1 You then, my child, must be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
1 Tu, pois, meu filho, fortifica-te na graça que há em Cristo Jesus.
2 All that you have been taught by me in the hearing of many witnesses, you must hand on to trusty men who shall themselves, in turn, be competent to instruct others also.
2 E o que de mim, entre muitas testemunhas, ouviste, confia-o a homens fiéis, que sejam idôneos para também ensinarem os outros.
3 As a good soldier of Christ Jesus accept your share of suffering.
3 Tu pois, sofre as aflições, como bom soldado de Jesus Cristo.
4 Every one who serves as a soldier keeps himself from becoming entangled in the world's business–so that he may satisfy the officer who enlisted him.
4 Ninguém que milita se embaraça com negócios desta vida, a fim de agradar àquele que o alistou para a guerra.
5 And if any one takes part in an athletic contest, he gets no prize unless he obeys the rules.
5 E, se alguém também milita, não é coroado se não militar legitimamente.
6 The harvestman who labours in the field must be the first to get a share of the crop.
6 O lavrador que trabalha deve ser o primeiro a gozar dos frutos.
7 Mark well what I am saying: the Lord will give you discernment in everything.
7 Considera o que digo, e o Senhor te dê entendimento em tudo.
8 Never forget that Jesus Christ has risen from among the dead and is a descendant of David, as is declared in the Good News which I preach.
8 Lembra-te de que Jesus Cristo, que é da descendência de Davi, ressuscitou dentre os mortos, segundo o meu evangelho;
9 For preaching the Good News I suffer, and am even put in chains, as if I were a criminal: yet the word of God is not imprisoned.
9 Por isso sofro trabalhos e até prisões, como um malfeitor; mas a palavra de Deus não está presa.
10 For this reason I endure all things for the sake of God's own people; so that they also may obtain salvation –even the salvation which is in Christ Jesus– and with it eternal glory.
10 Portanto, tudo sofro por amor dos escolhidos, para que também eles alcancem a salvação que está em Cristo Jesus com glória eterna.
11 Faithful is the saying: »If we died with Him, we shall also live with Him;
11 Palavra fiel é esta: que, se morrermos com ele, também com ele viveremos;
12 »If we patiently endure pain, we shall also share His Kingship;« If we disown Him, He will also disown us;
12 Se sofrermos, também com ele reinaremos; se o negarmos, também ele nos negará;
13 »And even if our faith fails, He remains true–He cannot prove false to Himself.«
13 Se formos infiéis, ele permanece fiel; não pode negar-se a si mesmo.
14 Bring all this to men's remembrances, solemnly charging them in the presence of God not to waste time in wrangling about mere words, a course which is altogether unprofitable and tends only to the ruin of the hearers.
14 Traze estas coisas à memória, ordenando-lhes diante do Senhor que não tenham contendas de palavras, que para nada aproveitam e são para perversão dos ouvintes.
15 Earnestly seek to commend yourself to God as a servant who, because of his straightforward dealing with the word of truth, has no reason to feel any shame.
15 Procura apresentar-te a Deus aprovado, como obreiro que não tem de que se envergonhar, que maneja bem a palavra da verdade.
16 But from irreligious and frivolous talk hold aloof, for those who indulge in it will proceed from bad to worse in impiety,
16 Mas evita os falatórios profanos, porque produzirão maior impiedade.
17 and their teaching will spread like a running sore. Hymenaeus and Philetus are men of that stamp.
17 E a palavra desses roerá como gangrena; entre os quais são Himeneu e Fileto;
18 In the matter of the truth they have gone astray, saying that the Resurrection is already past, and so they are overthrowing the faith of some.
18 Os quais se desviaram da verdade, dizendo que a ressurreição era já feita, e perverteram a fé de alguns.
19 Yet God's solid foundation stands unmoved, bearing this inscription, »The Lord knows those who really belong to Him.« And this also, »Let every one who names the Name of the Lord renounce all wickedness.«
19 Todavia o fundamento de Deus fica firme, tendo este selo: O Senhor conhece os que são seus, e qualquer que profere o nome de Cristo aparte-se da iniqüidade.
20 Now in a great house there are not only articles of gold and silver, but also others of wood and of earthenware; and some are for specially honourable, and others for common use.
20 Ora, numa grande casa não somente há vasos de ouro e de prata, mas também de pau e de barro; uns para honra, outros, porém, para desonra.
21 If therefore a man keeps himself clear of these latter, he himself will be for specially honourable use, consecrated, fit for the Master's service, and fully equipped for every good work.
21 De sorte que, se alguém se purificar destas coisas, será vaso para honra, santificado e idôneo para uso do Senhor, e preparado para toda a boa obra.
22 Keep a strong curb, however, on your youthful cravings; and strive for integrity, good faith, love, peace, in company with all who pray to the Lord with pure hearts.
22 Foge também das paixões da mocidade; e segue a justiça, a fé, o amor, e a paz com os que, com um coração puro, invocam o Senhor.
23 But avoid foolish discussions with ignorant men, knowing –as you do– that these lead to quarrels;
23 E rejeita as questões loucas, e sem instrução, sabendo que produzem contendas.
24 and a bondservant of the Lord must not quarrel, but must be inoffensive towards all men, a skilful teacher, and patient under wrongs.
24 E ao servo do Senhor não convém contender, mas sim, ser manso para com todos, apto para ensinar, sofredor;
25 He must speak in a gentle tone when correcting the errors of opponents, in the hope that God will at last give them repentance, for them to come to a full knowledge of the truth
25 Instruindo com mansidão os que resistem, a ver se porventura Deus lhes dará arrependimento para conhecerem a verdade,
26 and recover sober-mindedness and freedom from the Devil's snare, though they are now entrapped by him to do his will.
26 E tornarem a despertar, desprendendo-se dos laços do diabo, em que à vontade dele estão presos.
