1 Then did Joshua son of Nun, send out from The Acacias, two men to spy out silently, saying, Go view the land, and Jericho. So they came, and entered the house of a harlot, whose name was Rahab, and lay there.
1 Então, do acampamento em Sitim, Josué, filho de Num, enviou secretamente dois espiões, com a seguinte instrução: “Façam o reconhecimento da terra, especialmente dos arredores de Jericó”. Os dois homens partiram e chegaram à casa de uma prostituta chamada Raabe, e ali passaram a noite.
2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying,Lo! men, have come in hither to-night of the sons of Israel to search out the land.
2 A notícia chegou ao rei de Jericó: “Alguns israelitas vieram aqui esta noite para espionar a terra”.
3 So the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying,Bring forth the men that are come in unto thee who have entered thy house, for, to search out all the land, have they come.
3 Então o rei de Jericó enviou a seguinte ordem a Raabe: “Traga para fora os homens que entraram em sua casa, pois vieram espionar toda a terra”.
4 And the woman took the two men and hid them,and said: Even so, the men did come in unto me, but I knew not from whence they were;
4 Raabe havia escondido os dois homens, mas respondeu: “Sim, os homens estiveram aqui, mas eu não sabia de onde eram.
5 and it came to pass, as the gate was about to be shut in the darkness, that, the men, went out, I know not whither the men went,pursue them quickly for ye shall overtake them.
5 Foram embora da cidade ao anoitecer, quase na hora de fechar os portões. Não sei para onde foram. Se vocês os perseguirem, é provável que os alcancem”.
6 But, she, had taken them up to the roof,and concealed them with the stalks of flax which she had laid in order for herself upon the roof.
6 Na verdade, ela havia levado os homens para o terraço e os escondido debaixo dos feixes de linho que tinha posto ali.
7 So, the men, pursued them by way of the Jordan unto the fords,the gate being shut as soon as they who pursued them had gone forth.
7 Os homens do rei procuraram os espiões pelo caminho que ia até a parte rasa do Jordão, onde se podia atravessar. Assim que eles saíram, os portões de Jericó foram fechados.
8 And, ere yet they slept, she, went up unto them, upon the roof;
8 Antes que os espiões fossem dormir, Raabe foi ao terraço falar com eles.
9 and said unto the men, I know that Yahweh hath given unto you the land,and that the terror of you hath fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land, have melted away, from before you.
9 “Sei que o S enhor lhes deu esta terra”, disse ela. “Estamos todos apavorados por sua causa. Todos os habitantes desta terra estão desesperados,
10 For we have heard how Yahweh, dried up, the waters of the Red Sea from before you, when ye came forth out of Egypt,and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites who were over the Jordan unto Sihon and unto Og, whom ye devoted to destruction;
10 pois ouvimos que o S enhor secou as águas do mar Vermelho para que vocês passassem, quando saíram do Egito. E sabemos o que fizeram a leste do Jordão aos dois reis amorreus Ogue e Seom, cujos povos vocês destruíram completamente.
11 and, when we heard, then did our heart melt, and there rose up no longer any spirit in any man because of you,for, as for Yahweh your God, he, is Godin the heavens above, and upon the earth beneath.
11 Não é à toa que estamos dominados pelo medo! Ninguém tem ânimo para lutar depois de ouvir coisas como essas, pois o S enhor , seu Deus, é Deus supremo em cima no céu e embaixo na terra.
12 Now, therefore I pray you, swear unto me by Yahweh, since I have dealt with you in lovingkindness, that, ye also, will deal with the house of my father in lovingkindness, and will give me a token of faithfulness,
12 “Agora, portanto, jurem-me pelo S enhor que, assim como os tratei com bondade, vocês serão bondosos comigo e com minha família. Deem-me alguma garantia de que,
13 and will save alive my father and my mother, and my brethren and my sisters, and all that they have,and will deliver our souls from death.
13 quando Jericó for conquistada, vocês pouparão a minha vida e a vida de meu pai e minha mãe, e também a de meus irmãos e irmãs e de suas famílias.”
14 And the men said unto her, Our souls in your stead unto death, if ye utter not this our business,so shall it be, when Yahweh shall give us the land, that we will deal with thee in lovingkindness and in faithfulness.
14 Os homens responderam: “Oferecemos a própria vida como garantia de sua segurança. Se você não nos entregar, cumpriremos nossa promessa e trataremos vocês com bondade quando o S enhor nos der a terra”.
15 And she let them down with a cord through the window,for, her house, was within the wall of the rampart, and, within the rampart, she was dwelling.
15 Então Raabe os ajudou a descer pela janela por uma corda, pois sua casa fazia parte do muro da cidade.
16 And she said unto themTo the mountain, get you, lest the pursuers, fall in, with you,and hide yourselves there, three days until the pursuers return, and, afterwards, shall ye go your way.
16 “Fujam para a região montanhosa”, disse ela. “Escondam-se ali por três dias. Quando os homens que estão à sua procura tiverem voltado, vocês poderão seguir seu caminho.”
17 And the men said unto her,Free, will we be from this thine oath which thou hast made us swear:
17 Antes de partir, os homens disseram a Raabe: “Só estaremos obrigados pelo juramento que fizemos se você seguir nossas instruções.
18 Lo! when we are coming into the land, this cord of crimson thread, must thou bind in the window by which thou didst let us down, and, thy father and thy mother and thy brethren and all the household of thy father, must thou gather together unto thee unto the house.
18 Quando entrarmos na terra, deixe este cordão vermelho pendurado na janela por onde você nos ajudou a descer. Todos os membros de sua família — pai, mãe, irmãos e todos os seus parentes — devem estar dentro desta casa.
19 And it shall be, whosoever shall go forth out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood, shall be on his own head and, we, shall be free,but, whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood, shall be on our heads, if a, hand, be upon him.
19 Se saírem na rua e forem mortos, não teremos culpa. Mas, se alguém fizer mal aos que estiverem dentro desta casa, assumiremos a responsabilidade por sua morte.
20 Or, if thou utter this our business, then shall we be free from this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
20 E, se você falar a outros sobre nossa missão, estaremos livres do juramento que fizemos”.
21 And she saidAccording to your words, so, shall it be. Thus sent she them away and they departed,and she bound the crimson cord in the window.
21 “Eu aceito suas condições”, respondeu ela, e despediu-se deles, deixando o cordão vermelho pendurado na janela.
22 And they went and came into the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers had returned,so the pursuers, made search, throughout all the way, but found them not.
22 Os espiões subiram até a região montanhosa e ali ficaram por três dias. Seus perseguidores os procuraram por todo o caminho, mas não os encontraram e voltaram.
23 And the two men returned and came down out of the mountain, and crossed over and came unto Joshua, son of Nun,and recounted to him all that had befallen them;
23 Então os dois espiões desceram da região montanhosa, atravessaram o Jordão e relataram a Josué, filho de Num, tudo que lhes havia acontecido.
24 and they said unto Joshua, Yahweh, hath delivered, into our hand all the land,moreover also all the inhabitants of the land, have melted away, from before us.
24 “Certamente o S enhor nos deu toda a terra”, disseram eles. “Todos os seus habitantes estão desesperados por nossa causa.”
