1 Forasmuch as many have undertaken to compose a narrative of the facts which have been fully confirmed among us,
1 Visto que muitos já empreenderam uma narração coordenada dos fatos que entre nós se realizaram,
2 Even as they who were eye-witnesses and ministers of the word from the beginning, delivered them to us:
2 conforme nos transmitiram os que desde o princípio foram deles testemunhas oculares e ministros da palavra,
3 It seemed good to me also, having accurately traced all things from their first rise, to write unto thee in order, most noble Theophilus,
3 igualmente a mim pareceu bem, depois de cuidadosa investigação de tudo desde a sua origem, dar-lhe por escrito, excelentíssimo Teófilo, uma exposição em ordem,
4 That thou mayst know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
4 para que você tenha plena certeza das verdades em que foi instruído.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
5 Nos dias de Herodes, rei da Judeia, houve um sacerdote chamado Zacarias, do turno de Abias. A mulher dele era das filhas de Arão e se chamava Isabel.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
6 Ambos eram justos diante de Deus, vivendo de forma irrepreensível em todos os preceitos e mandamentos do Senhor.
7 And they had no child, because Elisabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
7 Eles não tinham filhos, porque Isabel era estéril, e os dois já tinham idade avançada.
8 And while he executed the priest's office before God,
8 E aconteceu que, enquanto Zacarias exercia o sacerdócio diante de Deus na ordem do seu turno, coube-lhe por sorteio,
9 in the order of his course, According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn the incense, going into the temple of the Lord.
9 segundo o costume sacerdotal, entrar no santuário do Senhor para queimar o incenso.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the time of incense.
10 Durante esse tempo, toda a multidão do povo permanecia na parte de fora, orando.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
11 E eis que apareceu a Zacarias um anjo do Senhor, em pé, à direita do altar do incenso.
12 And Zacharias seeing him was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
12 Ao vê-lo, Zacarias ficou assustado, e o temor se apoderou dele.
13 But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
13 O anjo, porém, lhe disse: — Não tenha medo, Zacarias, porque a sua oração foi ouvida. Isabel, sua esposa, dará à luz um filho, a quem você dará o nome de João.
14 And thou shalt have joy and exultation, and many shall rejoice at his birth.
14 Você ficará alegre e feliz, e muitos ficarão contentes com o nascimento dele.
15 For he shall be great before the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
15 Pois ele será grande diante do Senhor, não beberá vinho nem bebida forte, e será cheio do Espírito Santo, já desde o ventre materno.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
16 Ele converterá muitos dos filhos de Israel ao Senhor, seu Deus.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
17 E irá adiante do Senhor no espírito e poder de Elias, para converter o coração dos pais aos filhos, converter os desobedientes à prudência dos justos e habilitar para o Senhor um povo preparado.
18 And Zacharias said to the angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife advanced in years.
18 Então Zacarias perguntou ao anjo: — Como terei certeza disso? Pois eu sou velho, e a minha mulher também já tem idade avançada.
19 And the angel answering, said to him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak to thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
19 O anjo respondeu: — Eu sou Gabriel, que estou a serviço de Deus, e fui enviado para falar com você e lhe trazer esta boa notícia.
20 And behold, thou shalt be deaf, and not able to speak, till the day that these things are done, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
20 Todavia, você ficará mudo e não poderá falar até o dia em que estas coisas vierem a acontecer, porque você não acreditou nas minhas palavras, as quais, no devido tempo, se cumprirão.
21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
21 O povo estava esperando Zacarias e admirava-se com a demora dele no santuário.
22 And coming out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived, that he had seen a vision; for he beckoned to them, and remained speechless.
22 Quando Zacarias saiu, não lhes podia falar. Então entenderam que ele havia tido uma visão no santuário. E expressava-se por sinais e permanecia mudo.
23 And when the days of his ministration were accomplished, he went to his own house.
23 Aconteceu que, terminados os dias do seu ministério, Zacarias voltou para casa.
24 And after these days, his wife Elisabeth conceived,
24 Passados esses dias, Isabel, a mulher de Zacarias, ficou grávida. E ela não saiu de casa durante cinco meses, dizendo:
25 and hid herself five months, saying, Thus hath the Lord done to me, in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.
25 — Foi isto o que o Senhor me fez, ao contemplar-me, para acabar com a minha vergonha diante das pessoas.
26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God, to a city of Galilee,
26 No sexto mês, o anjo Gabriel foi enviado por Deus a uma cidade da Galileia, chamada Nazaré,
27 named Nazareth, To a virgin of the house of David, espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, and the virgin's name was Mary.
27 a uma virgem que estava comprometida a casar com um homem da casa de Davi, cujo nome era José. A virgem se chamava Maria.
28 And the angel coming in to her, said, Hail, thou highly favoured; the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
28 E, aproximando-se dela, o anjo disse: — Salve, agraciada! O Senhor está com você.
29 But she seeing him, was troubled at his saying, and reasoned, what manner of salutation this should be.
29 Ela, porém, ao ouvir esta palavra, perturbou-se muito e pôs-se a pensar no que poderia significar esta saudação.
30 And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
30 Mas o anjo lhe disse: — Não tenha medo, Maria; porque você foi abençoada por Deus.
31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
31 Você ficará grávida e dará à luz um filho, a quem chamará pelo nome de Jesus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David.
32 Este será grande e será chamado Filho do Altíssimo. Deus, o Senhor, lhe dará o trono de Davi, seu pai.
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob; for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
33 Ele reinará para sempre sobre a casa de Jacó, e o seu reinado não terá fim.
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
34 Então Maria disse ao anjo: — Como será isto, se eu nunca tive relações com homem algum?
35 And the angel answering said to her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that Holy thing which shall be born, shall be called the Son of God.
35 O anjo respondeu: — O Espírito Santo virá sobre você, e o poder do Altíssimo a envolverá com a sua sombra; por isso, também o ente santo que há de nascer será chamado Filho de Deus.
36 And behold thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
36 E Isabel, sua parenta, igualmente está grávida, apesar de sua idade avançada, sendo este já o sexto mês de gestação para aquela que diziam ser estéril.
37 For with God, nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it unto me according to thy word.
37 Porque para Deus não há nada impossível.
38 And the angel departed from her.
38 Então Maria disse: — Aqui está a serva do Senhor; que aconteça comigo o que você falou. Então o anjo foi embora.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went with haste into the hill-country, into a city of Judah ,
39 Naqueles dias, Maria se aprontou e foi depressa à região montanhosa, a uma cidade de Judá.
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
40 Entrou na casa de Zacarias e saudou Isabel.
41 And when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb: and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost,
41 Quando Isabel ouviu a saudação de Maria, a criança lhe estremeceu no ventre. Então Isabel ficou cheia do Espírito Santo.
42 And cried with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
42 E exclamou em alta voz: — Bendita é você entre as mulheres, e bendito o fruto do seu ventre!
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
43 E que grande honra é para mim receber a visita da mãe do meu Senhor!
44 For lo! when the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
44 Pois, logo que me chegou aos ouvidos a voz da saudação que você fez, a criança estremeceu de alegria dentro de mim.
45 And happy is she that believed; for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
45 Bem-aventurada a que creu, porque serão cumpridas as palavras que lhe foram ditas da parte do Senhor.
46 And Mary said,
46 Então Maria disse: “A minha alma engrandece ao Senhor,
47 My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
47 e o meu espírito se alegrou em Deus, meu Salvador,
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
48 porque ele atentou para a humildade da sua serva. Pois, desde agora, todas as gerações me considerarão bem-aventurada,
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things, and holy is his name.
49 porque o Poderoso me fez grandes coisas. Santo é o seu nome.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation.
50 A sua misericórdia vai de geração em geração sobre os que o temem.
51 He hath wrought strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
51 Agiu com o seu braço valorosamente; dispersou os que, no coração, alimentavam pensamentos soberbos.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted them of low degree.
52 Derrubou dos seus tronos os poderosos e exaltou os humildes.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things, but sent the rich empty away.
53 Encheu de bens os famintos e despediu vazios os ricos.
54 He hath helped his servant Israel,
54 Amparou Israel, seu servo, a fim de lembrar-se da sua misericórdia
55 in remembrance of his mercy, As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.
55 a favor de Abraão e de sua descendência, para sempre, como havia prometido aos nossos pais.”
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
56 Maria permaneceu cerca de três meses com Isabel e voltou para casa.
57 Now Elisabeth's full time came, that she should be delivered, and she brought forth a son.
57 Quando chegou o tempo de Isabel dar à luz, ela teve um filho.
58 And her neighbours and relations heard, that the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her.
58 Os vizinhos e parentes ouviram que o Senhor tinha usado de grande misericórdia para com Isabel e se alegraram com ela.
59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
59 Aconteceu que, no oitavo dia, foram circuncidar o menino e queriam dar-lhe o nome de seu pai, Zacarias.
60 But his mother answering said, Nay, but he shall be called John.
60 Mas a mãe do menino disse: — De modo nenhum! Ele será chamado João.
61 And they said to her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
61 Disseram-lhe: — Mas você não tem nenhum parente com esse nome!
62 And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called.
62 Fizeram sinais, perguntando ao pai do menino que nome queria que lhe dessem.
63 And asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
63 Então, pedindo uma tabuinha, ele escreveu: — O nome dele é João. E todos se admiraram.
64 And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, praising God.
64 Imediatamente a boca de Zacarias se abriu e a língua se soltou. Então começou a falar, louvando a Deus.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them, and all these things were noised abroad, in all the hill-country of Judea.
65 Todos os vizinhos deles ficaram possuídos de temor, e essas coisas foram divulgadas por toda a região montanhosa da Judeia.
66 And all that heard them, laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
66 Todos os que as ouviram guardavam-nas no coração, dizendo: — O que virá a ser este menino? E a mão do Senhor estava com ele.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel;
67 Zacarias, o pai de João, cheio do Espírito Santo, profetizou, dizendo:
68 for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
68 “Bendito seja o Senhor, Deus de Israel, porque visitou e redimiu o seu povo,
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, in the house of his servant David:
69 e nos suscitou plena e poderosa salvação na casa de Davi, seu servo,
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, who have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies,
70 como havia prometido, desde a antiguidade, por boca dos seus santos profetas,
71 and from the hand of all that hate us;
71 para nos libertar dos nossos inimigos e das mãos de todos os que nos odeiam;
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
72 para usar de misericórdia com os nossos pais e lembrar-se da sua santa aliança
73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
73 e do juramento que fez a nosso pai Abraão,
74 That he would grant us, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies,
74 de conceder-nos que, livres das mãos de inimigos, o adorássemos sem temor,
75 to serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
75 em santidade e justiça diante dele, todos os nossos dias.
76 And thou, child, shalt be a prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways,
76 E você, menino, será chamado profeta do Altíssimo, porque precederá o Senhor, preparando-lhe os caminhos,
77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, by the remission of their sins,
77 para dar ao seu povo conhecimento da salvação, por meio da remissão dos seus pecados,
78 Thro' the tender mercy of our God, whereby the Day-spring from on high hath visited us,
78 graças à profunda misericórdia de nosso Deus, pela qual nos visitará o sol nascente das alturas,
79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct our feet into the way of peace.
79 para iluminar os que jazem nas trevas e na sombra da morte, e dirigir os nossos pés pelo caminho da paz.”
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts, till the day of his being shewn to Israel.
80 O menino crescia e se fortalecia em espírito. E viveu nos desertos até o dia em que havia de manifestar-se a Israel.
