1 And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
1 Certo dia, o Senhor Deus disse a Jonas, filho de Amitai:
2 “Get up! Go to the great city Nineveh and cry out against her, because their evil has come up ⌞before me⌟.”
2 — Apronte-se, vá à grande cidade de Nínive e grite contra ela, porque a maldade daquela gente chegou aos meus ouvidos.
3 But Jonah set out to flee toward Tarshish from ⌞the presence of⌟ Yahweh. And he went down to Joppa and found a merchant ship going to Tarshish, and paid her fare, and went on board her to go with them toward Tarshish from ⌞the presence of⌟ Yahweh.
3 Jonas se aprontou, mas fugiu do Senhor , indo na direção contrária. Ele desceu a Jope e ali encontrou um navio que estava de saída para a Espanha. Pagou a passagem e embarcou a fim de viajar com os marinheiros para a Espanha, para longe do Senhor .
4 And Yahweh hurled a great wind upon the sea, and it was a great storm on the sea, and the merchant ship ⌞was in danger of breaking up⌟.
4 No entanto, Deus mandou um forte vento, e houve uma tempestade no mar. Era tão violenta, que o navio estava em perigo de se partir ao meio.
5 And the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they threw the ⌞contents⌟ that were in the merchant ship into the sea to lighten it for them. And meanwhile Jonah went down into the hold of the vessel and lay down and fell asleep.
5 Os marinheiros ficaram com muito medo e gritavam por socorro, cada um ao seu deus. E, para que o navio ficasse mais leve, jogaram a carga no mar. Porém Jonas tinha descido ao porão e ali havia se deitado e caído num sono profundo.
6 And the captain of the ship approached him and said to him, “Why are you ⌞sound asleep⌟? Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps your god will take notice of us and we won’t perish!”
6 O capitão do navio o encontrou ali e disse: — Como é que você está aí dormindo? Levante-se e peça socorro ao seu deus. Pode ser que ele tenha pena de nós e não deixe a gente morrer.
7 And they said ⌞to one another⌟, “Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this disaster has come on us!” And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
7 Os marinheiros disseram uns aos outros: — Vamos tirar a sorte para descobrir quem é o culpado de estarmos neste perigo. Eles fizeram isso, e o nome de Jonas foi sorteado.
8 So they said to him, “Please tell us whoever is responsible that this disaster has come upon us! What is your occupation? And from where do you come? What is your country? And from which people are you?”
8 Então lhe perguntaram: — Agora diga: quem é o culpado de tudo isso? O que você está fazendo aqui? De onde você vem? De que país você é, e qual é o seu povo?
9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
9 — Eu sou hebreu — respondeu Jonas — e adoro o Senhor , o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra.
10 Then the men ⌞were greatly afraid⌟, and they said to him, “What is this you have done?” because they knew that he was fleeing ⌞from the presence of⌟ Yahweh (because he had told them).
10 Em seguida, Jonas contou que estava fugindo de Deus, o Senhor . Aí os marinheiros ficaram mais apavorados ainda e disseram: — Veja só o que você fez!
11 So they said to him, “What shall we do to you so that the sea may quiet down for us?” because the sea ⌞was growing more and more tempestuous⌟.
11 A tempestade piorava cada vez mais, de modo que os marinheiros perguntaram a Jonas: — Que devemos fazer com você para que o mar se acalme?
12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea so that the sea may quiet down for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you all.”
12 Jonas respondeu: — Vocês me peguem e joguem no mar, que ele ficará calmo. Pois eu sei que foi por minha culpa que esta terrível tempestade caiu sobre vocês.
13 But the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to the dry land, and they could not do so because the sea ⌞was growing more and more tempestuous⌟ against them.
13 Em vez de fazerem isso, os marinheiros começaram a remar com toda a força, tentando levar o navio para a praia; porém não conseguiam nada porque a tempestade piorava ainda mais.
14 So they cried out to Yahweh, and they said, “O Yahweh! Please do not let us perish because of this man’s life, and ⌞do not make us guilty of innocent blood⌟, because you, O Yahweh, did what you wanted.”
14 Então oraram bem alto, assim: — Ó
15 And they picked Jonah up and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.
15 Em seguida, os marinheiros pegaram Jonas e o jogaram no mar, e logo o mar se acalmou.
16 So the men feared Yahweh ⌞greatly⌟, and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and ⌞made⌟ vows.
16 Eles ficaram com tanto medo do Senhor , que lhe ofereceram um sacrifício e lhe fizeram promessas.
17 And Yahweh provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
17 O Senhor ordenou que um grande peixe engolisse Jonas. E ele ficou dentro do peixe três dias e três noites.
