Now it came to pass upon a day|strong="H3117", that Jonathan|strong="H3129" the son|strong="H1121" of Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" unto the young man|strong="H5288" that bare|strong="H5375" his armour|strong="H3627", Come|strong="H3212", and let us go over|strong="H5674" to the Philistines’|strong="H6430" garrison|strong="H4673", that is on the other side|strong="H5676". But he told|strong="H5046" not his father|strong="H0001".
And Saul|strong="H7586" tarried|strong="H3427" in the uttermost|strong="H7097" part of Gibeah|strong="H1390" under a pomegranate tree|strong="H7416" which is in Migron|strong="H4051": and the people|strong="H5971" that were with him were about six|strong="H8337" hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376";
And Ahiah|strong="H0281", the son|strong="H1121" of Ahitub|strong="H0285", I-chabod’s|strong="H0350" brother|strong="H0251", the son|strong="H1121" of Phinehas|strong="H6372", the son|strong="H1121" of Eli|strong="H5941", the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* priest|strong="H3548" in Shiloh|strong="H7887", wearing|strong="H5375" an ephod|strong="H0646". And the people|strong="H5971" knew|strong="H3045" not that Jonathan|strong="H3129" was gone|strong="H1980".
And between the passages|strong="H4569", by which Jonathan|strong="H3129" sought|strong="H1245" to go over|strong="H5674" unto the Philistines’|strong="H6430" garrison|strong="H4673", there was a sharp|strong="H8127" rock|strong="H5553" on the one side|strong="H5676", and a sharp|strong="H8127" rock|strong="H5553" on the other side|strong="H5676": and the name|strong="H8034" of the one|strong="H0259" was Bozez|strong="H0949", and the name|strong="H8034" of the other|strong="H0259" Seneh|strong="H5573".
The forefront|strong="H8127" of the one|strong="H0259" was situate|strong="H4690" northward|strong="H6828" over against|strong="H4136" Michmash|strong="H4363", and the other|strong="H0259" southward|strong="H5045" over against|strong="H4136" Gibeah|strong="H1387".
And Jonathan|strong="H3083" said|strong="H0559" to the young man|strong="H5288" that bare|strong="H5375" his armour|strong="H3627", Come|strong="H3212", and let us go over|strong="H5674" unto the garrison|strong="H4673" of these uncircumcised|strong="H6189": it may be that the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* will work|strong="H6213" for us: for there is no restraint|strong="H4622" to the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* to save|strong="H3467" by many|strong="H7227" or by few|strong="H4592".
And his armourbearer|strong="H5375" said|strong="H0559" unto him, Do|strong="H6213" all that is in thine heart|strong="H3824": turn|strong="H5186" thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart|strong="H3824".
Then said|strong="H0559" Jonathan|strong="H3083", Behold, we will pass over|strong="H5674" unto these men|strong="H0582", and we will discover|strong="H1540" ourselves unto them.
If they say|strong="H0559" thus unto us, Tarry|strong="H1826" until we come|strong="H5060" to you; then we will stand still|strong="H5975" in our place, and will not go up|strong="H5927" unto them.
But if they say|strong="H0559" thus, Come up|strong="H5927" unto us; then we will go up|strong="H5927": for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath delivered|strong="H5414" them into our hand|strong="H3027": and this shall be a sign|strong="H0226" unto us.
And both|strong="H8147" of them discovered|strong="H1540" themselves unto the garrison|strong="H4673" of the Philistines|strong="H6430": and the Philistines|strong="H6430" said|strong="H0559", Behold, the Hebrews|strong="H5680" come forth|strong="H3318" out of the holes|strong="H2356" where they had hid|strong="H2244" themselves.
And the men|strong="H0582" of the garrison|strong="H4675" answered|strong="H6030" Jonathan|strong="H3129" and his armourbearer|strong="H5375", and said|strong="H0559", Come up|strong="H5927" to us, and we will shew|strong="H3045" you a thing|strong="H1697". And Jonathan|strong="H3129" said|strong="H0559" unto his armourbearer|strong="H5375", Come up|strong="H5927" after|strong="H0310" me: for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath delivered|strong="H5414" them into the hand|strong="H3027" of Israel|strong="H3478".
And Jonathan|strong="H3129" climbed up|strong="H5927" upon his hands|strong="H3027" and upon his feet|strong="H7272", and his armourbearer|strong="H5375" after|strong="H0310" him: and they fell|strong="H5307" before|strong="H6440" Jonathan|strong="H3129"; and his armourbearer|strong="H5375" slew|strong="H4191" after|strong="H0310" him.
And that first|strong="H7223" slaughter|strong="H4347", which Jonathan|strong="H3129" and his armourbearer|strong="H5375" made|strong="H5221", was about twenty|strong="H6242" men|strong="H0376", within as it were an half|strong="H2677" acre|strong="H4618" of land|strong="H7704", which a yoke|strong="H6776" of oxen might plow.
And there was trembling|strong="H2731" in the host|strong="H4264", in the field|strong="H7704", and among all the people|strong="H5971": the garrison|strong="H4673", and the spoilers|strong="H7843", they also trembled|strong="H2729", and the earth|strong="H0776" quaked|strong="H7264": so it was a very great|strong="H0430" trembling|strong="H2731".
And the watchmen|strong="H6822" of Saul|strong="H7586" in Gibeah|strong="H1390" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" looked|strong="H7200"; and, behold, the multitude|strong="H1995" melted away|strong="H4127", and they went|strong="H3212" on beating down|strong="H1986" one another.
Then said|strong="H0559" Saul|strong="H7586" unto the people|strong="H5971" that were with him, Number|strong="H6485" now, and see|strong="H7200" who is gone|strong="H1980" from us. And when they had numbered|strong="H6485", behold, Jonathan|strong="H3129" and his armourbearer|strong="H5375" were not there.
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" unto Ahiah|strong="H0281", Bring hither|strong="H5066" the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430". For the ark|strong="H0727" of God|strong="H0430" was at that time|strong="H3117" with the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478".
And it came to pass, while Saul|strong="H7586" talked|strong="H1696" unto the priest|strong="H3548", that the noise|strong="H1995" that was in the host|strong="H4264" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" went|strong="H3212" on|strong="H1980" and increased|strong="H7227": and Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" unto the priest|strong="H3548", Withdraw|strong="H0622" thine hand|strong="H3027".
And Saul|strong="H7586" and all the people|strong="H5971" that were with him assembled|strong="H2199" themselves, and they came|strong="H0935" to the battle|strong="H4421": and, behold, every man’s|strong="H0376" sword|strong="H2719" was against his fellow|strong="H7453", and there was a very|strong="H3966" great|strong="H1419" discomfiture|strong="H4103".
Moreover the Hebrews|strong="H5680" that were with the Philistines|strong="H6430" before|strong="H0865" that time|strong="H8032", which went up|strong="H5927" with them into the camp|strong="H4264" from the country round about|strong="H5439", even they also turned to be with the Israelites|strong="H3478" that were with Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3129".
Likewise all the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" which had hid|strong="H2244" themselves in mount|strong="H2022" Ephraim|strong="H0669", when they heard|strong="H8085" that the Philistines|strong="H6430" fled|strong="H5127", even they also followed hard|strong="H1692" after|strong="H0310" them in the battle|strong="H4421".
So the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* saved|strong="H3467" Israel|strong="H3478" that day|strong="H3117": and the battle|strong="H4421" passed over|strong="H5674" unto Beth-aven|strong="H1007".
And the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" were distressed|strong="H5065" that day|strong="H3117": for Saul|strong="H7586" had adjured|strong="H0422" the people|strong="H5971", saying|strong="H0559", Cursed|strong="H0779" be the man|strong="H0376" that eateth|strong="H0398" any food|strong="H3899" until evening|strong="H6153", that I may be avenged|strong="H5358" on mine enemies|strong="H0341". So none of the people|strong="H5971" tasted|strong="H2938" any food|strong="H3899".
And all they of the land|strong="H0776" came|strong="H0935" to a wood|strong="H3293"; and there was honey|strong="H1706" upon|strong="H6440" the ground|strong="H7704".
And when the people|strong="H5971" were come|strong="H0935" into the wood|strong="H3293", behold, the honey|strong="H1706" dropped|strong="H1982"; but no man put|strong="H5381" his hand|strong="H3027" to his mouth|strong="H6310": for the people|strong="H5971" feared|strong="H3372" the oath|strong="H7621".
But Jonathan|strong="H3129" heard|strong="H8085" not when his father|strong="H0001" charged|strong="H7650" the people|strong="H5971" with the oath|strong="H7650": wherefore he put forth|strong="H7971" the end|strong="H7097" of the rod|strong="H4294" that was in his hand|strong="H3027", and dipped|strong="H2881" it in an honeycomb|strong="H3295", and put|strong="H7725" his hand|strong="H3027" to his mouth|strong="H6310"; and his eyes|strong="H5869" were enlightened|strong="H0215".
Then answered|strong="H6030" one|strong="H0376" of the people|strong="H5971", and said|strong="H0559", Thy father|strong="H0001" straitly|strong="H7650" charged|strong="H7650" the people|strong="H5971" with an oath|strong="H7650", saying|strong="H0559", Cursed|strong="H0779" be the man|strong="H0376" that eateth|strong="H0398" any food|strong="H3899" this day|strong="H3117". And the people|strong="H5971" were faint|strong="H5774".
Then said|strong="H0559" Jonathan|strong="H3129", My father|strong="H0001" hath troubled|strong="H5916" the land|strong="H0776": see|strong="H7200", I pray you, how mine eyes|strong="H5869" have been enlightened|strong="H0215", because I tasted|strong="H2938" a little|strong="H4592" of this honey|strong="H1706".
How much more|strong="H0637", if haply|strong="H3863" the people|strong="H5971" had eaten|strong="H0398" freely|strong="H0398" to day|strong="H3117" of the spoil|strong="H7998" of their enemies|strong="H0341" which they found|strong="H4672"? for had there not been now a much greater|strong="H7235" slaughter|strong="H4347" among the Philistines|strong="H6430"?
And they smote|strong="H5221" the Philistines|strong="H6430" that day|strong="H3117" from Michmash|strong="H4363" to Aijalon|strong="H0357": and the people|strong="H5971" were very|strong="H3966" faint|strong="H5774".
And the people|strong="H5971" flew|strong="H5860" upon the spoil|strong="H7998", and took|strong="H3947" sheep|strong="H6629", and oxen|strong="H1241", and calves|strong="H1121", and slew|strong="H7819" them on the ground|strong="H0776": and the people|strong="H5971" did eat|strong="H0398" them with the blood|strong="H1818".
Then they told|strong="H5046" Saul|strong="H7586", saying|strong="H0559", Behold, the people|strong="H5971" sin|strong="H2398" against the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, in that they eat|strong="H0398" with the blood|strong="H1818". And he said|strong="H0559", Ye have transgressed|strong="H0898": roll|strong="H1556" a great|strong="H1419" stone|strong="H0068" unto me this day|strong="H3117".
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Disperse|strong="H6327" yourselves among the people|strong="H5971", and say|strong="H0559" unto them, Bring me hither|strong="H5066" every man|strong="H0376" his ox|strong="H7794", and every man|strong="H0376" his sheep|strong="H7716", and slay|strong="H7819" them here, and eat|strong="H0398"; and sin|strong="H2398" not against the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* in eating|strong="H0398" with the blood|strong="H1818". And all the people|strong="H5971" brought|strong="H5066" every man|strong="H0376" his ox|strong="H7794" with him|strong="H3027" that night|strong="H3915", and slew|strong="H7819" them there.
And Saul|strong="H7586" built|strong="H1129" an altar|strong="H4196" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: the same was the first|strong="H2490" altar|strong="H4196" that he built|strong="H1129" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Let us go down|strong="H3381" after|strong="H0310" the Philistines|strong="H6430" by night|strong="H3915", and spoil|strong="H0962" them until the morning|strong="H1242" light|strong="H0216", and let us not leave|strong="H7604" a man|strong="H0376" of them. And they said|strong="H0559", Do|strong="H6213" whatsoever seemeth|strong="H5869" good|strong="H2896" unto thee. Then said|strong="H0559" the priest|strong="H3548", Let us draw near|strong="H7126" hither|strong="H1988" unto God|strong="H0430".
And Saul|strong="H7586" asked|strong="H7592" counsel of God|strong="H0430", Shall I go down|strong="H3381" after|strong="H0310" the Philistines|strong="H6430"? wilt thou deliver|strong="H5414" them into the hand|strong="H3027" of Israel|strong="H3478"? But he answered|strong="H6030" him not that day|strong="H3117".
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Draw ye near|strong="H5066" hither|strong="H1988", all the chief|strong="H6438" of the people|strong="H5971": and know|strong="H3045" and see|strong="H7200" wherein|strong="H4100" this sin|strong="H2403" hath been this day|strong="H3117".
For, as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416", which saveth|strong="H3467" Israel|strong="H3478", though it be|strong="H3426" in Jonathan|strong="H3129" my son|strong="H1121", he shall surely|strong="H4191" die|strong="H4191". But there was not a man among all the people|strong="H5971" that answered|strong="H6030" him.
Then said|strong="H0559" he unto all Israel|strong="H3478", Be ye on one|strong="H0259" side|strong="H5676", and I and Jonathan|strong="H3129" my son|strong="H1121" will be on the other|strong="H0259" side|strong="H5676". And the people|strong="H5971" said|strong="H0559" unto Saul|strong="H7586", Do|strong="H6213" what seemeth|strong="H5869" good|strong="H2896" unto thee.
Therefore Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", Give|strong="H3051" a perfect|strong="H8549" lot. And Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3129" were taken|strong="H3920": but the people|strong="H5971" escaped|strong="H3318".
And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Cast|strong="H5307" lots between me and Jonathan|strong="H3129" my son|strong="H1121". And Jonathan|strong="H3129" was taken|strong="H3920".
Then Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" to Jonathan|strong="H3129", Tell|strong="H5046" me what thou hast done|strong="H6213". And Jonathan|strong="H3129" told|strong="H5046" him, and said|strong="H0559", I did but|strong="H2938" taste|strong="H2938" a little|strong="H4592" honey|strong="H1706" with the end|strong="H7097" of the rod|strong="H4294" that was in mine hand|strong="H3027", and, lo|strong="H2009", I must die|strong="H4191".
And Saul|strong="H7586" answered|strong="H0559", God|strong="H0430" do so|strong="H6213" and more also|strong="H3254": for thou shalt surely|strong="H4191" die|strong="H4191", Jonathan|strong="H3129".
And the people|strong="H5971" said|strong="H0559" unto Saul|strong="H7586", Shall Jonathan|strong="H3129" die|strong="H4191", who hath wrought|strong="H6213" this great|strong="H1419" salvation|strong="H3444" in Israel|strong="H3478"? God forbid|strong="H2486": as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416", there shall not one hair|strong="H8185" of his head|strong="H7218" fall|strong="H5307" to the ground|strong="H0776"; for he hath wrought|strong="H6213" with God|strong="H0430" this day|strong="H3117". So the people|strong="H5971" rescued|strong="H6299" Jonathan|strong="H3129", that he died|strong="H4191" not.
Then Saul|strong="H7586" went up|strong="H5927" from following|strong="H0310" the Philistines|strong="H6430": and the Philistines|strong="H6430" went|strong="H1980" to their own place|strong="H4725".
So Saul|strong="H7586" took|strong="H3920" the kingdom|strong="H4410" over Israel|strong="H3478", and fought|strong="H3898" against all his enemies|strong="H0341" on every side|strong="H5439", against Moab|strong="H4124", and against the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983", and against Edom|strong="H0123", and against the kings|strong="H4428" of Zobah|strong="H6678", and against the Philistines|strong="H6430": and whithersoever he turned|strong="H6437" himself, he vexed|strong="H7561" them.
And he gathered|strong="H6213" an host|strong="H2428", and smote|strong="H5221" the Amalekites|strong="H6002", and delivered|strong="H5337" Israel|strong="H3478" out of the hands|strong="H3027" of them that spoiled|strong="H8154" them.
Now the sons|strong="H1121" of Saul|strong="H7586" were Jonathan|strong="H3129", and Ishui|strong="H3440", and Melchi-shua|strong="H4444": and the names|strong="H8034" of his two|strong="H8147" daughters|strong="H1323" were these; the name|strong="H8034" of the firstborn|strong="H1067" Merab|strong="H4764", and the name|strong="H8034" of the younger|strong="H6996" Michal|strong="H4324":
And the name|strong="H8034" of Saul’s|strong="H7586" wife|strong="H0802" was Ahinoam|strong="H0293", the daughter|strong="H1323" of Ahimaaz|strong="H0290": and the name|strong="H8034" of the captain|strong="H8269" of his host|strong="H6635" was Abner|strong="H0074", the son|strong="H1121" of Ner|strong="H5369", Saul’s|strong="H7586" uncle|strong="H1730".
And Kish|strong="H7027" was the father|strong="H0001" of Saul|strong="H7586"; and Ner|strong="H5369" the father|strong="H0001" of Abner|strong="H0074" was the son|strong="H1121" of Abiel|strong="H0022".
And there was sore|strong="H2389" war|strong="H4421" against the Philistines|strong="H6430" all the days|strong="H3117" of Saul|strong="H7586": and when Saul|strong="H7586" saw|strong="H7200" any strong|strong="H1368" man|strong="H0376", or any valiant|strong="H2428" man|strong="H1121", he took|strong="H0622" him unto him.
