Samuel 17

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

Now the Philistines|strong="H6430" gathered together|strong="H0622" their armies|strong="H4264" to battle|strong="H4421", and were gathered together|strong="H0622" at Shochoh|strong="H7755", which belongeth to Judah|strong="H3063", and pitched|strong="H2583" between Shochoh|strong="H7755" and Azekah|strong="H5825", in Ephes-dammim|strong="H0658".

And Saul|strong="H7586" and the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" were gathered together|strong="H0622", and pitched|strong="H2583" by the valley|strong="H6010" of Elah|strong="H0425", and set the battle|strong="H4421" in array|strong="H6186" against|strong="H7125" the Philistines|strong="H6430".

And the Philistines|strong="H6430" stood|strong="H5975" on a mountain|strong="H2022" on the one side, and Israel|strong="H3478" stood|strong="H5975" on a mountain|strong="H2022" on the other side: and there was a valley|strong="H1516" between them.

And there went out|strong="H3318" a champion|strong="H0376" out of the camp|strong="H4264" of the Philistines|strong="H6430", named|strong="H8034" Goliath|strong="H1555", of Gath|strong="H1661", whose height|strong="H1363" was six|strong="H8337" cubits|strong="H0520" and a span|strong="H2239".

And he had an helmet|strong="H3553" of brass|strong="H5178" upon his head|strong="H7218", and he was armed|strong="H3847" with a coat|strong="H8302" of mail|strong="H7193"; and the weight|strong="H4948" of the coat|strong="H8302" was five|strong="H2568" thousand|strong="H0505" shekels|strong="H8255" of brass|strong="H5178".

And he had greaves|strong="H4697" of brass|strong="H5178" upon his legs|strong="H7272", and a target|strong="H3591" of brass|strong="H5178" between his shoulders|strong="H3802".

And the staff|strong="H6086" of his spear|strong="H2595" was like a weaver’s|strong="H0707" beam|strong="H4500"; and his spear’s|strong="H2595" head|strong="H3852" weighed six|strong="H8337" hundred|strong="H3967" shekels|strong="H8255" of iron|strong="H1270": and one bearing|strong="H5375" a shield|strong="H6793" went|strong="H1980" before|strong="H6440" him.

And he stood|strong="H5975" and cried|strong="H7121" unto the armies|strong="H4634" of Israel|strong="H3478", and said|strong="H0559" unto them, Why are ye come out|strong="H3318" to set your battle|strong="H4421" in array|strong="H6186"? am not I a Philistine|strong="H6430", and ye servants|strong="H5650" to Saul|strong="H7586"? choose|strong="H1262" you a man|strong="H0376" for you, and let him come down|strong="H3381" to me.

If he be able|strong="H3201" to fight|strong="H3898" with me, and to kill|strong="H5221" me, then will we be your servants|strong="H5650": but if I prevail|strong="H3201" against him, and kill|strong="H5221" him, then shall ye be our servants|strong="H5650", and serve|strong="H5647" us.

And the Philistine|strong="H6430" said|strong="H0559", I defy|strong="H2778" the armies|strong="H4634" of Israel|strong="H3478" this day|strong="H3117"; give|strong="H5414" me a man|strong="H0376", that we may fight|strong="H3898" together|strong="H3162".

When Saul|strong="H7586" and all Israel|strong="H3478" heard|strong="H8085" those words|strong="H1697" of the Philistine|strong="H6430", they were dismayed|strong="H2865", and greatly|strong="H3966" afraid|strong="H3372".

Now David|strong="H1732" was the son|strong="H1121" of that Ephrathite|strong="H0376" of Beth-lehem-judah|strong="H1035", whose name|strong="H8034" was Jesse|strong="H3448"; and he had eight|strong="H8083" sons|strong="H1121": and the man|strong="H0376" went|strong="H0935" among men|strong="H0582" for an old man|strong="H2204" in the days|strong="H3117" of Saul|strong="H7586".

And the three|strong="H7969" eldest|strong="H1419" sons|strong="H1121" of Jesse|strong="H3448" went|strong="H3212" and followed|strong="H0310" Saul|strong="H7586" to the battle|strong="H4421": and the names|strong="H8034" of his three|strong="H7969" sons|strong="H1121" that went|strong="H1980" to the battle|strong="H4421" were Eliab|strong="H0446" the firstborn|strong="H1060", and next|strong="H4932" unto him Abinadab|strong="H0041", and the third|strong="H7992" Shammah|strong="H8048".

And David|strong="H1732" was the youngest|strong="H6996": and the three|strong="H7969" eldest|strong="H1419" followed|strong="H1980" Saul|strong="H7586".

But David|strong="H1732" went|strong="H1980" and returned|strong="H7725" from Saul|strong="H7586" to feed|strong="H7462" his father’s|strong="H0001" sheep|strong="H6629" at Beth-lehem|strong="H1035".

And the Philistine|strong="H6430" drew near|strong="H5066" morning|strong="H7925" and evening|strong="H6150", and presented|strong="H3320" himself forty|strong="H0705" days|strong="H3117".

And Jesse|strong="H3448" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732" his son|strong="H1121", Take|strong="H3947" now for thy brethren|strong="H0251" an ephah|strong="H0374" of this|strong="H2088" parched|strong="H7039" corn, and these ten|strong="H6235" loaves|strong="H3899", and run|strong="H7323" to the camp|strong="H4264" to thy brethren|strong="H0251";

And carry|strong="H0935" these ten|strong="H6235" cheeses|strong="H2461" unto the captain|strong="H8269" of their thousand|strong="H0505", and look|strong="H6485" how thy brethren|strong="H0251" fare|strong="H7965", and take|strong="H3947" their pledge|strong="H6161".

Now Saul|strong="H7586", and they, and all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478", were in the valley|strong="H6010" of Elah|strong="H0425", fighting|strong="H3898" with the Philistines|strong="H6430".

And David|strong="H1732" rose up early|strong="H7925" in the morning|strong="H1242", and left|strong="H5203" the sheep|strong="H6629" with a keeper|strong="H8104", and took|strong="H5375", and went|strong="H3212", as Jesse|strong="H3448" had commanded|strong="H6680" him; and he came|strong="H0935" to the trench|strong="H4570", as the host|strong="H2428" was going forth|strong="H3318" to the fight|strong="H4634", and shouted|strong="H7321" for the battle|strong="H4421".

For Israel|strong="H3478" and the Philistines|strong="H6430" had put the battle in array|strong="H6186", army|strong="H4634" against|strong="H7125" army|strong="H4634".

And David|strong="H1732" left|strong="H5203" his carriage|strong="H3627" in the hand|strong="H3027" of the keeper|strong="H8104" of the carriage|strong="H3627", and ran|strong="H7323" into the army|strong="H4634", and came|strong="H0935" and saluted|strong="H7592" his brethren|strong="H0251".

And as he talked|strong="H1696" with them, behold, there came up|strong="H5927" the champion|strong="H0376", the Philistine|strong="H6430" of Gath|strong="H1661", Goliath|strong="H1555" by name|strong="H8034", out of the armies|strong="H4634" of the Philistines|strong="H6430", and spake|strong="H1696" according to the same|strong="H0428" words|strong="H1697": and David|strong="H1732" heard|strong="H8085" them.

And all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478", when they saw|strong="H7200" the man|strong="H0376", fled|strong="H5127" from him|strong="H6440", and were sore|strong="H3966" afraid|strong="H3372".

And the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" said|strong="H0559", Have ye seen|strong="H7200" this man|strong="H0376" that is come up|strong="H5927"? surely to defy|strong="H2778" Israel|strong="H3478" is he come up|strong="H5927": and it shall be, that the man|strong="H0376" who killeth|strong="H5221" him, the king|strong="H4428" will enrich|strong="H6238" him with great|strong="H1419" riches|strong="H6239", and will give|strong="H5414" him his daughter|strong="H1323", and make|strong="H6213" his father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004" free|strong="H2670" in Israel|strong="H3478".

And David|strong="H1732" spake|strong="H0559" to the men|strong="H0582" that stood|strong="H5975" by him, saying|strong="H0559", What shall be done|strong="H6213" to the man|strong="H0376" that killeth|strong="H5221" this|strong="H1975" Philistine|strong="H6430", and taketh away|strong="H5493" the reproach|strong="H2781" from Israel|strong="H3478"? for who is this uncircumcised|strong="H6189" Philistine|strong="H6430", that he should defy|strong="H2778" the armies|strong="H4634" of the living|strong="H2416" God|strong="H0430"?

And the people|strong="H5971" answered|strong="H0559" him after this manner|strong="H1697", saying|strong="H0559", So shall it be done|strong="H6213" to the man|strong="H0376" that killeth|strong="H5221" him.

And Eliab|strong="H0446" his eldest|strong="H1419" brother|strong="H0251" heard|strong="H8085" when he spake|strong="H1696" unto the men|strong="H0582"; and Eliab’s|strong="H0446" anger|strong="H0639" was kindled|strong="H2734" against David|strong="H1732", and he said|strong="H0559", Why camest thou down|strong="H3381" hither? and with whom hast thou left|strong="H5203" those|strong="H2007" few|strong="H4592" sheep|strong="H6629" in the wilderness|strong="H4057"? I know|strong="H3045" thy pride|strong="H2087", and the naughtiness|strong="H7455" of thine heart|strong="H3824"; for thou art come down|strong="H3381" that thou mightest see|strong="H7200" the battle|strong="H4421".

And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559", What have I now done|strong="H6213"? Is there not a cause|strong="H1697"?

And he turned|strong="H5437" from him|strong="H0681" toward|strong="H4136" another|strong="H0312", and spake|strong="H0559" after the same manner|strong="H1697": and the people|strong="H5971" answered|strong="H1697" him again|strong="H7725" after the former|strong="H7223" manner|strong="H1697".

And when the words|strong="H1697" were heard|strong="H8085" which David|strong="H1732" spake|strong="H1696", they rehearsed|strong="H5046" them before|strong="H6440" Saul|strong="H7586": and he sent|strong="H3947" for him.

And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" to Saul|strong="H7586", Let no man’s|strong="H0120" heart|strong="H3820" fail|strong="H5307" because of him; thy servant|strong="H5650" will go|strong="H3212" and fight|strong="H3898" with this Philistine|strong="H6430".

And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", Thou art not able|strong="H3201" to go|strong="H3212" against this Philistine|strong="H6430" to fight|strong="H3898" with him: for thou art but a youth|strong="H5288", and he a man|strong="H0376" of war|strong="H4421" from his youth|strong="H5271".

And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto Saul|strong="H7586", Thy servant|strong="H5650" kept|strong="H7462" his father’s|strong="H0001" sheep|strong="H6629", and there came|strong="H0935" a lion|strong="H0738", and a bear|strong="H1677", and took|strong="H5375" a lamb|strong="H7716" out of the flock|strong="H5739":

And I went out|strong="H3318" after|strong="H0310" him, and smote|strong="H5221" him, and delivered|strong="H5337" it out of his mouth|strong="H6310": and when he arose|strong="H6965" against me, I caught|strong="H2388" him by his beard|strong="H2206", and smote|strong="H5221" him, and slew|strong="H4191" him.

Thy servant|strong="H5650" slew|strong="H5221" both the lion|strong="H0738" and the bear|strong="H1677": and this uncircumcised|strong="H6189" Philistine|strong="H6430" shall be as one|strong="H0259" of them, seeing he hath defied|strong="H2778" the armies|strong="H4634" of the living|strong="H2416" God|strong="H0430".

David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" moreover, The \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* that delivered|strong="H5337" me out of the paw|strong="H3027" of the lion|strong="H0738", and out of the paw|strong="H3027" of the bear|strong="H1677", he will deliver|strong="H5337" me out of the hand|strong="H3027" of this Philistine|strong="H6430". And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", Go|strong="H3212", and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* be with thee.

And Saul|strong="H7586" armed|strong="H3847" David|strong="H1732" with his armour|strong="H4055", and he put|strong="H5414" an helmet|strong="H6959" of brass|strong="H5178" upon his head|strong="H7218"; also he armed|strong="H3847" him with a coat of mail|strong="H8302".

And David|strong="H1732" girded|strong="H2296" his sword|strong="H2719" upon his armour|strong="H4055", and he assayed|strong="H2974" to go|strong="H3212"; for he had not proved|strong="H5254" it. And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto Saul|strong="H7586", I cannot|strong="H3201" go|strong="H3212" with these; for I have not proved|strong="H5254" them. And David|strong="H1732" put|strong="H5493" them off him.

And he took|strong="H3947" his staff|strong="H4731" in his hand|strong="H3027", and chose|strong="H0977" him five|strong="H2568" smooth|strong="H2512" stones|strong="H0068" out of the brook|strong="H5158", and put|strong="H7760" them in a shepherd’s|strong="H7462" bag|strong="H3627" which he had, even in a scrip|strong="H3219"; and his sling|strong="H7050" was in his hand|strong="H3027": and he drew near|strong="H5066" to the Philistine|strong="H6430".

And the Philistine|strong="H6430" came|strong="H3212" on|strong="H1980" and drew near|strong="H7131" unto David|strong="H1732"; and the man|strong="H0376" that bare|strong="H5375" the shield|strong="H6793" went before|strong="H6440" him.

And when the Philistine|strong="H6430" looked about|strong="H5027", and saw|strong="H7200" David|strong="H1732", he disdained|strong="H0959" him: for he was but a youth|strong="H5288", and ruddy|strong="H0132", and of a fair|strong="H3303" countenance|strong="H4758".

And the Philistine|strong="H6430" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", Am I a dog|strong="H3611", that thou comest|strong="H0935" to me with staves|strong="H4731"? And the Philistine|strong="H6430" cursed|strong="H7043" David|strong="H1732" by his gods|strong="H0430".

And the Philistine|strong="H6430" said|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", Come|strong="H3212" to me, and I will give|strong="H5414" thy flesh|strong="H1320" unto the fowls|strong="H5775" of the air|strong="H8064", and to the beasts|strong="H0929" of the field|strong="H7704".

Then said|strong="H0559" David|strong="H1732" to the Philistine|strong="H6430", Thou comest|strong="H0935" to me with a sword|strong="H2719", and with a spear|strong="H2595", and with a shield|strong="H3591": but I come|strong="H0935" to thee in the name|strong="H8034" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* of hosts|strong="H6635", the God|strong="H0430" of the armies|strong="H4634" of Israel|strong="H3478", whom thou hast defied|strong="H2778".

This day|strong="H3117" will the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* deliver|strong="H5462" thee into mine hand|strong="H3027"; and I will smite|strong="H5221" thee, and take|strong="H5493" thine head|strong="H7218" from thee; and I will give|strong="H5414" the carcases|strong="H6297" of the host|strong="H4264" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" this day|strong="H3117" unto the fowls|strong="H5775" of the air|strong="H8064", and to the wild beasts|strong="H2416" of the earth|strong="H0776"; that all the earth|strong="H0776" may know|strong="H3045" that there is|strong="H3426" a God|strong="H0430" in Israel|strong="H3478".

And all this assembly|strong="H6951" shall know|strong="H3045" that the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* saveth|strong="H3467" not with sword|strong="H2719" and spear|strong="H2595": for the battle|strong="H4421" is the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w*, and he will give|strong="H5414" you into our hands|strong="H3027".

And it came to pass, when the Philistine|strong="H6430" arose|strong="H6965", and came|strong="H3212" and drew nigh|strong="H7126" to meet|strong="H7125" David|strong="H1732", that David|strong="H1732" hasted|strong="H4116", and ran|strong="H7323" toward the army|strong="H4634" to meet|strong="H7125" the Philistine|strong="H6430".

And David|strong="H1732" put|strong="H7971" his hand|strong="H3027" in his bag|strong="H3627", and took|strong="H3947" thence a stone|strong="H0068", and slang|strong="H7049" it, and smote|strong="H5221" the Philistine|strong="H6430" in his forehead|strong="H4696", that the stone|strong="H0068" sunk|strong="H2883" into his forehead|strong="H4696"; and he fell|strong="H5307" upon his face|strong="H6440" to the earth|strong="H0776".

So David|strong="H1732" prevailed|strong="H2388" over|strong="H4480" the Philistine|strong="H6430" with a sling|strong="H7050" and with a stone|strong="H0068", and smote|strong="H5221" the Philistine|strong="H6430", and slew|strong="H4191" him; but there was no sword|strong="H2719" in the hand|strong="H3027" of David|strong="H1732".

Therefore David|strong="H1732" ran|strong="H7323", and stood|strong="H5975" upon the Philistine|strong="H6430", and took|strong="H3947" his sword|strong="H2719", and drew|strong="H8025" it out of the sheath|strong="H8593" thereof, and slew|strong="H4191" him, and cut off|strong="H3772" his head|strong="H7218" therewith. And when the Philistines|strong="H6430" saw|strong="H7200" their champion|strong="H1368" was dead|strong="H4191", they fled|strong="H5127".

And the men|strong="H0582" of Israel|strong="H3478" and of Judah|strong="H3063" arose|strong="H6965", and shouted|strong="H7321", and pursued|strong="H7291" the Philistines|strong="H6430", until thou come|strong="H0935" to the valley|strong="H1516", and to the gates|strong="H8179" of Ekron|strong="H6138". And the wounded|strong="H2491" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" fell down|strong="H5307" by the way|strong="H1870" to Shaaraim|strong="H8189", even unto Gath|strong="H1661", and unto Ekron|strong="H6138".

And the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" returned|strong="H7725" from chasing|strong="H1814" after|strong="H0310" the Philistines|strong="H6430", and they spoiled|strong="H8155" their tents|strong="H4264".

And David|strong="H1732" took|strong="H3947" the head|strong="H7218" of the Philistine|strong="H6430", and brought|strong="H0935" it to Jerusalem|strong="H3389"; but he put|strong="H7760" his armour|strong="H3627" in his tent|strong="H0168".

And when Saul|strong="H7586" saw|strong="H7200" David|strong="H1732" go forth|strong="H3318" against|strong="H7125" the Philistine|strong="H6430", he said|strong="H0559" unto Abner|strong="H0074", the captain|strong="H8269" of the host|strong="H6635", Abner|strong="H0074", whose son|strong="H1121" is this youth|strong="H5288"?
