1 Saul|strong="H7586" reigned|strong="H4427" one year|strong="H1121"; and when he had reigned|strong="H4427" two|strong="H8147" years|strong="H8141" over Israel|strong="H3478",
2 Saul|strong="H7586" chose|strong="H0977" him three|strong="H7969" thousand|strong="H0505" men of Israel|strong="H3478"; whereof two thousand|strong="H0505" were with Saul|strong="H7586" in Michmash|strong="H4363" and in mount|strong="H2022" Beth-el|strong="H1008", and a thousand|strong="H0505" were with Jonathan|strong="H3129" in Gibeah|strong="H1390" of Benjamin|strong="H1144": and the rest|strong="H3499" of the people|strong="H5971" he sent|strong="H7971" every man|strong="H0376" to his tent|strong="H0168".
3 And Jonathan|strong="H3129" smote|strong="H5221" the garrison|strong="H5333" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" that was in Geba|strong="H1387", and the Philistines|strong="H6430" heard|strong="H8085" of it. And Saul|strong="H7586" blew|strong="H8628" the trumpet|strong="H7782" throughout all the land|strong="H0776", saying|strong="H0559", Let the Hebrews|strong="H5680" hear|strong="H8085".
4 And all Israel|strong="H3478" heard|strong="H8085" say|strong="H0559" that Saul|strong="H7586" had smitten|strong="H5221" a garrison|strong="H5333" of the Philistines|strong="H6430", and that Israel|strong="H3478" also was had in abomination|strong="H0887" with the Philistines|strong="H6430". And the people|strong="H5971" were called together|strong="H6817" after|strong="H0310" Saul|strong="H7586" to Gilgal|strong="H1537".
5 And the Philistines|strong="H6430" gathered themselves together|strong="H0622" to fight|strong="H3898" with Israel|strong="H3478", thirty|strong="H7970" thousand|strong="H0505" chariots|strong="H7393", and six|strong="H8337" thousand|strong="H0505" horsemen|strong="H6571", and people|strong="H5971" as the sand|strong="H2344" which is on the sea|strong="H3220" shore|strong="H8193" in multitude|strong="H7230": and they came up|strong="H5927", and pitched|strong="H2583" in Michmash|strong="H4363", eastward|strong="H6926" from Beth-aven|strong="H1007".
6 When the men|strong="H0376" of Israel|strong="H3478" saw|strong="H7200" that they were in a strait|strong="H6887", (for the people|strong="H5971" were distressed|strong="H5065",) then the people|strong="H5971" did hide|strong="H2244" themselves in caves|strong="H4631", and in thickets|strong="H2337", and in rocks|strong="H5553", and in high places|strong="H6877", and in pits|strong="H0953".
7 And some of the Hebrews|strong="H5680" went over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383" to the land|strong="H0776" of Gad|strong="H1410" and Gilead|strong="H1568". As for Saul|strong="H7586", he was yet in Gilgal|strong="H1537", and all the people|strong="H5971" followed|strong="H0310" him trembling|strong="H2729".
8 And he tarried|strong="H3176" seven|strong="H7651" days|strong="H3117", according to the set time|strong="H4150" that Samuel|strong="H8050" had appointed: but Samuel|strong="H8050" came|strong="H0935" not to Gilgal|strong="H1537"; and the people|strong="H5971" were scattered|strong="H6327" from him.
9 And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Bring hither|strong="H5066" a burnt offering|strong="H5930" to me, and peace offerings|strong="H8002". And he offered|strong="H5927" the burnt offering|strong="H5930".
10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end|strong="H3615" of offering|strong="H5927" the burnt offering|strong="H5930", behold, Samuel|strong="H8050" came|strong="H0935"; and Saul|strong="H7586" went out|strong="H3318" to meet|strong="H7125" him, that he might salute|strong="H1288" him.
11 And Samuel|strong="H8050" said|strong="H0559", What hast thou done|strong="H6213"? And Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559", Because I saw|strong="H7200" that the people|strong="H5971" were scattered|strong="H5310" from me, and that thou camest|strong="H0935" not within the days|strong="H3117" appointed|strong="H4150", and that the Philistines|strong="H6430" gathered themselves together|strong="H0622" at Michmash|strong="H4363";
12 Therefore said|strong="H0559" I, The Philistines|strong="H6430" will come down|strong="H3381" now upon me to Gilgal|strong="H1537", and I have not made supplication|strong="H2470" unto|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: I forced|strong="H0662" myself therefore, and offered|strong="H5927" a burnt offering|strong="H5930".
13 And Samuel|strong="H8050" said|strong="H0559" to Saul|strong="H7586", Thou hast done foolishly|strong="H5528": thou hast not kept|strong="H8104" the commandment|strong="H4687" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* thy God|strong="H0430", which he commanded|strong="H6680" thee: for now would the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* have established|strong="H3559" thy kingdom|strong="H4467" upon Israel|strong="H3478" for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769".
14 But now thy kingdom|strong="H4467" shall not continue|strong="H6965": the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath sought|strong="H1245" him a man|strong="H0376" after his own heart|strong="H3824", and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath commanded|strong="H6680" him to be captain|strong="H5057" over his people|strong="H5971", because thou hast not kept|strong="H8104" that which the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* commanded|strong="H6680" thee.
15 And Samuel|strong="H8050" arose|strong="H6965", and gat him up|strong="H5927" from Gilgal|strong="H1537" unto Gibeah|strong="H1390" of Benjamin|strong="H1144". And Saul|strong="H7586" numbered|strong="H6485" the people|strong="H5971" that were present|strong="H4672" with him, about six|strong="H8337" hundred|strong="H3967" men|strong="H0376".
16 And Saul|strong="H7586", and Jonathan|strong="H3129" his son|strong="H1121", and the people|strong="H5971" that were present|strong="H4672" with them, abode|strong="H3427" in Gibeah|strong="H1387" of Benjamin|strong="H1144": but the Philistines|strong="H6430" encamped|strong="H2583" in Michmash|strong="H4363".
17 And the spoilers|strong="H7843" came out|strong="H3318" of the camp|strong="H4264" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" in three|strong="H7969" companies|strong="H7218": one|strong="H0259" company|strong="H7218" turned|strong="H6437" unto the way|strong="H1870" that leadeth to Ophrah|strong="H6084", unto the land|strong="H0776" of Shual|strong="H7777":
18 And another|strong="H0259" company|strong="H7218" turned|strong="H6437" the way|strong="H1870" to Beth-horon|strong="H1032": and another|strong="H0259" company|strong="H7218" turned|strong="H6437" to the way|strong="H1870" of the border|strong="H1366" that looketh|strong="H8259" to the valley|strong="H1516" of Zeboim|strong="H6650" toward the wilderness|strong="H4057".
19 Now there was no smith|strong="H2796" found|strong="H4672" throughout all the land|strong="H0776" of Israel|strong="H3478": for the Philistines|strong="H6430" said|strong="H0559", Lest the Hebrews|strong="H5680" make|strong="H6213" them swords|strong="H2719" or spears|strong="H2595":
20 But all the Israelites|strong="H3478" went down|strong="H3381" to the Philistines|strong="H6430", to sharpen|strong="H3913" every man|strong="H0376" his share|strong="H4282", and his coulter|strong="H0855", and his axe|strong="H7134", and his mattock|strong="H4281".
21 Yet they had a file|strong="H6477" for the mattocks|strong="H4281", and for the coulters|strong="H0855", and for the forks|strong="H7969", and for the axes|strong="H7134", and to sharpen|strong="H5324" the goads|strong="H1861".
22 So it came to pass in the day|strong="H3117" of battle|strong="H4421", that there was neither sword|strong="H2719" nor spear|strong="H2595" found|strong="H4672" in the hand|strong="H3027" of any of the people|strong="H5971" that were with Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3129": but with Saul|strong="H7586" and with Jonathan|strong="H3129" his son|strong="H1121" was there found|strong="H4672".
23 And the garrison|strong="H4673" of the Philistines|strong="H6430" went out|strong="H3318" to the passage|strong="H4569" of Michmash|strong="H4363".
