1 You yourselves were once dead because of your offenses and sins.
1 E vós outros estáveis mortos por vossas faltas, pelos pecados
2 For at one time you lived in sin, following the ways of the world, in subjection to the Ruler of the powers of the air — the Spirit who is still at work among the disobedient.
2 que cometestes outrora seguindo o modo de viver deste mundo, do príncipe das potestades do ar, do espírito que agora atua nos rebeldes.
3 And it was among them that we all once lived our lives, indulging the cravings of our earthly nature, and carrying out the desires prompted by that earthly nature and by our own thoughts. Our nature exposed us to the divine wrath, like the rest of humanity.
3 Também todos nós éramos deste número quando outrora vivíamos nos desejos carnais, fazendo a vontade da carne e da concupiscência. Éramos como os outros, por natureza, verdadeiros objetos da ira {divina}.
4 Yet God, in his abundant compassion, and because of the great love with which he loved us,
4 Mas Deus, que é rico em misericórdia, impulsionado pelo grande amor com que nos amou,
5 even though we were ‘dead’ because of our offenses, gave life to us in giving life to the Christ. (By God’s loving kindness you have been saved.)
5 quando estávamos mortos em conseqüência de nossos pecados, deu-nos a vida juntamente com Cristo - é por graça que fostes salvos! -,
6 And, through our union with Christ Jesus, God raised us with him, and caused us to sit with him on high,
6 juntamente com ele nos ressuscitou e nos fez assentar nos céus, com Cristo Jesus.
7 in order that, by his goodness to us in Christ Jesus, he might display in the ages to come the boundless wealth of his loving kindness.
7 Ele demonstrou assim pelos séculos futuros a imensidão das riquezas de sua graça, pela bondade que tem para conosco, em Jesus Cristo.
8 For it is by God’s loving kindness that you have been saved, through your faith. It is not due to yourselves; the gift is God’s.
8 Porque é gratuitamente que fostes salvos mediante a fé. Isto não provém de vossos méritos, mas é puro dom de Deus.
9 It is not due to obedience to law, so that no one can boast.
9 Não provém das obras, para que ninguém se glorie.
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created, by our union with Christ Jesus, for the good actions in doing which God had pre-arranged that we should spend our lives.
10 Somos obra sua, criados em Jesus Cristo para as boas ações, que Deus de antemão preparou para que nós as praticássemos.
11 Remember, therefore, that you were once Gentiles yourselves, as your bodies showed; you were called ‘The Uncircumcised’ by those who were called ‘The Circumcised’ — circumcised only by human hands!
11 Lembrai-vos, pois, de que outrora vós, gentios por nascimento - que sois chamados incircuncisos por aqueles que se dizem circuncida dos, os que levam na carne a circuncisão feita por mãos humanas -,
12 Remember that you were at that time far from Christ; you were shut out from the citizenship of Israel; you were strangers to the Covenants founded on God’s Promise; you were in the world without hope and without God.
12 lembrai-vos de que naquele tempo estáveis sem Cristo, sem direito da cidadania em Israel, alheios às alianças, sem esperança da promessa e sem Deus, neste mundo.
13 But now, through your union with Christ Jesus, you who once were ‘far off’ have, by the shedding of the blood of the Christ, been brought ‘near.’
13 Agora, porém, graças a Jesus Cristo, vós que antes estáveis longe, vos tornastes presentes, pelo sangue de Cristo.
14 He it is who is our peace. He made the two divisions of humanity one, broke down the barrier that separated them,
14 Porque é ele a nossa paz, ele que de dois povos fez um só, destruindo o muro de inimizade que os separava,
15 and in his human nature put an end to the cause of enmity between them — the law with its injunctions and ordinances — in order to create, through union with himself, from Jew and Gentile, one new humanity and so make peace.
15 abolindo na própria carne a lei, os preceitos e as prescrições. Desse modo, ele queria fazer em si mesmo dos dois povos uma única humanidade nova pelo restabelecimento da paz,
16 And when, on the cross, he had destroyed their mutual enmity, he sought by means of his cross to reconcile them both to God, united in one body.
16 e reconciliá-los ambos com Deus, reunidos num só corpo pela virtude da cruz, aniquilando nela a inimizade.
17 He came with the good news of peace for you who were ‘far off,’ and of peace for those who were ‘near’;
17 Veio para anunciar a paz a vós que estáveis longe, e a paz também àqueles que estavam perto;
18 for it is through him that we, the Jews and the Gentiles, united in the one Spirit, are now able to approach the Father.
18 porquanto é por ele que ambos temos acesso junto ao Pai num mesmo espírito.
19 It follows, then, that you are no longer strangers and aliens, but are fellow citizens with Christ’s people and members of God’s Household.
19 Conseqüentemente, já não sois hóspedes nem peregrinos, mas sois concidadãos dos santos e membros da família de Deus,
20 You have been built up on the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being ‘the corner-stone.’
20 edificados sobre o fundamento dos apóstolos e profetas, tendo por pedra angular o próprio Cristo Jesus.
21 United in him, every part of the building, closely joined together, will grow into a Temple, consecrated by its union with the Lord.
21 É nele que todo edifício, harmonicamente disposto, se levanta até formar um templo santo no Senhor.
22 And, through union in him, you also are being built up together, to be a place where God lives through the Spirit.
22 É nele que também vós outros entrais conjuntamente, pelo Espírito, na estrutura do edifício que se torna a habitação de Deus.
