1 »Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you will no longer be called tender and delicate.
1 Desce de teu trono, agacha-te ao solo, virgem, filha de Babilônia; assenta-te no chão, sem trono, filha dos caldeus! Já não serás chamada a delicada e a voluptuosa.
2 »Take the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, strip off the skirt; uncover the leg and cross the rivers.
2 Toma a mó, vai moer a farinha, tira teu véu, arregaça teu vestido, descobre tuas pernas para passar os rios,
3 »Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame will be exposed. I will take vengeance. I will not spare a man.«
3 {descobre tua nudez, que se veja teu opróbrio}. Vou exercer uma implacável vingança,
4 Our Redeemer, Jehovah of Hosts is His name, The Holy One of Israel.
4 diz o nosso Redentor, que se intitula o Senhor dos exércitos, o Santo de Israel.
5 »Sit silently and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans. You will no longer be called the queen of kingdoms.
5 Senta-te em silêncio, mergulha na escuridão, filha dos caldeus, porque não mais te chamarão a soberana dos reinos.
6 »I was angry with my people. I profaned my heritage and gave them into your hand. You did not show mercy to them. You made your yoke very heavy on the aged.
6 Sem dúvida eu me havia irritado contra meu povo, profanei minha herança, entreguei-o nas tuas mãos; mas tu o trataste sem piedade, fizeste pesar duramente teu jugo sobre o ancião.
7 »You said: I will be a queen for a very long time! You did not consider these things or remember their outcome.
7 Tu te dizias: Eu serei sempre soberana perpétua. Sem refletir, não consideraste o fim.
8 »Hear this you sensual one! You dwell securely and say in your heart: I am, and there is no one besides me. I will not sit as a widow. I will not lose children. (Revelation 18:2-8)
8 Agora, portanto, ouve isto, voluptuosa, que reinas em segurança, que dizes em teu coração: Eu e nada mais que eu! Não conhecerei a viuvez, nem a perda de meus filhos.
9 »Two things will come on you suddenly in one day: Loss of children and widowhood. They will come on you in full measure in spite of your abundance of sorceries, in spite of the great power of your spells.
9 Estas duas desgraças virão sobre ti num só dia: a perda de teus filhos e a viuvez te atormentarão ao mesmo tempo, a despeito de todos os teus sortilégios e teus poderosos encantos.
10 »You felt sure of yourself in your evil. You thought that no one could see you. Your wisdom and knowledge led you astray. Then you said to yourself: I am God! There is no one else like me.
10 Tu te fiavas em tua malícia e dizias a ti mesma: Ninguém me vê! Mas tua habilidade e tua astúcia te desencaminharam a tal ponto que dizias em teu coração: Eu e nada a não ser eu!
11 »Disaster will come upon you, and none of your magic can stop it. Ruin will come on you suddenly, ruin you never dreamed of!
11 Ora, uma calamidade virá sobre ti e não saberás conjurá-la; a catástrofe vai desabar sobre ti sem que possas impedi-la. Repentinamente alcançar-te-á uma ruína que não terás sabido evitar.
12 Keep all your magic spells and charms. You have used them since you were young. Perhaps they will be of some help to you. Perhaps you can frighten your enemies.
12 Agarra-te, portanto, a teus feitiços e à multidão de teus sortilégios, nos quais te esmeraste desde tua juventude! Talvez acharás uma receita eficaz para criar o terror.
13 »You are powerless in spite of the advice you get. Let your astrologers come forward and save you! Let those people who study the stars, who map out the zones of the heavens tell you from month to month what is going to happen to you.
13 Esbanjaste teus esforços entre tantos conselheiros. Que eles então se levantem e te salvem, aqueles que preparam o mapa do céu e observam os astros, que comunicam a cada mês como irão as coisas.
14 »Surely they are like stubble. The fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone and no fire to sit by.
14 Ei-los como argueiros de palha que o fogo consumirá; não poderão escapar às investidas da chama. {Não será um braseiro onde se coze o pão, nem um fogo perto do qual se assenta}.
15 »That is all they can do for you, these you have labored with and trafficked with since childhood. Each of them goes on in his error. No one can save you.
15 Eis o que valerão teus feiticeiros que tens procurado consultar desde tua juventude. Eles fogem espavoridos, cada qual para seu lado, sem que nenhum venha em teu socorro.
