1 One day Samson traveled to Timnah. He noticed a young Philistine woman.
1 E desceu Sansão a Timnate; e, vendo em Timnate uma mulher das filhas dos filisteus,
2 He went home and told his father and mother: »A Philistine woman at Timnah caught my attention. Get her for me. I want to marry her.«
2 Subiu, e declarou-o a seu pai e a sua mãe, e disse: Vi uma mulher em Timnate, das filhas dos filisteus; agora, pois, tomai-ma por mulher.
3 His father and mother asked him: »Why do you go to those heathen Philistines to get a wife? Can you not find someone in our own family or among all our people?« Samson told his father: »I like her! She is the one I want. Get her for me.«
3 Porém seu pai e sua mãe lhe disseram: Não há, porventura, mulher entre as filhas de teus irmãos, nem entre todo o meu povo, para que tu vás tomar mulher dos filisteus, daqueles incircuncisos? E disse Sansão a seu pai: Toma-me esta, porque ela agrada aos meus olhos.
4 His parents did not know Jehovah was leading Samson to do this. Jehovah was looking for an opportunity to fight the Philistines. At this time the Philistines were ruling Israel.
4 Mas seu pai e sua mãe não sabiam que isto vinha do Senhor; pois buscava ocasião contra os filisteus; porquanto naquele tempo os filisteus dominavam sobre Israel.
5 Samson went to Timnah with his father and mother. When they traveled through the vineyards he heard a young lion roaring.
5 Desceu, pois, Sansão com seu pai e com sua mãe a Timnate; e, chegando às vinhas de Timnate eis que um filho de leão, rugindo, lhe saiu ao encontro.
6 Suddenly the power of Jehovah made Samson strong. He tore the lion apart with his bare hands, as if it were a young goat. But he did not tell his parents what he had done.
6 Então o Espírito do Senhor se apossou dele tão poderosamente que despedaçou o leão, como quem despedaça um cabrito, sem ter nada na sua mão; porém nem a seu pai nem a sua mãe deu a saber o que tinha feito.
7 Then he went and talked to the young woman. He wanted her.
7 E desceu, e falou àquela mulher, e ela agradou aos olhos de Sansão.
8 A few days later Samson returned to marry her. On the way he left the road to look at the lion he had killed. He found a swarm of bees and some honey inside the dead body.
8 E depois de alguns dias voltou ele para tomá-la; e, apartando-se do caminho para ver o corpo do leão morto, eis que nele havia um enxame de abelhas com mel.
9 He scraped the honey out into his hands and ate it as he walked along. Then he went to his father and mother and gave them some. They ate it, but Samson did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the dead body of a lion.
9 E tomou-o nas suas mãos, e foi andando e comendo dele; e foi a seu pai e a sua mãe, e deu-lhes do mel, e comeram; porém não lhes deu a saber que tomara o mel do corpo do leão.
10 Samsons father went to the womans house. Samson gave a banquet there. This was a custom among the young men.
10 Descendo, pois, seu pai àquela mulher, fez Sansão ali um banquete; porque assim os moços costumavam fazer.
11 The Philistines saw him. They sent thirty companions to stay with him.
11 E sucedeu que, como o vissem, trouxeram trinta companheiros para estarem com ele.
12 Samson said to them: »Let me tell you a riddle. If you can tell me the meaning before the seven days of the wedding feast are over, I will give each of you a piece of fine linen and a change of fine clothes.« »Tell us your riddle,« they said: »Let us hear it.«
12 Disse-lhes, pois, Sansão: Eu vos darei um enigma para decifrar; e, se nos sete dias das bodas o decifrardes e descobrirdes, eu vos darei trinta lençóis e trinta mudas de roupas.
13 »If you cannot tell me the answer you must give me thirty pieces of fine linen and thirty sets of fine clothes.« »Tell us the riddle,« they said.
13 E, se não puderdes decifrar, vós me dareis a mim trinta lençóis e as trinta mudas de roupas. E eles lhe disseram: Dá-nos o teu enigma a decifrar, para que o ouçamos.
14 He said: »Out of the eater came something to eat; Out of the strong came something sweet.« Three days later they still could not figure out the riddle.
14 Então lhes disse: Do comedor saiu comida, e do forte saiu doçura. E em três dias não puderam decifrar o enigma.
15 On the fourth day they said to Samsons wife: »Trick your husband into telling us what the riddle means. If you do not, we will burn your fathers house with you in it. Did you invite us here to rob us?«
15 E sucedeu que, ao sétimo dia, disseram à mulher de Sansão: Persuade a teu marido que nos declare o enigma, para que porventura não queimemos a fogo a ti e à casa de teu pai; chamastes-nos aqui para vos apossardes do que é nosso, não é assim?
16 Samsons wife approached him in tears and said: »You do not love me! You just hate me! You told my friends a riddle and did not tell me its meaning!« He said: »I have not told my father and mother. Why should I tell you?«
16 E a mulher de Sansão chorou diante dele, e disse: Tão-somente me desprezas, e não me amas; pois deste aos filhos do meu povo um enigma para decifrar, e ainda não o declaraste a mim. E ele lhe disse: Eis que nem a meu pai nem a minha mãe o declarei, e to declararia a ti?
17 She cried about it for the whole seven days of the feast. She nagged him so that on the seventh day he told her what the riddle meant. Then she told the Philistines.
17 E chorou diante dele os sete dias em que celebravam as bodas; sucedeu, pois, que ao sétimo dia lho declarou, porquanto o importunava; então ela declarou o enigma aos filhos do seu povo.
18 On the seventh day, before Samson went into the bedroom, the men of the city said to him: »What could be sweeter than honey? What could be stronger than a lion?« Samson replied: »If you had not been plowing with my cow, you would not know the answer now.«
18 Disseram, pois, a Sansão os homens daquela cidade, ao sétimo dia, antes de se pôr o sol: Que coisa há mais doce do que o mel? E que coisa há mais forte do que o leão? E ele lhes disse: Se vós não lavrásseis com a minha novilha, nunca teríeis descoberto o meu enigma.
19 Suddenly the power of Jehovah made him strong. He went to Ashkelon, where he killed thirty men. He stripped them and gave their fine clothes to the men who had solved the riddle. He returned home, furious about what had happened.
19 Então o Espírito do Senhor tão poderosamente se apossou dele, que desceu aos ascalonitas, e matou deles trinta homens, e tomou as suas roupas, e deu as mudas de roupas aos que declararam o enigma; porém acendeu-se a sua ira, e subiu à casa de seu pai.
20 His wife was given to his best man at the wedding.
20 E a mulher de Sansão foi dada ao seu companheiro que antes o acompanhava.
