1 ARE you unacquainted, brethren, (for I am speaking to those who know the law,) that the law exercises dominion over a person for as long time as he liveth?
1 Meus irmãos, falo a vocês como a pessoas que conhecem a lei. Acaso vocês não sabem que a lei tem autoridade sobre alguém apenas enquanto ele vive?
2 For the woman who is subject to a husband, is bound by the law to that husband during his life; but if the husband be dead, she is discharged from that husband.
2 Por exemplo, pela lei a mulher casada está ligada a seu marido enquanto ele estiver vivo; mas, se o marido morrer, ela estará livre da lei do casamento.
3 She shall therefore certainly be counted an adulteress, if, her husband being alive, she be for another man: but if her husband is dead, she is free from the law; so that she shall be no adulteress, though married to another husband.
3 Por isso, se ela se casar com outro homem enquanto seu marido ainda estiver vivo, será considerada adúltera. Mas se o marido morrer, ela estará livre daquela lei, e mesmo que venha a se casar com outro homem, não será adúltera.
4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye might be for another, who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit for God.
4 Assim, meus irmãos, vocês também morreram para a lei, por meio do corpo de Cristo, para pertencerem a outro, àquele que ressuscitou dos mortos, a fim de que venhamos a dar fruto para Deus.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions excited by the law, wrought powerfully in our members, to bring forth fruit unto death.
5 Pois quando éramos controlados pela carne, as paixões pecaminosas despertadas pela lei atuavam em nossos corpos, de forma que dávamos fruto para a morte.
6 But now we have been discharged from the law, that being dead by which we were held fast; that we should serve in renovation of spirit, and not in the antiquity of the letter.
6 Mas agora, morrendo para aquilo que antes nos prendia, fomos libertados da lei, para que sirvamos conforme o novo modo do Espírito, e não segundo a velha forma da lei escrita.
7 What then shall we say? Is the law sin? God forbid. Yea, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not even known concupiscence, unless the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
7 Que diremos então? A lei é pecado? De maneira nenhuma! De fato, eu não saberia o que é pecado, a não ser por meio da lei. Pois, na realidade, eu não saberia o que é cobiça, se a lei não dissesse: "Não cobiçarás".
8 But sin, seizing the opportunity by the law, wrought in me all concupiscence. For without the law sin is dead.
8 Mas o pecado, aproveitando a oportunidade dada pelo mandamento, produziu em mim todo tipo de desejo cobiçoso. Pois, sem a lei, o pecado está morto.
9 For though I lived without the law formerly; yet when the commandment came, sin revived, but I died.
9 Antes, eu vivia sem a lei, mas quando o mandamento veio, o pecado reviveu, e eu morri.
10 And the commandment, which was for life, the same was found by me for death.
10 Descobri que o próprio mandamento, destinado a produzir vida, na verdade produziu morte.
11 For sin, seizing the occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and thereby slew me.
11 Pois o pecado, aproveitando a oportunidade dada pelo mandamento, enganou-me e por meio do mandamento me matou.
12 So then the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
12 De fato a lei é santa, e o mandamento é santo, justo e bom.
13 Did then that which is good become fatal to me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin by that which was good in itself, was the cause of death to me; that sin through the commandment might become transcendantly sinful.
13 E então, o que é bom se tornou em morte para mim? De maneira nenhuma! Mas, para que o pecado se mostrasse como pecado, ele produziu morte em mim por meio do que era bom, de modo que por meio do mandamento ele se mostrasse extremamente pecaminoso.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am fleshly, sold under sin.
14 Sabemos que a lei é espiritual; eu, contudo, não o sou, pois fui vendido como escravo ao pecado.
15 For that which I am doing I approve not: for not the thing which I wish, that do I practise; but the very thing I hate, that I do.
15 Não entendo o que faço. Pois não faço o que desejo, mas o que odeio.
16 But if what I would not, that I do, I concur with the law that it is excellent.
16 E, se faço o que não desejo, admito que a lei é boa.
17 Now then no more I do this, but sin dwelling in me.
17 Neste caso, não sou mais eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
18 For I know that there dwelleth not in me (that is, in my flesh) any good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
18 Sei que nada de bom habita em mim, isto é, em minha carne. Porque tenho o desejo de fazer o que é bom, mas não consigo realizá-lo.
19 For I do not the good which I wish: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
19 Pois o que faço não é o bem que desejo, mas o mal que não quero fazer, esse eu continuo fazendo.
20 If then I do that which I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
20 Ora, se faço o que não quero, já não sou eu quem o faz, mas o pecado que habita em mim.
21 I find then a law, that, when I wish to do good, evil is presented to me.
21 Assim, encontro esta lei que atua em mim: Quando quero fazer o bem, o mal está junto a mim.
22 For I am delighted with the law of God, as respecting the inward man:
22 Pois, no íntimo do meu ser tenho prazer na lei de Deus;
23 but I see another law in my members, militating against the law in my mind, and making me captive to the law of sin which is in my members.
23 mas vejo outra lei atuando nos membros do meu corpo, guerreando contra a lei da minha mente, tornando-me prisioneiro da lei do pecado que atua em meus membros.
24 O wretched man, I! who shall pluck me from the body of this death?
24 Miserável homem eu que sou! Quem me libertará do corpo sujeito a esta morte?
25 I give thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Well then, I myself with my mind am servant to the law of God; but in my flesh to the law of sin.
25 Graças a Deus por Jesus Cristo, nosso Senhor! De modo que, com a mente, eu próprio sou escravo da lei de Deus; mas, com a carne, da lei do pecado.
