1 Now there was one of the Pharisees whose name was Nicodemus–a ruler among the Jews.
1 Havia um fariseu chamado Nicodemos, que era líder dos judeus.
2 He came to Jesus by night and said, »Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher from God; for no one can do these miracles which you are doing, unless God is with him.
2 Uma noite ele foi visitar Jesus e disse: — Rabi, nós sabemos que o senhor é um mestre que Deus enviou, pois ninguém pode fazer esses milagres se Deus não estiver com ele.
3 »In most solemn truth I tell you,« answered Jesus, »that unless a man is born anew he cannot see the Kingdom of God.«
3 Jesus respondeu:
4 »How is it possible,« Nicodemus asked, »for a man to be born when he is old? Can he a second time enter his mother's womb and be born?«
4 Nicodemos perguntou: — Como é que um homem velho pode nascer de novo? Será que ele pode voltar para a barriga da sua mãe e nascer outra vez?
5 »In most solemn truth I tell you,« replied Jesus, »that unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.
5 Jesus disse:
6 Whatever has been born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever has been born of the Spirit is spirit.
6 Quem nasce de pais humanos é um ser de natureza humana; quem nasce do Espírito é um ser de natureza espiritual.
7 Do not be astonished at my telling you, `You must all be born anew.'
7 Por isso não fique admirado porque eu disse que todos vocês precisam nascer de novo.
8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So is it with every one who has been born of the Spirit.«
8 O vento sopra onde quer, e ouve-se o barulho que ele faz, mas não se sabe de onde ele vem, nem para onde vai. A mesma coisa acontece com todos os que nascem do Espírito.
9 »How is all this possible?« asked Nicodemus.
9 — Como pode ser isso? — perguntou Nicodemos.
10 »Are you,« replied Jesus, »`the Teacher of Israel,' and yet do you not understand these things?
10 Jesus respondeu:
11 In most solemn truth I tell you that we speak what we know, and give testimony of that of which we were eye-witnesses, and yet you all reject our testimony.
11 Pois eu afirmo ao senhor que isto é verdade: nós falamos daquilo que sabemos e contamos o que temos visto, mas vocês não querem aceitar a nossa mensagem.
12 If I have told you earthly things and none of you believe me, how will you believe me if I tell you of things in Heaven?
12 Se vocês não creem quando falo das coisas deste mundo, como vão crer se eu falar das coisas do céu?
13 There is no one who has gone up to Heaven, but there is One who has come down from Heaven, namely the Son of Man whose home is in Heaven.
13 Ninguém subiu ao céu, a não ser o
14 And just as Moses lifted high the serpent in the Desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
14 — Assim como Moisés, no deserto, levantou a cobra de bronze numa estaca, assim também o Filho do Homem tem de ser levantado,
15 in order that every one who trusts in Him may have the Life of the Ages.«
15 para que todos os que crerem nele tenham a vida eterna.
16 For so greatly did God love the world that He gave His only Son, that every one who trusts in Him may not perish but may have the Life of Ages.
16 Porque Deus amou o mundo tanto, que deu o seu único Filho, para que todo aquele que nele crer não morra, mas tenha a vida eterna.
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
17 Pois Deus mandou o seu Filho para salvar o mundo e não para julgá-lo.
18 He who trusts in Him does not come up for judgement. He who does not trust has already received sentence, because he has not his trust resting on the name of God's only Son.
18 — Aquele que crê no Filho não é julgado; mas quem não crê já está julgado porque não crê no Filho único de Deus.
19 And this is the test by which men are judged–the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness more than they loved the Light, because their deeds were wicked.
19 E é assim que o julgamento é feito: Deus mandou a luz ao mundo, mas as pessoas preferiram a escuridão porque fazem o que é mau.
20 For every wrongdoer hates the light, and does not come to the light, for fear his actions should be exposed and condemned.
20 Pois todos os que fazem o mal odeiam a luz e fogem dela, para que ninguém veja as coisas más que eles fazem.
21 But he who does what is honest and right comes to the light, in order that his actions may be plainly shown to have been done in God.
21 Mas os que vivem de acordo com a verdade procuram a luz, a fim de que possa ser visto claramente que as suas ações são feitas de acordo com a vontade de Deus.
22 After this Jesus and His disciples went into Judaea; and there He made a stay in company with them and baptized.
22 Depois disso, Jesus e os seus discípulos foram para a região da Judeia. Ele ficou algum tempo com eles ali e batizava as pessoas.
23 And John too was baptizing at Aenon, near Salim, because there were many pools of water there; and people came and received baptism.
23 João também estava batizando em Enom, perto de Salim, porque lá havia muita água.
24 (For John was not yet in prison.)
24 (João ainda não tinha sido preso.)
25 As the result, a discussion having arisen on the part of John's disciples with a Jew about purification,
25 Alguns discípulos de João tiveram uma discussão com um judeu sobre a cerimônia de purificação .
26 they came to John and reported to him, »Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of the Jordan and to whom you bore testimony is now baptizing, and great numbers of people are resorting to him.«
26 Eles foram dizer a João: — Mestre, aquele homem que estava com o senhor no outro lado do rio Jordão está batizando as pessoas. O senhor falou sobre ele, lembra? E todos estão indo atrás dele.
27 »A man cannot obtain anything,« replied John, »unless it has been granted to him from Heaven.
27 João respondeu: — Ninguém pode ter alguma coisa se ela não for dada por Deus.
28 You yourselves can bear witness to my having said, `I am not the Christ,' but `I am His appointed forerunner.'
28 Vocês são testemunhas de que eu disse: “Eu não sou o Messias , mas fui enviado adiante dele.”
29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; and the bridegroom's friend who stands by his side and listens to him, rejoices heartily on account of the bridegroom's happiness. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete.
29 Num casamento, o noivo é aquele a quem a noiva pertence. O amigo do noivo está ali, e o escuta, e se alegra quando ouve a voz dele. Assim também o que está acontecendo com Jesus me faz ficar completamente alegre.
30 He must grow greater, but I must grow less.
30 Ele tem de ficar cada vez mais importante, e eu, menos importante.
31 He who comes from above is above all. He whose origin is from the earth is not only himself from the earth, his teaching also is from the earth. He who comes from Heaven is above all.
31 Aquele que vem de cima é o mais importante de todos, e quem vem da terra é da terra e fala das coisas terrenas. Quem vem do céu é o mais importante de todos.
32 What He has seen and heard, to that He bears witness; but His testimony no one receives.
32 Ele fala daquilo que viu e ouviu, mas ninguém aceita a sua mensagem.
33 Any man who has received His testimony has solemnly declared that God is true.
33 Quem aceita a sua mensagem dá prova de que o que Deus diz é verdade.
34 For He whom God has sent speaks God's words; for God does not give the Spirit with limitations.«
34 Aquele que Deus enviou diz as palavras de Deus porque Deus dá do seu Espírito sem medida.
35 The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to His hands.
35 O Pai ama o Filho e pôs tudo nas mãos dele.
36 He who believes in the Son has the Life of the Ages; he who disobeys the Son will not enter into Life, but God's anger remains upon him.
36 Por isso quem crê no Filho tem a vida eterna; porém quem desobedece ao Filho nunca terá a vida eterna, mas sofrerá para sempre o castigo de Deus.
