Now it came to pass after this|strong="H0310", that Nahash|strong="H5176" the king|strong="H4428" of the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" died|strong="H4191", and his son|strong="H1121" reigned|strong="H4427" in his stead.
And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559", I will shew|strong="H6213" kindness|strong="H2617" unto Hanun|strong="H2586" the son|strong="H1121" of Nahash|strong="H5176", because his father|strong="H0001" shewed|strong="H6213" kindness|strong="H2617" to me. And David|strong="H1732" sent|strong="H7971" messengers|strong="H4397" to comfort|strong="H5162" him concerning his father|strong="H0001". So the servants|strong="H5650" of David|strong="H1732" came|strong="H0935" into the land|strong="H0776" of the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" to Hanun|strong="H2586", to comfort|strong="H5162" him.
But the princes|strong="H8269" of the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" said|strong="H0559" to Hanun|strong="H2586", Thinkest|strong="H5869" thou that David|strong="H1732" doth honour|strong="H3513" thy father|strong="H0001", that he hath sent|strong="H7971" comforters|strong="H5162" unto thee? are not his servants|strong="H5650" come|strong="H0935" unto thee for to search|strong="H2713", and to overthrow|strong="H2015", and to spy out|strong="H7270" the land|strong="H0776"?
Wherefore Hanun|strong="H2586" took|strong="H3947" David’s|strong="H1732" servants|strong="H5650", and shaved|strong="H1548" them, and cut off|strong="H3772" their garments|strong="H4063" in the midst|strong="H2677" hard by their buttocks|strong="H4667", and sent them away|strong="H7971".
Then there went|strong="H3212" certain, and told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732" how the men|strong="H0582" were served. And he sent|strong="H7971" to meet|strong="H7125" them: for the men|strong="H0582" were greatly|strong="H3966" ashamed|strong="H3637". And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559", Tarry|strong="H3427" at Jericho|strong="H3405" until your beards|strong="H2206" be grown|strong="H6779", and then return|strong="H7725".
And when the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" saw|strong="H7200" that they had made themselves odious|strong="H0887" to David|strong="H1732", Hanun|strong="H2586" and the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" sent|strong="H7971" a thousand|strong="H0505" talents|strong="H3603" of silver|strong="H3701" to hire|strong="H7936" them chariots|strong="H7393" and horsemen|strong="H6571" out of Mesopotamia|strong="H0763", and out of Syria-maachah|strong="H0758", and out of Zobah|strong="H6678".
So they hired|strong="H7936" thirty|strong="H7970" and two|strong="H8147" thousand|strong="H0505" chariots|strong="H7393", and the king|strong="H4428" of Maachah|strong="H4601" and his people|strong="H5971"; who came|strong="H0935" and pitched|strong="H2583" before|strong="H6440" Medeba|strong="H4311". And the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" gathered themselves together|strong="H0622" from their cities|strong="H5892", and came|strong="H0935" to battle|strong="H4421".
And when David|strong="H1732" heard|strong="H8085" of it, he sent|strong="H7971" Joab|strong="H3097", and all the host|strong="H6635" of the mighty men|strong="H1368".
And the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" came out|strong="H3318", and put the battle|strong="H4421" in array|strong="H6186" before the gate|strong="H6607" of the city|strong="H5892": and the kings|strong="H4428" that were come|strong="H0935" were by themselves in the field|strong="H7704".
Now when Joab|strong="H3097" saw|strong="H7200" that the battle|strong="H4421" was set against him before|strong="H6440" and behind|strong="H0268", he chose out|strong="H0977" of all the choice|strong="H0977" of Israel|strong="H3478", and put them in array|strong="H6186" against|strong="H7125" the Syrians|strong="H0758".
And the rest|strong="H3499" of the people|strong="H5971" he delivered|strong="H5414" unto the hand|strong="H3027" of Abishai|strong="H0052" his brother|strong="H0251", and they set themselves in array|strong="H6186" against|strong="H7125" the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983".
And he said|strong="H0559", If the Syrians|strong="H0758" be too strong|strong="H2388" for me, then thou shalt help|strong="H8668" me: but if the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" be too strong|strong="H2388" for thee, then I will help|strong="H3467" thee.
Be of good courage|strong="H2388", and let us behave ourselves valiantly|strong="H2388" for our people|strong="H5971", and for the cities|strong="H5892" of our God|strong="H0430": and let the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* do|strong="H6213" that which is good|strong="H2896" in his sight|strong="H5869".
So Joab|strong="H3097" and the people|strong="H5971" that were with him drew nigh|strong="H5066" before|strong="H6440" the Syrians|strong="H0758" unto the battle|strong="H4421"; and they fled|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" him.
And when the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" saw|strong="H7200" that the Syrians|strong="H0758" were fled|strong="H5127", they likewise fled|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" Abishai|strong="H0052" his brother|strong="H0251", and entered|strong="H0935" into the city|strong="H5892". Then Joab|strong="H3097" came|strong="H0935" to Jerusalem|strong="H3389".
And when the Syrians|strong="H0758" saw|strong="H7200" that they were put to the worse|strong="H5062" before|strong="H6440" Israel|strong="H3478", they sent|strong="H7971" messengers|strong="H4397", and drew forth|strong="H3318" the Syrians|strong="H0758" that were beyond|strong="H5676" the river|strong="H5104": and Shophach|strong="H7780" the captain|strong="H8269" of the host|strong="H6635" of Hadarezer|strong="H1928" went before|strong="H6440" them.
And it was told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732"; and he gathered|strong="H0622" all Israel|strong="H3478", and passed over|strong="H5674" Jordan|strong="H3383", and came|strong="H0935" upon them, and set the battle in array|strong="H6186" against them. So when David|strong="H1732" had put the battle|strong="H4421" in array|strong="H6186" against|strong="H7125" the Syrians|strong="H0758", they fought|strong="H3898" with him.
But the Syrians|strong="H0758" fled|strong="H5127" before|strong="H6440" Israel|strong="H3478"; and David|strong="H1732" slew|strong="H2026" of the Syrians|strong="H0758" seven|strong="H7651" thousand|strong="H0505" men which fought in chariots|strong="H7393", and forty|strong="H0705" thousand|strong="H0505" footmen|strong="H0376", and killed|strong="H4191" Shophach|strong="H7780" the captain|strong="H8269" of the host|strong="H6635".
And when the servants|strong="H5650" of Hadarezer|strong="H1928" saw|strong="H7200" that they were put to the worse|strong="H5062" before|strong="H6440" Israel|strong="H3478", they made peace|strong="H7999" with David|strong="H1732", and became his servants|strong="H5647": neither would|strong="H0014" the Syrians|strong="H0758" help|strong="H3467" the children|strong="H1121" of Ammon|strong="H5983" any more.
