".
