1 ARE you unacquainted, brethren, (for I am speaking to those who know the law,) that the law exercises dominion over a person for as long time as he liveth?
1 Agora, irmãos, vocês que conhecem a lei, não sabem que ela se aplica apenas enquanto a pessoa vive?
2 For the woman who is subject to a husband, is bound by the law to that husband during his life; but if the husband be dead, she is discharged from that husband.
2 Por exemplo, quando uma mulher se casa, a lei a une a seu marido enquanto ele estiver vivo. No entanto, se ele morrer, as leis do casamento já não se aplicarão à mulher.
3 She shall therefore certainly be counted an adulteress, if, her husband being alive, she be for another man: but if her husband is dead, she is free from the law; so that she shall be no adulteress, though married to another husband.
3 Portanto, enquanto o marido estiver vivo, se ela se casar com outro homem, cometerá adultério. Mas, se o marido morrer, ela ficará livre dessa lei e não cometerá adultério ao se casar novamente.
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye might be for another, who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit for God.
4 Assim, meus irmãos, vocês morreram para o poder da lei quando morreram com Cristo, e agora estão unidos com aquele que foi ressuscitado dos mortos. Como resultado, podemos produzir uma colheita de boas obras para Deus.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions excited by the law, wrought powerfully in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death.
5 Quando éramos controlados pela natureza humana, desejos pecaminosos atuavam dentro de nós, e a lei despertava esses desejos maus, que produziam uma colheita de obras pecaminosas cujo resultado era a morte.
6 But now we have been discharged from the law, that being dead by which we were held fast; that we should serve in renovation of spirit, and not in the antiquity of the letter.
6 Agora, porém, fomos libertos da lei, pois morremos para ela e já não estamos presos a seu poder. Podemos servir a Deus não da maneira antiga, obedecendo à letra da lei, mas da maneira nova, vivendo no Espírito.
7 What then shall we say? Is the law sin? God forbid. Yea, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not even known concupiscence, unless the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
7 Por acaso estou dizendo que a lei de Deus é pecaminosa? Claro que não! Na verdade, foi a lei que me mostrou meu pecado. Eu jamais saberia que cobiçar é errado se a lei não dissesse: “Não cobice”.
8 But sin, seizing the opportunity by the law, wrought in me all concupiscence. For without the law sin is dead.
8 Mas o pecado usou esse mandamento para despertar dentro de mim todo tipo de desejo cobiçoso. Se não houvesse lei, o pecado não teria esse poder.
9 For though I lived without the law formerly; yet when the commandment came, sin revived, but I died.
9 Houve um tempo em que eu vivia sem a lei. No entanto, quando tomei conhecimento do mandamento, o pecado ganhou vida,
10 And the commandment, which was for life, the same was found by me for death.
10 e eu morri. Assim, descobri que os mandamentos da lei, que deveriam trazer vida, trouxeram, em vez disso, morte.
11 For sin, seizing the occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and thereby slew me.
11 O pecado se aproveitou desses mandamentos e me enganou, e fez uso deles para me matar.
12 So then the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
12 Isso, porém, só demonstra que a lei em si é santa, e santos, justos e bons são seus mandamentos.
13 Did then that which is good become fatal to me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin by that which was good in itself, was the cause of death to me; that sin through the commandment might become transcendantly sinful.
13 Mas, então, a lei, que é boa, foi responsável por minha morte? Claro que não! O pecado usou o que era bom para me condenar à morte. Vemos, com isso, como o pecado é terrível, usando os bons mandamentos de Deus para seus próprios fins perversos.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am fleshly, sold under sin.
14 O problema não está na lei, pois ela é espiritual e boa. O problema está em mim, pois sou humano, escravo do pecado.
15 For that which I am doing I approve not: for not the thing which I wish, that do I practise; but the very thing I hate, that I do.
15 Não entendo a mim mesmo, pois quero fazer o que é certo, mas não o faço. Em vez disso, faço aquilo que odeio.
16 But if what I would not, that I do, I concur with the law that it is excellent.
16 Mas, se eu sei que o que faço é errado, isso mostra que concordo que a lei é boa.
17 Now then no more I do this, but sin dwelling in me.
17 Portanto, não sou eu quem faz o que é errado, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
18 For I know that there dwelleth not in me (that is, in my flesh) any good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
18 E eu sei que em mim, isto é, em minha natureza humana, não há nada de bom, pois quero fazer o que é certo, mas não consigo.
19 For I do not the good which I wish: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
19 Quero fazer o bem, mas não o faço. Não quero fazer o que é errado, mas, ainda assim, o faço.
20 If then I do that which I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
20 Então, se faço o que não quero, na verdade não sou eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
21 I find then a law, that, when I wish to do good, evil is presented to me.
21 Assim, descobri esta lei em minha vida: quando quero fazer o que é certo, percebo que o mal está presente em mim.
22 For I am delighted with the law of God, as respecting the inward man:
22 Amo a lei de Deus de todo o coração.
23 but I see another law in my members, militating against the law in my mind, and making me captive to the law of sin which is in my members.
23 Contudo, há outra lei dentro de mim que está em guerra com minha mente e me torna escravo do pecado que permanece dentro de mim.
24 O wretched man, I! who shall pluck me from the body of this death?
24 Como sou miserável! Quem me libertará deste corpo mortal dominado pelo pecado?
25 I give thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Well then, I myself with my mind am servant to the law of God; but in my flesh to the law of sin.
25 Graças a Deus, a resposta está em Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor. Na mente, quero, de fato, obedecer à lei de Deus, mas, por causa de minha natureza humana, sou escravo do pecado.
