1 My brothers, not many of you should be teachers. You know that we who teach will be punished more than other people.
1 Meus irmãos, não vos torneis, muitos de vós, mestres, sabendo que havemos de receber maior juízo.
2 We all do many wrong things. Any man who never says anything wrong is right in every way. He is able to make his whole body do what is right.
2 Porque todos tropeçamos em muitas coisas. Se alguém não tropeça no falar, é perfeito varão, capaz de refrear também todo o corpo.
3 We put a piece of iron in the mouths of horses so they will obey us. Then we can make their whole bodies go where we want them to go.
3 Ora, se pomos freio na boca dos cavalos, para nos obedecerem, também lhes dirigimos o corpo inteiro.
4 Look at the big boats also. They are very big. The strong winds push them along. But a man uses a small piece of wood and makes the boat go where he wants it to go.
4 Observai, igualmente, os navios que, sendo tão grandes e batidos de rijos ventos, por um pequeníssimo leme são dirigidos para onde queira o impulso do timoneiro.
5 A persons tongue is like that. It is a small part of the body but it talks about big things. A very small fire can burn a big pile of wood!
5 Assim, também a língua, pequeno órgão, se gaba de grandes coisas. Vede como uma fagulha põe em brasas tão grande selva!
6 The tongue is like a fire. It is like a whole world of trouble. It is a part of our body. And it makes our whole body bad. It burns up our whole life. And the fire that makes the tongue burn comes from hell.
6 Ora, a língua é fogo; é mundo de iniquidade; a língua está situada entre os membros de nosso corpo, e contamina o corpo inteiro, e não só põe em chamas toda a carreira da existência humana, como também é posta ela mesma em chamas pelo inferno.
7 People have been able to tame all kinds of animals, birds, snakes, and fish.
7 Pois toda espécie de feras, de aves, de répteis e de seres marinhos se doma e tem sido domada pelo gênero humano;
8 But no one can tame the tongue. It is a bad thing that will not be ruled. It is full of poison that can kill.
8 a língua, porém, nenhum dos homens é capaz de domar; é mal incontido, carregado de veneno mortífero.
9 We praise our Lord and Father with our tongues. And we speak wrong words about people with our tongues, even though they were made like God.
9 Com ela, bendizemos ao Senhor e Pai; também, com ela, amaldiçoamos os homens, feitos à semelhança de Deus.
10 Praising and wrong words come out of the same mouth! My brothers, this should not be so.
10 De uma só boca procede bênção e maldição. Meus irmãos, não é conveniente que estas coisas sejam assim.
11 Do good water and bad water both come from the same place?
11 Acaso, pode a fonte jorrar do mesmo lugar o que é doce e o que é amargoso?
12 My brothers, do olives come from a fig tree? Or do figs come from a vine? No, they do not! Salt water and fresh water do not both come from the same place.
12 Acaso, meus irmãos, pode a figueira produzir azeitonas ou a videira, figos? Tampouco fonte de água salgada pode dar água doce.
13 Who among you is wise and knows about things? He should show what he knows by his good life. He will not be proud because he is wise.
13 Quem entre vós é sábio e inteligente? Mostre em mansidão de sabedoria, mediante condigno proceder, as suas obras.
14 Are you a person who is very jealous? In your hearts you want to be better than others? Then stop being proud of yourself. Do not say what is not true.
14 Se, pelo contrário, tendes em vosso coração inveja amargurada e sentimento faccioso, nem vos glorieis disso, nem mintais contra a verdade.
15 God did not give you wisdom like that. But it comes from this world. It comes from people. It comes from bad spirits.
15 Esta não é a sabedoria que desce lá do alto; antes, é terrena, animal e demoníaca.
16 If people are jealous of others, their lives are not right. They do every kind of wrong thing to get what they want. They confuse and upset people.
16 Pois, onde há inveja e sentimento faccioso, aí há confusão e toda espécie de coisas ruins.
17 First of all, when God makes people wise, they are holy. They do not fight. They are gentle. They listen to what other people say. They are very kind and do many good things. They do not quarrel. They do not say what is not true.
17 A sabedoria, porém, lá do alto é, primeiramente, pura; depois, pacífica, indulgente, tratável, plena de misericórdia e de bons frutos, imparcial, sem fingimento.
18 People who do not quarrel have peace. When there is peace, there is a good life.
18 Ora, é em paz que se semeia o fruto da justiça, para os que promovem a paz.
