1 And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,
1 Caminhando, viu Jesus um cego de nascença.
2 and his disciples asked him, saying, 'Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?'
2 Os seus discípulos indagaram dele: Mestre, quem pecou, este homem ou seus pais, para que nascesse cego?
3 Jesus answered, 'Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;
3 Jesus respondeu: Nem este pecou nem seus pais, mas é necessário que nele se manifestem as obras de Deus.
4 it behooves me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night does come, when no one is able to work: --
4 Enquanto for dia, cumpre-me terminar as obras daquele que me enviou. Virá a noite, na qual já ninguém pode trabalhar.
5 when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.'
5 Por isso, enquanto estou no mundo, sou a luz do mundo.
6 These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,
6 Dito isso, cuspiu no chão, fez um pouco de lodo com a saliva e com o lodo ungiu os olhos do cego.
7 'Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,' which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing;
7 Depois lhe disse: Vai, lava-te na piscina de Siloé {esta palavra significa emissário}. O cego foi, lavou-se e voltou vendo.
8 the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, 'Is not this he who is sitting and begging?'
8 Então os vizinhos e aqueles que antes o tinham visto mendigar perguntavam: Não é este aquele que, sentado, mendigava?
9 others said -- 'This is he;' and others -- 'He is like to him;' he himself said, -- 'I am he.'
9 Respondiam alguns: É ele. Outros contestavam: De nenhum modo, é um parecido com ele. Ele, porém, dizia: Sou eu mesmo.
10 They said, therefore, to him, 'How were your eyes opened?'
10 Perguntaram-lhe, então: Como te foram abertos os olhos?
11 he answered and said, 'A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;'
11 Respondeu ele: Aquele homem que se chama Jesus fez lodo, ungiu-me os olhos e disse-me: Vai à piscina de Siloé e lava-te. Fui, lavei-me e vejo.
12 they said, therefore, to him, 'Where is that one?' he said, 'I have not known.'
12 Interrogaram-no: Onde está esse homem? Respondeu: Não o sei.
13 They bring him to the Pharisees who once was blind,
13 Levaram então o que fora cego aos fariseus.
14 and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
14 Ora, era sábado quando Jesus fez o lodo e lhe abriu os olhos.
15 Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, 'Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash -- and I see.'
15 Os fariseus indagaram dele novamente de que modo ficara vendo. Respondeu-lhes: Pôs-me lodo nos olhos, lavei-me e vejo.
16 Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, 'This man is not from God, because the sabbath he does not keep;' others said, 'How is a man -- a sinful one -- able to do such signs?' and there was a division among them.
16 Diziam alguns dos fariseus: Este homem não é o enviado de Deus, pois não guarda sábado. Outros replicavam: Como pode um pecador fazer tais prodígios? E havia desacordo entre eles.
17 They said to the blind man again, 'You -- what do you say of him -- that he opened your eyes?'
17 Perguntaram ainda ao cego: Que dizes tu daquele que te abriu os olhos? É um profeta, respondeu ele.
18 and he said -- 'He is a prophet.' The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,
18 Mas os judeus não quiseram admitir que aquele homem tivesse sido cego e que tivesse recobrado a vista, até que chamaram seus pais.
19 and they asked them, saying, 'Is your son, of whom you say that he was born blind? how then now does he see?'
19 E os interrogaram: É este o vosso filho? Afirmais que ele nasceu cego? Pois como é que agora vê?
20 His parents answered them and said, 'We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
20 Seus pais responderam: Sabemos que este é o nosso filho e que nasceu cego.
21 and how he now sees, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.'
21 Mas não sabemos como agora ficou vendo, nem quem lhe abriu os olhos. Perguntai-o a ele. Tem idade. Que ele mesmo explique.
22 These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him -- Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;
22 Seus pais disseram isso porque temiam os judeus, pois os judeus tinham ameaçado expulsar da sinagoga todo aquele que reconhecesse Jesus como o Cristo.
23 because of this his parents said -- 'He is of age, ask him.'
23 Por isso é que seus pais responderam: Ele tem idade, perguntai-lho.
24 They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, 'Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;'
24 Tornaram a chamar o homem que fora cego, dizendo-lhe: Dá glória a Deus! Nós sabemos que este homem é pecador.
25 he answered, therefore, and said, 'If he be a sinner -- I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.'
25 Disse-lhes ele: Se esse homem é pecador, não o sei... Sei apenas isto: sendo eu antes cego, agora vejo.
26 And they said to him again, 'What did he to you? how did he open your eyes?'
26 Perguntaram-lhe ainda uma vez: Que foi que ele te fez? Como te abriu os olhos?
27 He answered them, 'I told you already, and you did not hear; why again do you wish to hear? do you also wish to become his disciples?'
27 Respondeu-lhes: Eu já vo-lo disse e não me destes ouvidos. Por que quereis tornar a ouvir? Quereis vós, porventura, tornar-vos também seus discípulos?...
28 They reviled him, therefore, and said, 'You are his disciple, and we are Moses' disciples;
28 Então eles o cobriram de injúrias e lhe disseram: Tu que és discípulo dele! Nós somos discípulos de Moisés.
29 we have known that God has spoken to Moses, but this one -- we have not known whence he is.'
29 Sabemos que Deus falou a Moisés, mas deste não sabemos de onde ele é.
30 The man answered and said to them, 'Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that you have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes!
30 Respondeu aquele homem: O que é de admirar em tudo isso é que não saibais de onde ele é, e entretanto ele me abriu os olhos.
31 and we have known that God does not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He does hear;
31 Sabemos, porém, que Deus não ouve a pecadores, mas atende a quem lhe presta culto e faz a sua vontade.
32 from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who has been born blind;
32 Jamais se ouviu dizer que alguém tenha aberto os olhos a um cego de nascença.
33 if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.'
33 Se esse homem não fosse de Deus, não poderia fazer nada.
34 They answered and said to him, 'In sins you were born altogether, and you do teach us!' and they cast him forth without.
34 Responderam-lhe eles: Tu nasceste todo em pecado e nos ensinas?... E expulsaram-no.
35 Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Son of God?'
35 Jesus soube que o tinham expulsado e, havendo-o encontrado, perguntou-lhe: Crês no Filho do Homem?
36 he answered and said, 'Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?'
36 Respondeu ele: Quem é ele, Senhor, para que eu creia nele?
37 And Jesus said to him, 'You have both seen him, and he who is speaking with you is he;'
37 Disse-lhe Jesus: Tu o vês, é o mesmo que fala contigo!
38 and he said, 'I believe, sir,' and bowed before him.
38 Creio, Senhor, disse ele. E, prostrando-se, o adorou.
39 And Jesus said, 'For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.'
39 Jesus então disse: Vim a este mundo para fazer uma discriminação: os que não vêem vejam, e os que vêem se tornem cegos.
40 And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, 'Are we also blind?'
40 Alguns dos fariseus, que estavam com ele, ouviram-no e perguntaram-lhe: Também nós somos, acaso, cegos?...
41 Jesus said to them, 'If you were blind, you were not having had sin, but now you say -- We see, therefore does your sin remain.
41 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Se fôsseis cegos, não teríeis pecado, mas agora pretendeis ver, e o vosso pecado subsiste.
