1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly. He was angry!
1 Mas Jonas ficou profundamente descontente com isso e enfureceu-se.
2 He prayed to Jehovah: »I pray to you, O Jehovah, was this what I said, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish. Because I knew that you are a gracious God. You are merciful, slow to anger, abundant in loving kindness, and one who takes pity over calamity tragedycatastrophedisaster.
2 Ele orou ao Senhor: "Senhor, não foi isso que eu disse quando ainda estava em casa? Foi por isso que me apressei em fugir para Társis. Eu sabia que tu és Deus misericordioso e compassivo, muito paciente, cheio de amor e que promete castigar mas depois se arrepende.
3 »Now, O Jehovah, please take my life from me for it is better for me to die than to live.«
3 Agora, Senhor, tira a minha vida, eu imploro, porque para mim é melhor morrer do que viver".
4 Jehovah asked him: »Do you have good reason to be angry?«
4 O Senhor lhe respondeu: "Você tem alguma razão para essa fúria? "
5 Then Jonah went out of the city. He sat on the east side of the city. He made a booth, and sat under it in the shade. He wanted to see what would become of the city.
5 Jonas saiu e sentou-se num lugar a leste da cidade. Ali, construiu para si um abrigo, sentou-se à sua sombra e esperou para ver o que aconteceria com a cidade.
6 And Jehovah God prepared a gourd plant. He made it grow up over Jonah. That way it would be a shade over his head. It would deliver him from his disastrous fateful attitude. So Jonah was very glad to have the gourd plant.
6 Então o Senhor Deus fez crescer uma planta sobre Jonas, para dar sombra à sua cabeça e livrá-lo do calor, e Jonas ficou muito alegre.
7 The next morning God prepared a worm and it attacked the plant and it withered.
7 Mas na madrugada do dia seguinte, Deus mandou uma lagarta atacar a planta de modo que ela secou.
8 When the sun rose God prepared a sultry burning hot east wind. So the sun beat upon the head of Jonah and he grew faint. He requested for himself that he might die. He said: »It is better for me to die than to live!«
8 Ao nascer do sol, Deus trouxe um vento oriental muito quente, e o sol bateu na cabeça de Jonas, a ponto de ele quase desmaiar. Com isso ele desejou morrer, e disse: "Para mim seria melhor morrer do que viver".
9 However God replied to Jonah: »Do you have good reason to be angry at the plant?« He said to God: »I have good reason to be angry even unto death.«
9 Mas Deus disse a Jonas: "Você tem alguma razão para estar tão furioso por causa da planta? " Respondeu ele: "Sim, tenho! E estou furioso a ponto de querer morrer".
10 Jehovah said: »You have compassion for the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow. It came up overnight and perished in a night.
10 Mas o Senhor lhe disse: "Você tem pena dessa planta, embora não a tenha podado nem a tenha feito crescer. Ela nasceu numa noite e numa noite morreu.
11 »Should I not then have regard for Nineveh, that great city, where there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand people that do not know the difference between their right and their left hand, and also many animals?«
11 Contudo, Nínive tem mais de cento e vinte mil pessoas que não sabem nem distinguir a mão direita da esquerda, além de muitos rebanhos. Não deveria eu ter pena dessa grande cidade? "
