1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
1 Mas Jonas ficou profundamente descontente com isso e enfureceu-se.
2 And he prayed to Yahweh, and said, I pray you, O Yahweh, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness, and one who repents of the evil.
2 Ele orou ao Senhor: "Senhor, não foi isso que eu disse quando ainda estava em casa? Foi por isso que me apressei em fugir para Társis. Eu sabia que tu és Deus misericordioso e compassivo, muito paciente, cheio de amor e que promete castigar mas depois se arrepende.
3 Therefore now, O Yahweh, take, I urge you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
3 Agora, Senhor, tira a minha vida, eu imploro, porque para mim é melhor morrer do que viver".
4 And Yahweh said, Do you well to be angry?
4 O Senhor lhe respondeu: "Você tem alguma razão para essa fúria? "
5 Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made for himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.
5 Jonas saiu e sentou-se num lugar a leste da cidade. Ali, construiu para si um abrigo, sentou-se à sua sombra e esperou para ver o que aconteceria com a cidade.
6 And Yahweh God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his evil case. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the gourd.
6 Então o Senhor Deus fez crescer uma planta sobre Jonas, para dar sombra à sua cabeça e livrá-lo do calor, e Jonas ficou muito alegre.
7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it struck the gourd, that it withered.
7 Mas na madrugada do dia seguinte, Deus mandou uma lagarta atacar a planta de modo que ela secou.
8 And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
8 Ao nascer do sol, Deus trouxe um vento oriental muito quente, e o sol bateu na cabeça de Jonas, a ponto de ele quase desmaiar. Com isso ele desejou morrer, e disse: "Para mim seria melhor morrer do que viver".
9 And God said to Jonah, Do you well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even to death.
9 Mas Deus disse a Jonas: "Você tem alguma razão para estar tão furioso por causa da planta? " Respondeu ele: "Sim, tenho! E estou furioso a ponto de querer morrer".
10 And Yahweh said, You have had regard for the gourd, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
10 Mas o Senhor lhe disse: "Você tem pena dessa planta, embora não a tenha podado nem a tenha feito crescer. Ela nasceu numa noite e numa noite morreu.
11 and should I not have regard for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than sixscore thousand of man who can't discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
11 Contudo, Nínive tem mais de cento e vinte mil pessoas que não sabem nem distinguir a mão direita da esquerda, além de muitos rebanhos. Não deveria eu ter pena dessa grande cidade? "
