1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland districts of Roman Asia, and went to Ephesus. There he found some disciples, of whom he asked:
1 Enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo viajou pelas regiões do interior até chegar a Éfeso, no litoral, onde encontrou alguns discípulos.
2 “Did you, when you became believers in Christ, receive the Holy Spirit?” “No,” they answered, “we did not even hear that there was a Holy Spirit.”
2 Ele lhes perguntou: “Vocês receberam o Espírito Santo quando creram?”. “Não”, responderam eles. “Nem sequer ouvimos que existe o Espírito Santo.”
3 “What then was your baptism?” Paul asked.
3 “Então que batismo vocês receberam?”, perguntou ele. “O batismo de João”, responderam.
4 “John’s baptism was a baptism on repentance,” rejoined Paul, “and John told the people (speaking of the ‘one coming; after him) that they should believe in him — that is in Jesus.”
4 Paulo disse: “João batizava com o batismo de arrependimento, dizendo ao povo que cresse naquele que viria depois, isto é, em Jesus”.
5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the faith of the Lord Jesus,
5 Assim que ouviram isso, foram batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus.
6 and, after Paul had placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit descended on them, and they began to speak with ‘tongues’ and to preach.
6 Paulo lhes impôs as mãos e o Espírito Santo veio sobre eles, e falaram em línguas e profetizaram.
7 There were about twelve of them in all.
7 Eram ao todo uns doze homens.
8 Paul went to the synagogue there, and for three months spoke out fearlessly, giving addresses and trying to convince his hearers, about the kingdom of God.
8 Em seguida, Paulo foi à sinagoga e ali pregou corajosamente durante três meses, argumentando de modo convincente sobre o reino de Deus.
9 Some of them, however, hardened their hears and refused to believe, denouncing the cause before the people. So Paul left them and withdrew his disciples, and gave daily addresses in the lecture-hall of Tyrannus.
9 Mas alguns deles se mostraram endurecidos, rejeitaram a mensagem e falaram publicamente contra o Caminho. Paulo, então, deixou a sinagoga e levou consigo os discípulos, passando a realizar discussões diárias na escola de Tirano.
10 This went on for two years, so that all who lived in Roman Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the Lord’s message.
10 Isso continuou durante os dois anos seguintes, e gente de toda a província da Ásia, tanto judeus como gregos, ouviu a palavra do Senhor.
11 God did miracles of no ordinary kind by Paul’s hands;
11 Deus concedeu a Paulo o poder de realizar milagres extraordinários.
12 so that people would carry home to the sick handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his body, and their diseases would leave them and the wicked spirits go out of them.
12 Quando lenços ou aventais usados por ele eram colocados sobre enfermos, estes eram curados de suas doenças e deles saíam espíritos malignos.
13 An attempt was made by some itinerant Jews, who were exorcists, to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had wicked spirits in them. “I order you,” they would say, “by the Jesus, whom Paul preaches.”
13 Alguns judeus viajavam pelas cidades expulsando espíritos malignos. Tentavam usar o nome do Senhor Jesus, dizendo: “Ordeno que saia em nome de Jesus, a quem Paulo anuncia!”.
14 The seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this;
14 Os homens que faziam isso eram os sete filhos de Ceva, um dos principais sacerdotes.
15 but the wicked spirit answered them: “Jesus I acknowledge, and Paul I know, but you — who are you?”
15 Certa ocasião, o espírito maligno respondeu: “Eu conheço Jesus e conheço Paulo, mas quem são vocês?”.
16 Then the man, in whom this wicked spirit was, sprang on them, mastered both of them, and so completely overpowered them, that they fled out of the house, stripped of their clothes, and wounded.
16 O homem possuído pelo espírito maligno saltou em cima deles e os atacou com tanta violência que fugiram da casa, despidos e feridos.
17 This incident came to the knowledge of all the Jews and Greeks living at Ephesus; they were all awe-struck, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in the highest honor.
17 A notícia do ocorrido se espalhou rapidamente por toda a cidade de Éfeso, tanto entre judeus como entre gregos, e sobre eles veio um temor reverente, e o nome do Senhor Jesus era engrandecido.
18 Many, too, of those who had become believers in Christ came with a full confession of their practices;
18 Muitos dos que creram confessaram suas obras pecaminosas.
19 while a number of people, who had practiced magic, collected their books and burnt them publicly; and on reckoning up the price of these, they found it amounted to fifty thousand silver coins.
19 Vários deles, que haviam praticado feitiçaria, trouxeram seus livros de encantamentos e os queimaram publicamente. O valor dos livros totalizou cinquenta mil moedas de prata.
20 So irresistibly did the Lord’s message spread and prevail.
20 Assim, a mensagem a respeito do Senhor se espalhou amplamente e teve efeito poderoso.
21 Sometime after these events Paul resolved to go through Macedonia and Greece, and then make his way to Jerusalem. “And after I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
21 Depois disso, Paulo se sentiu impelido pelo Espírito a passar pela Macedônia e a Acaia antes de ir a Jerusalém. “E, de lá, devo prosseguir para Roma!”, disse ele.
22 So he sent to Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, while he himself stayed for some time longer in Roman Asia.
22 Então, enviou adiante dele à Macedônia dois assistentes, Timóteo e Erasto, e permaneceu um pouco mais na província da Ásia.
23 Just about that time a great disturbance arose about the cause.
23 Por essa época, houve enorme tumulto em Éfeso por causa do Caminho.
24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver models of the shrine of Artemis, and so gave a great deal of work to the artisans,
24 Começou com Demétrio, ourives que fabricava modelos de prata do templo da deusa grega Ártemis e que empregava muitos artífices.
25 got these men together, as well as the workmen engaged in similar occupations, and said: “Men, you know that our prosperity depends on this work,
25 Ele os reuniu a outros que trabalhavam em ofícios semelhantes e disse: “Senhores, vocês sabem que nossa prosperidade vem deste empreendimento.
26 and you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but in almost the whole of Roman Asia, this Paul has convinced and won over great numbers of people, by his assertion that those Gods which are made by hands are not Gods at all.
26 Mas, como vocês viram e ouviram, esse sujeito, Paulo, convenceu muita gente de que deuses feitos por mãos humanas não são deuses de verdade. Fez isso não apenas aqui em Éfeso, mas em toda a província.
27 So that not only is this business of ours likely to fall into discredit, but there is the further danger that the Temple of the great Goddess Artemis will be thought nothing of, and that she herself will be deprived of her splendor — though all Roman Asia and the whole world worship her.”
27 Claro que não me refiro apenas à perda do respeito público por nossa atividade. Também me preocupa que o templo da grande deusa Ártemis perca sua influência e que esta deusa magnífica, adorada em toda a província da Ásia e ao redor do mundo, seja destituída de seu grande prestígio!”.
28 When they heard this, the men were greatly enraged, and began shouting — “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
28 Ao ouvir isso, ficaram furiosos e começaram a gritar: “Grande é Ártemis dos efésios!”.
29 The commotion spread through the whole city, and the people rushed together into the amphitheater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.
29 Em pouco tempo, a cidade toda estava uma confusão. O povo correu para o anfiteatro, arrastando os macedônios Gaio e Aristarco, companheiros de viagem de Paulo.
30 Paul wished to go into the amphitheater and face the people, but the disciples would not let him,
30 Ele também quis entrar, mas os discípulos não permitiram.
31 while some of the chief religious officials of the province, who were friendly to him, sent repeated entreaties to him not to trust himself inside.
31 Alguns amigos de Paulo, oficiais da província, também lhe enviaram um recado no qual suplicaram que não arriscasse a vida entrando no anfiteatro.
32 Meanwhile some were shouting one thing and some another, for the Assembly was all in confusion, most of those present not even knowing why they had met.
32 Lá dentro, em polvorosa, o povo todo gritava, e cada um dizia uma coisa. Na verdade, a maioria nem sabia por que estava ali.
33 But some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom several of the Jewish leaders had pushed to the front, and he waved his hand to show that he wanted to speak in their defense to the people.
33 Entre a multidão, os judeus empurraram Alexandre para a frente e ordenaram que explicasse a situação. Ele fez sinal pedindo silêncio e tentou falar.
34 However, when they recognized him as a Jew, one cry broke from them all, and they continued shouting for two hours — “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
34 No entanto, quando a multidão percebeu que ele era judeu, começou a gritar novamente e continuou por cerca de duas horas: “Grande é Ártemis dos efésios!”.
35 When the Recorder had succeeded in quieting the crowd, he said: “People of Ephesus, who is there, I ask you, who needs to be told that this city of Ephesus is the Warden of the Temple of the great Artemis, and of the statue which fell down from Zeus?
35 Por fim, o escrivão da cidade conseguiu acalmar a multidão e disse: “Cidadãos de Éfeso, todos sabem que Éfeso é a guardiã do templo da grande Ártemis, cuja imagem caiu do céu para nós.
36 As these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and do nothing rash;
36 Portanto, sendo este um fato inegável, acalmem-se e não façam nada precipitadamente.
37 for you have brought these men here, though they are neither robbers of Temples nor blasphemers of our Goddess.
37 Vocês trouxeram estes homens aqui, mas eles não roubaram nada do templo nem disseram coisa alguma contra nossa deusa.
38 If, however, Demetrius and the artisans who are acting with him have a charge to make against anyone, there are court days and there are Magistrates; let both parties take legal proceedings.
38 “Se Demétrio e seus artífices têm alguma queixa contra eles, os tribunais estão abertos e há oficiais disponíveis para ouvir o caso. Que façam acusações formais.
39 But if you want anything more, it will have to be settled in the regular Assembly.
39 E, se há outras queixas que desejam apresentar, elas podem ser resolvidas em assembleia, conforme a lei.
40 For I tell you that we are in danger of being proceeded against for today’s riot, there being nothing to account for it; and in that case we will be at a loss to give any reason for this disorderly gathering.”
40 Corremos o perigo de ser acusados de provocar desordem, pois não há motivo para este tumulto. E, se exigirem de nós uma explicação, não teremos o que dizer”.
41 With these words he dismissed the Assembly.
41 Então os despediu, e a multidão se dispersou.
