¹ So stop all the wrong things you do. Stop all the ways you cheat people. Stop fooling people. Stop being jealous. Stop saying wrong things about people.

¹ Deixando, pois, toda a malícia, todo o engano, e fingimentos, e invejas, e toda a maledicência,

² Babies who have just been born want milk very much. In the same way, you should want Gods word. That is like good milk. It will make you grow up so that you will then be fully saved.

² desejai, como meninos recém-nascidos, o leite racional, sem dolo, para que por ele cresçais para a salvação,

³ You should want Gods word if you have already tasted and know that the Lord is good.

³ se é que já provastes que o Senhor é benigno.

⁴ Come to the Lord Jesus. He is like a living stone. People did not want to use it. But God chose it. It was worth very much to him.

⁴ e, chegando-vos para ele, pedra viva, rejeitada, na verdade, pelos homens, mas, para com Deus eleita e preciosa,

⁵ You also are like living stones. You are being built into a temple, a holy place for God. You are to be holy priests there. You are to give sacrifices to God from your heart. God will accept them because of Jesus Christ.

⁵ sois vós também quais pedras vivas, edificados como casa espiritual para serdes um sacerdócio santo, a fim de oferecerdes sacrifícios espirituais, aceitáveis a Deus por Jesus Cristo.

⁶ The holy writings say, Listen, I am placing a stone in Zion. It is the main stone of the house. I have chosen it and it is worth very much. Anyone who believes in him will not be ashamed.

⁶ Por isso é que se acha na Escritura: Eis que ponho em Sião a principal pedra angular, eleita e preciosa, E aquele que nele crê, não será envergonhado.

⁷ He is worth very much to you who believe in him. But some people do not believe in him. To them he is, the stone that the men who were building would not use. But now it is the chief stone at the corner.

⁷ Para vós, portanto, que credes é a honra; mas para aqueles que descrêem, A pedra que os edificadores rejeitaram, Esta foi posta como a pedra angular

⁸ And to them he is also, a stone on which people will hit their feet, and a rock that will make them fall down. They hit their feet on it, because they do not obey the word. It was planned that this would happen to them! But you are a chosen people. You are priests to your king. You are a holy nation. You are Gods very own people. All this is so that you will tell how good he is. He called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

⁸ e Como uma pedra de tropeço e uma rocha de escândalo; porque tropeçam na palavra, sendo desobedientes, para o que também foram postos.

⁹ At one time you were not Gods people. But now you are Gods people. At one time you did not know Gods kindness. Now you do.

⁹ Mas vós sois a geração eleita, o sacerdócio real, a nação santa, o povo todo seu para que proclameis as grandezas daquele que vos chamou das trevas para a sua maravilhosa luz,

¹⁰ Dear brothers, you are people who do not belong to this world. You are like visitors who are on a journey. I beg you, do not do the things your body wants to do. Those things fight against your soul.

¹⁰ vós que em outro tempo éreis não povo, mas agora sois povo de Deus, vós que não havíeis alcançado misericórdia, mas agora a tendes alcançado.

¹¹ Live good lives among the people who do not believe. They may talk about you as if you do wrong things. But when they see the good things you do, they will praise God on the day he comes to help you.

¹¹ Amados, rogo-vos como peregrinos e forasteiros, que vos abstenhais dos desejos carnais, que combatem contra a alma,

¹² Obey every officer of the government to please the Lord. Obey the king because he is over all.

¹² tendo o vosso procedimento bom entre os gentios, a fim de que, naquilo em que murmuram de vós como de malfeitores, considerando-vos pelas vossas obras, glorifiquem a Deus no dia da visitação.

¹³ Obey the rulers because they are sent by him. They are sent to punish those who do wrong things and to praise those who do good things.

¹³ Sujeitai-vos a toda autoridade humana por amor do Senhor, quer ao rei, como soberano,

¹⁴ That is what God wants you to do. He wants you to do good things. By doing good things, you will stop foolish people from saying wrong things about you. They say wrong things about you because they do not know you.

¹⁴ quer seja ao rei como supremo, quer seja aos governadores, como enviados por ele para castigo dos malfeitores e para louvor dos que fazem o bem.

¹⁵ You are free people. But do not think, I am free so I can do wrong things. You are Gods servants.

¹⁵ Porque assim é a vontade de Deus, que, fazendo o bem, façais emudecer a ignorância dos homens imprudentes,

¹⁶ Respect all men. Love your Christian brothers. Fear God. Respect the king.

¹⁶ como livres, e não tendo a vossa liberdade para capa da malícia, mas como servos de Deus.

¹⁷ Servants, respect and obey your masters in all things. Obey not only those who are good to you. But also obey those who are hard on you.

¹⁷ Honrai a todos, amai a irmandade, temei a Deus, respeitai ao rei.

¹⁸ Maybe a person is punished when he has done nothing wrong. If he takes these troubles to please God, he does a very good thing.

¹⁸ Servos, sede sujeitos com todo o temor a vossos senhores, não somente aos bons e moderados, mas também aos perversos.

¹⁹ What praise will you have if you take a beating when you have done something wrong? But when you do right and are punished, if you take it quietly, God is pleased.

¹⁹ Pois isto é agradável, se alguém, por ser cônscio de Deus, suporta tristezas, padecendo injustamente.

²⁰ You have been called to do this because Christ also was punished for you. He showed you what you should do. So do as he did.

²⁰ Pois que glória é, se sofreis com paciência, quando cometeis pecado, e sois por isso esbofeteados? mas se sofreis com paciência, quando fazeis o bem e por isso padeceis, isto é agradável a Deus.

²¹ He did no wrong. And he told no lie.

²¹ Pois para isto fostes chamados, porquanto também Cristo padeceu por vós, deixando-vos exemplo, para que sigais as suas pisadas.

²² When people said wrong things to him, he did not say wrong things to them. When he was punished, he did not say, I will do something to you! But he trusted in God who judges what is right.

²² Ele não cometeu pecado, nem tão pouco foi achado engano na sua boca,

²³ Christ in his own body took the wrong things we have done to the cross. He did this so that we would stop our bad ways and live right. Because he was punished, you were healed.

²³ sendo injuriado, não injuriava, padecendo, não ameaçava, mas entregava-se àquele que julga justamente,

²⁴ Like lost sheep, you were going away from God. But now you have come back to the one who takes care of you and helps you.

²⁴ levando ele próprio os nossos pecados em seu corpo sobre o madeiro, a fim de que, mortos aos pecados, vivamos à justiça. Por suas feridas fostes sarados.

²⁵ Pois éreis desgarrados como ovelhas, mas agora vos haveis convertido ao Pastor e Bispo das vossas almas.
