1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland districts of Roman Asia, and went to Ephesus. There he found some disciples, of whom he asked:
1 Enquanto Apolo estava na cidade de Corinto, Paulo viajou pelo interior da província da Ásia e chegou a Éfeso. Ali encontrou alguns cristãos
2 “Did you, when you became believers in Christ, receive the Holy Spirit?” “No,” they answered, “we did not even hear that there was a Holy Spirit.”
2 e perguntou: — Quando vocês creram, vocês receberam o Espírito Santo? Eles responderam: — Nós nem mesmo sabíamos que existe o Espírito Santo.
3 “What then was your baptism?” Paul asked.
3 — Então que tipo de batismo vocês receberam? — perguntou Paulo. — O batismo de João Batista! — responderam.
4 “John’s baptism was a baptism on repentance,” rejoined Paul, “and John told the people (speaking of the ‘one coming; after him) that they should believe in him — that is in Jesus.”
4 Então Paulo disse: — João batizava aqueles que se arrependiam dos seus pecados. E também dizia ao povo de Israel que eles deviam crer naquele que havia de vir depois dele, isto é, em Jesus.
5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the faith of the Lord Jesus,
5 Depois de ouvirem isso, aqueles homens foram batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus.
6 and, after Paul had placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit descended on them, and they began to speak with ‘tongues’ and to preach.
6 Aí Paulo pôs as mãos sobre eles, e o Espírito Santo veio sobre eles. Então começaram a falar em línguas estranhas e a anunciar também a mensagem de Deus.
7 There were about twelve of them in all.
7 Esses homens eram mais ou menos doze.
8 Paul went to the synagogue there, and for three months spoke out fearlessly, giving addresses and trying to convince his hearers, about the kingdom of God.
8 Durante três meses Paulo foi à sinagoga e falou com coragem ao povo. Ele conversava com eles e tentava convencê-los a respeito do Reino de Deus .
9 Some of them, however, hardened their hears and refused to believe, denouncing the cause before the people. So Paul left them and withdrew his disciples, and gave daily addresses in the lecture-hall of Tyrannus.
9 Mas alguns eram teimosos, não acreditavam e, em frente de todos, ainda falavam mal do Caminho do Senhor . Então Paulo abandonou a sinagoga, levando os cristãos consigo, e começou a falar diariamente na escola de um homem chamado Tirano.
10 This went on for two years, so that all who lived in Roman Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the Lord’s message.
10 Ele fez isso durante dois anos, até que todos os moradores da província da Ásia, tanto os judeus como os não judeus, ouviram a mensagem do Senhor.
11 God did miracles of no ordinary kind by Paul’s hands;
11 Deus fazia milagres extraordinários por meio de Paulo,
12 so that people would carry home to the sick handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his body, and their diseases would leave them and the wicked spirits go out of them.
12 tanto que as pessoas pegavam lenços e aventais que ele usava e os levavam para os doentes tocarem. E, quando estes tocavam neles, ficavam curados; e de outras pessoas saíam os espíritos maus.
13 An attempt was made by some itinerant Jews, who were exorcists, to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had wicked spirits in them. “I order you,” they would say, “by the Jesus, whom Paul preaches.”
13 Alguns judeus que andavam de um lugar para outro, expulsando espíritos maus, quiseram usar também o nome do Senhor Jesus para expulsar os espíritos maus, dizendo a eles: — Pelo poder do nome de Jesus, o mesmo que Paulo anuncia, eu mando que vocês saiam!
14 The seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this;
14 Os homens que faziam isso eram os sete filhos de um judeu chamado Ceva, que era Grande Sacerdote .
15 but the wicked spirit answered them: “Jesus I acknowledge, and Paul I know, but you — who are you?”
15 Mas certa vez um espírito mau disse a eles: — Eu conheço Jesus e sei quem é Paulo. Mas vocês, quem são?
16 Then the man, in whom this wicked spirit was, sprang on them, mastered both of them, and so completely overpowered them, that they fled out of the house, stripped of their clothes, and wounded.
16 Então o homem que estava dominado pelo espírito mau os atacou e bateu neles com tanta violência, que eles fugiram daquela casa feridos e com as roupas rasgadas.
17 This incident came to the knowledge of all the Jews and Greeks living at Ephesus; they were all awe-struck, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in the highest honor.
17 E todos os que moravam em Éfeso, judeus e não judeus, souberam disso. Eles ficaram com muito medo, e o nome do Senhor Jesus se tornou mais respeitado ainda.
18 Many, too, of those who had become believers in Christ came with a full confession of their practices;
18 Então muitos dos que creram vinham e confessavam publicamente as coisas más que haviam feito.
19 while a number of people, who had practiced magic, collected their books and burnt them publicly; and on reckoning up the price of these, they found it amounted to fifty thousand silver coins.
19 E muitos daqueles que praticavam feitiçaria ajuntaram os seus livros e os trouxeram para queimar diante de todos. Quando calcularam o preço dos livros queimados, o total chegou a cinquenta mil moedas de prata .
20 So irresistibly did the Lord’s message spread and prevail.
20 Assim, de maneira poderosa, a mensagem do Senhor era anunciada e se espalhava cada vez mais.
21 Sometime after these events Paul resolved to go through Macedonia and Greece, and then make his way to Jerusalem. “And after I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
21 Depois desses acontecimentos, Paulo resolveu passar pelas províncias da Macedônia e da Acaia e ir até Jerusalém. Ele dizia: — Depois que eu visitar Jerusalém, preciso ir a Roma.
22 So he sent to Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, while he himself stayed for some time longer in Roman Asia.
22 Então Paulo enviou para a Macedônia dois dos seus ajudantes, Timóteo e Erasto, mas ele ficou mais algum tempo na província da Ásia.
23 Just about that time a great disturbance arose about the cause.
23 Foi nessa ocasião que houve na cidade de Éfeso uma grande desordem por causa do Caminho do Senhor .
24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver models of the shrine of Artemis, and so gave a great deal of work to the artisans,
24 Um ourives chamado Demétrio fazia pequenos modelos de prata do templo da deusa Diana, e o seu negócio dava muito lucro aos que trabalhavam com ele.
25 got these men together, as well as the workmen engaged in similar occupations, and said: “Men, you know that our prosperity depends on this work,
25 Então ele chamou estes e outros da mesma profissão e disse: — Meus amigos, vocês sabem que a nossa riqueza vem deste nosso ofício.
26 and you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but in almost the whole of Roman Asia, this Paul has convinced and won over great numbers of people, by his assertion that those Gods which are made by hands are not Gods at all.
26 Vocês mesmos podem ver e ouvir o que esse tal de Paulo está fazendo. Ele afirma que os deuses feitos por mãos humanas não são deuses de verdade. E está conseguindo convencer muita gente, tanto daqui como de quase toda a província da Ásia.
27 So that not only is this business of ours likely to fall into discredit, but there is the further danger that the Temple of the great Goddess Artemis will be thought nothing of, and that she herself will be deprived of her splendor — though all Roman Asia and the whole world worship her.”
27 Assim nós estamos correndo o perigo de ver o povo rejeitar o nosso negócio. E não é só isso. Existe o perigo de o templo da grande deusa Diana não ficar valendo mais nada e também de ser destruída a grandeza dessa deusa adorada por todos na Ásia e no mundo inteiro.
28 When they heard this, the men were greatly enraged, and began shouting — “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
28 Quando a multidão ouviu isso, ficou furiosa e começou a gritar: — Viva a grande Diana de Éfeso!
29 The commotion spread through the whole city, and the people rushed together into the amphitheater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.
29 E a confusão se espalhou por toda a cidade. A multidão agarrou Gaio e Aristarco, dois macedônios que viajavam com Paulo, e os arrastou até o teatro.
30 Paul wished to go into the amphitheater and face the people, but the disciples would not let him,
30 Paulo queria falar ao povo, mas os irmãos não deixaram.
31 while some of the chief religious officials of the province, who were friendly to him, sent repeated entreaties to him not to trust himself inside.
31 Alguns altos funcionários daquela província, que eram amigos de Paulo, mandaram a ele um recado, pedindo que não fosse ao teatro.
32 Meanwhile some were shouting one thing and some another, for the Assembly was all in confusion, most of those present not even knowing why they had met.
32 Naquela altura dos acontecimentos a multidão que se achava no teatro estava em completa desordem: uns gritavam uma coisa, e outros gritavam outra, pois a maioria nem sabia por que estava ali.
33 But some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom several of the Jewish leaders had pushed to the front, and he waved his hand to show that he wanted to speak in their defense to the people.
33 Algumas pessoas ficaram pensando que Alexandre era o culpado, pois os judeus o obrigaram a ir e ficar lá na frente. Aí Alexandre fez um sinal com a mão e tentou falar para se defender diante do povo.
34 However, when they recognized him as a Jew, one cry broke from them all, and they continued shouting for two hours — “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
34 Mas, quando perceberam que ele era judeu, ficaram gritando todos juntos a mesma coisa durante duas horas: — Viva a grande Diana de Éfeso!
35 When the Recorder had succeeded in quieting the crowd, he said: “People of Ephesus, who is there, I ask you, who needs to be told that this city of Ephesus is the Warden of the Temple of the great Artemis, and of the statue which fell down from Zeus?
35 Finalmente o secretário da prefeitura da cidade conseguiu acalmar o povo. Ele disse o seguinte: — Cidadãos de Éfeso! Todos sabem que a nossa cidade é a guardadora do templo da grande Diana e da pedra sagrada que caiu do céu.
36 As these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and do nothing rash;
36 Ninguém pode negar isso. Assim fiquem calmos e não façam nada sem pensar bem.
37 for you have brought these men here, though they are neither robbers of Temples nor blasphemers of our Goddess.
37 Vocês trouxeram aqui estes homens, mas eles não assaltaram o templo, nem ofenderam a nossa deusa.
38 If, however, Demetrius and the artisans who are acting with him have a charge to make against anyone, there are court days and there are Magistrates; let both parties take legal proceedings.
38 Se Demétrio e os seus ajudantes têm alguma acusação contra alguém, eles podem apresentar suas acusações no tribunal, pois para isso há dias certos de reunião, e também existem os governadores.
39 But if you want anything more, it will have to be settled in the regular Assembly.
39 Porém, se vocês querem mais alguma coisa, isso será tratado na reunião do povo, convocada de acordo com a lei .
40 For I tell you that we are in danger of being proceeded against for today’s riot, there being nothing to account for it; and in that case we will be at a loss to give any reason for this disorderly gathering.”
40 Pois corremos o risco de sermos acusados de revolta, por causa do que está acontecendo hoje. Não há motivo para toda esta confusão. E nós não poderíamos justificar tudo isso.
41 With these words he dismissed the Assembly.
41 Depois de dizer essas palavras, ele terminou a reunião.
