1 These ben the wordis whiche Moyses spak to al Israel ouer Jordan, in the wildirnesse of the feeld, ayens the reed see, bitwix Pharan and Tophel and Laban and Asseroth, where is ful myche gold,
1 Neste livro estão os discursos que Moisés fez ao povo de Israel no deserto que fica a leste do rio Jordão. Os israelitas estavam no vale do rio Jordão, perto da cidade de Sufe. De um lado ficava a cidade de Parã, e do outro, as cidades de Tofel, Labã, Hazerote e Di-Zaabe.
2 by enleuene daies fro Oreb bi the weie of the hil of Seir, til to Cades Barne.
2 (Do monte Sinai até a cidade de Cades-Barneia são onze dias de viagem, pelo caminho que atravessa a região montanhosa de Edom.)
3 In the fortithe yeer, in the enleuenth monethe, in the firste dai of the monethe, Moises spak to the sones of Israel alle thingis whiche the Lord commandide to hym that he schulde seie to hem,
3 Já fazia quarenta anos que o povo de Israel tinha saído do Egito, e no primeiro dia do décimo primeiro mês Moisés disse ao povo tudo o que o Senhor Deus havia mandado que ele falasse.
4 after that he smoot Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, that dwellide in Esebon, and Og, the kyng of Basan, that dwelide in Asseroth and in Edray, ouer Jordan, in the lond of Moab.
4 Isso aconteceu depois que Moisés derrotou Seom, o rei dos amorreus, que morava na cidade de Hesbom, e Ogue, rei de Basã, que morava em Astarote e em Edrei.
5 And Moyses bigan to declare the lawe, and to seie,
5 Quando os israelitas estavam no território de Moabe, no lado leste do rio Jordão, Moisés começou a explicar ao povo a lei de Deus. Moisés disse:
6 Oure Lord God spak to vs in Oreb, and seide, It suffisith to you that ye han dwellid in this hil;
6 — Quando estávamos ao pé do monte Sinai, o Senhor , nosso Deus, nos falou assim: “Vocês já ficaram bastante tempo neste lugar.
7 turne ye ayen, and come ye to the hil of Amorreis, and to othere placis that ben next it; to places of feeldis, and of hillis, and to lowere places ayens the south, and bisidis the brenke of the see, to the lond of Cananeys, and of Liban, `til to the greet flood Eufrates.
7 Agora saiam daqui e vão caminhando na direção da região montanhosa dos amorreus e de todas as regiões vizinhas no vale do rio Jordão, e na direção das montanhas, da planície de Judá, da região sul e da costa do mar Mediterrâneo. Tomem posse de toda a terra de Canaã até os montes Líbanos, no Norte, e até o grande rio Eufrates, no Leste.
8 Lo, `he seith, Y haue youe to you; entre ye, and `welde ye `that lond on which the Lord swoor to youre fadrys, Abraham, Ysaac, and Jacob, that he schulde yyue it to hem, and to her seed after hem.
8 Aí está a terra que eu estou dando a vocês. Eu, o Senhor , jurei a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó, os antepassados de vocês, que daria essa terra a eles e aos seus descendentes. Portanto, vão e tomem posse dela.”
9 And Y seide to you in that time, Y may not aloone susteyne you, for youre Lord God hath multiplied you,
9 Em seguida Moisés disse ao povo: — Quando ainda estávamos ao pé do monte Sinai, eu lhes disse: “Eu sozinho não posso cuidar de vocês.
10 and ye ben ful many to dai, as the sterris of heuene;
10 O Senhor , nosso Deus, fez com que vocês aumentassem em número, e hoje são tantos como as estrelas do céu.
11 the Lord God of youre fadris adde to this noumbre many thousyndis, and blesse you, as he spak.
11 E que o Senhor , o Deus dos nossos antepassados, faça com que vocês sejam um povo ainda mil vezes maior do que são agora e que ele os abençoe, como prometeu!
12 Y may not aloone susteyne youre causis, and birthun, and stryues; yyue ye of you men wise `in dyuyn thingis,
12 Mas como é que eu posso, sozinho, aguentar a carga pesada de resolver todas as causas e todas as questões que aparecem no meio do povo?
13 and witti `in mennus thingis worthi to be don, whose conuersacioun is preued in youre lynagis, that Y sette hem princes to you.
13 Portanto, de cada tribo escolham homens sábios, inteligentes e competentes, para que eu os ponha como chefes de vocês.”
14 Thanne ye answeriden to me, The thing is good which thou wolt do.
14 E Moisés continuou: — Vocês responderam que seria bom fazer o que eu tinha dito.
15 And Y took of youre lynagis men wise and noble, `in vertues and kyn; and Y ordeynede hem princis, tribunes, and centuryouns, and quynquagenaries, and denys, whiche schulden teche you all thingis.
15 Por isso peguei os líderes de cada tribo, homens sábios e competentes, e os coloquei como seus chefes. Alguns eram responsáveis por mil homens; outros, por cem; outros, por cinquenta; e outros, por dez. Além desses, escolhi também outras autoridades para cada tribo.
16 And Y comaundide to hem, and seide, Here ye hem, and deme ye that that is iust, whether he be a citeseyn, whether a pilgrym.
16 Naquela mesma ocasião dei a seguinte ordem aos juízes: “Julguem todas as causas com justiça, seja entre dois israelitas, seja entre um israelita e um estrangeiro que vive no meio do povo.
17 No difference schal be of persones; ye schulen here so a litil man, `that is, pore, as a greet man, nether ye schulen take the persoone of ony man, for it is the doom of God. That if ony thing semeth hard to you, telle ye to me, and Y schal here.
17 Sejam honestos e justos nas suas decisões. Tratem todos de modo igual, tanto os humildes como os poderosos. Não tenham medo de ninguém, pois a sentença que vocês derem virá de Deus. Se algum caso for muito difícil para vocês, tragam para mim, que eu o julgarei.”
18 And Y comaundide alle thingis whiche ye ouyten to do.
18 — E assim naquele tempo eu lhes dei ordens a respeito de todas as coisas que vocês deviam fazer.
19 Forsothe we yeden forth fro Oreb, and passiden bi a feerdful deseert, and grettiste wildirnesse, which ye sien, bi the weye of the hil of Ammorrey, as oure Lord God comaundide to vs. And whanne we hadden come in to Cades Barne,
19 Moisés disse também ao povo: — Nós obedecemos à ordem do
20 Y seide to you, Ye ben comen to the hil of Ammorrey, which youre Lord God schal yyue to you;
20 Ali eu disse a vocês: “Agora estamos na região montanhosa dos amorreus, a terra que o nosso Deus nos está dando.
21 se thou the lond which thi Lord God schal yyue to thee; `stie thou, and welde it, as oure Lord God spak to thi fadris; `nyle thou drede, nether `drede thou in herte ony thing.
21 Portanto, vão e tomem posse dessa terra que está diante de vocês, como o Senhor , o Deus dos nossos antepassados, mandou. Não tenham medo, nem se assustem.”
22 And alle ye neiyiden to me, and ye seiden, Sende we men, that schulen biholde the lond, and telle to vs bi what weye we owen stie, and to whiche citees we owen to go.
22 Aí todos vocês chegaram perto de mim e disseram: “Seria bom que mandássemos na frente de nós alguns homens para espionarem a terra e trazerem informações a respeito do caminho que devemos seguir e das cidades que vamos encontrar lá.”
23 And whanne the word pleside to me, Y sente of you twelue men, of ech lynage oon.
23 Eu concordei com a ideia e escolhi doze homens, um de cada tribo .
24 And whanne thei hadden go, and hadden stied in to the hilli places, thei camen `til to the valei of Clustre; and whanne thei hadden biholde the lond,
24 Eles foram até a região montanhosa e chegaram ao vale de Escol. Depois de verem o que havia no vale,
25 thei token of the fruytis therof, to schewe the plentee, and brouyten `to vs, and seiden, The lond is good which oure Lord God schal yyue to vs.
25 eles voltaram, trazendo algumas frutas que encontraram lá. E nos contaram que a terra que o Senhor , nosso Deus, nos estava dando era boa.
26 And ye `nolden stie, but ye weren vnbileueful to the word of oure Lord God.
26 — Mas vocês desobedeceram à ordem do Senhor e não quiseram tomar posse da terra.
27 And ye grutchiden in youre tabernaclis, and ye seiden, The Lord hatith vs, and herfor he ledde vs out of the lond of Egipt, that he schulde bitake vs in the hond of Ammorey, and schulde do awei vs.
27 Em vez disso, ficaram nas suas barracas, queixando-se e dizendo: “O Senhor está com ódio de nós; ele nos trouxe do Egito para sermos derrotados e mortos pelos amorreus.
28 Whidur schulen we stie? the messangeris maden aferd oure herte, and seiden, A grettiste multitude is, and largere in stature than we; the citees ben greete, and wallid `til to the heuene; we sien there the sones of Enachym, that is, giauntis.
28 Que terra é essa que temos de conquistar? Nós ficamos com medo quando os nossos espiões disseram que o povo dessa terra é mais numeroso e mais forte do que nós, e que as suas cidades são enormes e protegidas por muralhas que chegam até o céu! E disseram também que viram gigantes lá!”
29 And Y seide to you, `Nyle ye drede `with ynne, nether `drede withoutforth; the Lord God hym silf,
29 — Então respondi: “Não se assustem, nem tenham medo dessa gente.
30 which is youre ledere, schal fiyte for you, as he dide in Egipt, while alle men sien.
30 Pois o Senhor , nosso Deus, vai adiante de nós e ele combaterá por nós. Ele fará a mesma coisa que vocês o viram fazer em nosso favor no Egito
31 And ye sien in the wildirnesse, thi Lord God bar thee, as a man is wont to bere his litil sone, in al the weie bi which ye yeden til ye camen to this place.
31 e também no deserto. Vocês viram como o nosso Deus nos levou pelo deserto, como um pai leva o seu filho, e nos guiou o tempo todo até que chegamos a este lugar.”
32 And sotheli nether so ye bileueden to youre Lord God, that yede bifor you in the weie,
32 — Mas mesmo assim vocês não confiaram no Senhor ,
33 and mesuride the place in which ye ouyten to sette tentis, and schewide in nyyt the weie to you bi fier, and in dai bi a piler of cloude.
33 que sempre ia adiante de vocês, na coluna de fogo durante a noite e na coluna de nuvem durante o dia. Ele fazia isso para mostrar o lugar onde vocês deviam armar o acampamento e para indicar o caminho que deviam seguir.
34 And whanne the Lord hadde herd the vois of youre wordis, he was wrooth,
34 Moisés continuou: — Quando o
35 and swoor, and seide, Noon of the men of this werste generacioun schal se the good lond, which Y bihiyte vndur an ooth to youre fadris,
35 “Vocês, israelitas, são um povo mau. Por isso nenhum de vocês que é adulto verá a boa terra que eu prometi dar aos seus antepassados.
36 outakun Caleph, the sone of Jephone; for he schal se it, and Y schal yyue to hym the lond on which he trad, and to hise sones, for he suede the Lord.
36 Somente Calebe, filho de Jefoné, verá essa terra. Calebe foi sempre fiel e obediente a mim, o Senhor , e por isso darei a ele e aos seus descendentes a terra por onde ele andou.”
37 Nether the indignacioun ayens the puple is wondirful, sithen the Lord was wrooth also to me for you, and seide,
37 — E foi por causa de vocês que o Senhor ficou irado comigo também e me disse: “Você também não vai entrar na Terra Prometida .
38 Nether thou schalt entre thidur, but Josue, the sone of Nun, thi mynystre, he schal entre for thee; excyte and strengthe thou him, and he schal departe the lond bi lot to Israel.
38 O seu ajudante, Josué, filho de Num, é que vai entrar. Anime-o, pois ele vai comandar o povo de Israel na conquista da terra.”
39 Youre litle children, of whiche ye seiden, that thei schulden be led prisoneris, and the sones that kunnen not to dai the diuersite of good and of yuel, thei schulen entre; and Y schal yyue to hem the lond, and thei schulen welde it.
39 — Depois Deus disse a todos nós: “Os seus filhos são crianças e não sabem a diferença entre o que é certo e o que é errado. E vocês estavam pensando que eles iam cair nas mãos dos inimigos. Mas eles, os seus filhos, entrarão na Terra Prometida. Eu lhes darei essa terra, e eles serão donos dela.
40 Sotheli turne ye ayen, and go ye in to the wildirnesse, bi the weie of the Reed See.
40 Agora continuem caminhando pelo deserto na direção do golfo de Ácaba.”
41 And ye answeriden to me, We synneden to the Lord; we schulen stie, and we schulen fiyte, as oure Lord God comaundide. And whanne ye weren arayed with armeris, and yeden `into the hil, the Lord seide to me,
41 — Então vocês responderam: “Moisés, nós pecamos contra Deus, o Senhor . Mas agora estamos resolvidos a obedecer às ordens do nosso Deus e atacar o inimigo.” Aí cada um de vocês se aprontou para a batalha, pensando que seria fácil conquistar a região montanhosa.
42 Seie thou to hem, `Nyle ye stye, nether fiyte ye, for Y am not with you, lest ye fallen bifor youre enemyes.
42 Mas o Senhor mandou que eu dissesse a vocês: “Não vão lá, nem entrem em nenhum combate, pois eu não irei com vocês, e os seus inimigos os derrotarão.”
43 Y spak, and ye herden not; but ye `weren aduersaries to the comaundement of the Lord, and bolnden with prijde, and stieden in to the hil.
43 Porém vocês não me deram atenção; pelo contrário, ficaram cheios de orgulho, desobedeceram às ordens de Deus, o Senhor , e invadiram a região montanhosa.
44 Therfor Ammorrey yede out, that dwellide in the hillis, and he cam ayens you, and pursuede you, as bees ben wont to pursue, and killide fro Seir til Horma. And whanne ye turneden ayen,
44 Aí os amorreus que moravam naquela região saíram contra vocês, como um enxame de abelhas bravas. Vocês fugiram, e os amorreus os perseguiram até o território de Edom e os derrotaram na cidade de Horma.
45 and wepten bifor the Lord, he herde not you, nether wolde asente to youre vois;
45 Então vocês voltaram e clamaram pedindo ajuda ao Senhor , mas ele não lhes deu atenção, nem os atendeu.
46 therfor ye saten in Cades Barne bi myche tyme.
46 E depois disso ficamos muito tempo em Cades.
