1 And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
1 Ora, a Palavra do SENHOR veio a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo:
2 “Get up! Go to the great city Nineveh and cry out against her, because their evil has come up ⌞before me⌟.”
2 Levanta-te, vai à Nínive, aquela grande cidade, e clama contra ela, pois a sua maldade subiu diante de mim.
3 But Jonah set out to flee toward Tarshish from ⌞the presence of⌟ Yahweh. And he went down to Joppa and found a merchant ship going to Tarshish, and paid her fare, and went on board her to go with them toward Tarshish from ⌞the presence of⌟ Yahweh.
3 Mas Jonas se levantou para fugir para Társis, longe da presença do SENHOR, e desceu a Jope, onde encontrou um navio que ia para Társis; pagou, pois, a sua passagem, e desceu para dentro dele, para ir com eles para Társis, longe da presença do SENHOR.
4 And Yahweh hurled a great wind upon the sea, and it was a great storm on the sea, and the merchant ship ⌞was in danger of breaking up⌟.
4 Mas o SENHOR enviou um grande vento ao mar, e houve uma poderosa tempestade no mar, de modo que o navio estava a ponto de quebrar-se.
5 And the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they threw the ⌞contents⌟ that were in the merchant ship into the sea to lighten it for them. And meanwhile Jonah went down into the hold of the vessel and lay down and fell asleep.
5 Então os marinheiros ficaram com medo, e cada homem clamou ao seu deus, e lançaram as cargas que estavam no navio ao mar, para o aliviarem. Mas Jonas desceu ao porão do navio, e deitado, dormiu profundamente.
6 And the captain of the ship approached him and said to him, “Why are you ⌞sound asleep⌟? Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps your god will take notice of us and we won’t perish!”
6 E o mestre do navio dirigiu-se a ele, e disse-lhe: que tens, ó dorminhoco? Levanta-te, clama ao teu Deus, talvez assim, Deus pensará em nós, para que não pereçamos.
7 And they said ⌞to one another⌟, “Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this disaster has come on us!” And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
7 E disseram cada um ao seu companheiro: vinde, e lancemos sorte, para que saibamos por que causa esse mal está sobre nós. Assim eles lançaram sorte, e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas.
8 So they said to him, “Please tell us whoever is responsible that this disaster has come upon us! What is your occupation? And from where do you come? What is your country? And from which people are you?”
8 Então eles lhe disseram: diga-nos, lhe pedimos, por causa de quem este mal está sobre nós? Qual é a tua ocupação? De onde vens? Qual é a tua terra? E de que povo és tu?
9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
9 E ele lhes disse: eu sou hebreu, e temo ao SENHOR, o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra seca.
10 Then the men ⌞were greatly afraid⌟, and they said to him, “What is this you have done?” because they knew that he was fleeing ⌞from the presence of⌟ Yahweh (because he had told them).
10 Então os homens se encheram de medo, e disseram-lhe: por que tu fizeste isto? Pois os homens sabiam que ele fugia da presença do SENHOR, porque ele lhes tinha dito.
11 So they said to him, “What shall we do to you so that the sea may quiet down for us?” because the sea ⌞was growing more and more tempestuous⌟.
11 Então disseram-lhe: o que devemos fazer contigo, para que o mar se acalme para nós? Pois o mar estava agitado e tempestuoso.
12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea so that the sea may quiet down for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you all.”
12 E ele lhes disse: levantai-me, e lançai-me ao mar, para que ele se acalme; pois eu sei que é por minha causa que esta grande tempestade está sobre vós.
13 But the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to the dry land, and they could not do so because the sea ⌞was growing more and more tempestuous⌟ against them.
13 Entretanto, os homens remaram forte, para trazer o navio à terra, mas eles não conseguiram, pois o mar estava agitado e tempestuoso contra eles.
14 So they cried out to Yahweh, and they said, “O Yahweh! Please do not let us perish because of this man’s life, and ⌞do not make us guilty of innocent blood⌟, because you, O Yahweh, did what you wanted.”
14 Por isso eles clamaram ao SENHOR, e disseram: nós te rogamos, ó SENHOR! Nós te rogamos, que não nos deixe perecer por causa da vida deste homem, e que não ponha sobre nós sangue inocente; pois tu, ó SENHOR, fizeste o que desejavas.
15 And they picked Jonah up and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.
15 Então eles tomaram Jonas, e o lançaram ao mar, e cessou o mar da sua fúria.
16 So the men feared Yahweh ⌞greatly⌟, and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and ⌞made⌟ vows.
16 Então os homens temeram muito ao SENHOR, ofereceram sacrifício ao SENHOR e fizeram votos.
17 And Yahweh provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
17 Mas o SENHOR havia preparado um grande peixe, para que engolisse Jonas. E ele esteve no ventre do peixe três dias e três noites.
