1 The famine was extremely bad in the land.
1 A fome pesava sobre o país.
2 When they finished eating the grain they brought from Egypt, Israel said to his sons: »Go back and buy us a little more food.«
2 E tendo acabado o trigo trazido do Egito, o pai disse aos seus filhos: "Voltai e comprai-nos um pouco de víveres."
3 Judah said to him: »The man gave us strict warning! He said: You will not be allowed to see me again unless your brother is with you.
3 Judá respondeu-lhe: "Aquele homem nos declarou formalmente que não voltássemos à sua presença sem levar conosco nosso irmão.
4 »If you let our brother go with us, we will go and buy food for you.
4 Se mandas nosso irmão conosco, desceremos para comprar víveres.
5 »If you will not let him go, we will not go. The man said to us: You will not be allowed to see me again unless your brother is with you.«
5 Mas, se o não deixas ir, não desceremos, porque ele nos disse: Não sereis admitidos em minha presença, se vosso irmão não estiver convosco."
6 Israel asked: »Why have you made trouble for me by telling the man you had another brother?«
6 Israel disse: "Por que me fizestes este mal, dando-lhe a conhecer que tínheis ainda um irmão?"
7 They answered: »The man kept asking about our family and us. He asked, Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother? We simply answered his questions. How could we possibly know he would say, Bring your brother here?«
7 "Aquele homem, responderam eles, perguntou por nós e por nossa família, e quis saber se nosso pai vivia ainda, se tínhamos outro irmão; e respondemos às suas perguntas. Podíamos, porventura, adivinhar que ele nos ia mandar levar a ele o nosso irmão?"
8 Then Judah said to his father Israel: »Send the boy along with me. Let us get going so that we will not starve to death.
8 E Judá disse a Israel, seu pai: "Deixa partir o menino comigo, e pôr-nos-emos a caminho para essa viagem. Desse modo poderemos viver, e escaparemos à morte, nós, tu e nossos filhinhos.
9 »I guarantee that he will come back. You can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and place him here in front of you, you can blame me the rest of my life.
9 Eu respondo por ele: é de mim que tu o reclamarás. Se eu não to reconduzir e não o recolocar diante de ti, serei eternamente culpado diante de ti.
10 »If we had not waited so long, we could have made this trip twice by now.«
10 Se não tivéssemos demorado tanto, certamente já pela segunda vez estaríamos de volta."
11 Their father Israel said: »If that is the way it has to be, then take the man a gift. Put some of the best products of the land in your bags. Take a little balm, a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.
11 "Se assim é, disse-lhes Israel, seu pai, tomai em vossas bagagens os melhores produtos da terra, e levai-os como presente a esse homem: um pouco de bálsamo, um pouco de mel, resina, ládano, nozes de pistácia e amêndoas.
12 »Take twice as much money with you, because you must take back the money that was returned in the top of your sacks. Maybe it was a mistake.
12 Levai também convosco o dinheiro em dobro para restituir a soma que encontrastes na boca dos sacos, certamente por engano.
13 »Take your brother and return at once.
13 Tomai vosso irmão, parti e ide ter com esse homem.
14 »May God Almighty cause the man to have pity on you, so that he will give Benjamin and your other brother back to you. As for me, if I must lose my children, I must lose them.«
14 Que o Deus todo-poderoso vos faça ganhar os favores desse homem, a fim de que ele deixe voltar vosso irmão, juntamente com Benjamim. Quanto a mim, se devo ser privado de meus filhos, paciência, que eu seja privado deles!"
15 So the brothers took the gifts and twice as much money, and set out for Egypt with Benjamin. There they presented themselves to Joseph.
15 Tomaram, pois, consigo o presente e uma soma dobrada de dinheiro, assim como Benjamim, e partiram para o Egito. E apresentaram-se a José.
16 He saw Benjamin and told the servant in charge of his house: »Take these men to my house. Slaughter an animal and cook it, so they can eat with me at noon.«
16 José, vendo-os e com eles Benjamim, disse ao seu intendente: "Faze entrar estes homens na casa, mata um animal, e prepara-o, pois comerão comigo ao meio-dia."
17 The servant did as he was told. He took the brothers to Josephs house.
17 Fez o intendente como José tinha dito: introduziu-os na casa de José.
18 On the way they were worried and started talking: »We are being taken there because of the money that was put back in our sacks last time. He will arrest us and take our donkeys. He will make us his slaves!«
18 Vendo isto, ficaram amedrontados: "É, diziam eles, por causa do dinheiro, encontrado da outra vez nos nossos sacos, que nos conduzem aqui. Vão-nos assaltar, cair sobre nós, escravizar-nos e apoderar-se de nossos jumentos."
19 When they arrived at Josephs house, they said to the servant in charge:
19 Então, aproximando-se do intendente da casa de José, falaram-lhe à entrada da casa:
20 »We came to Egypt once before to buy grain.
20 "Desculpa, meu senhor, disseram eles, viemos já uma vez comprar víveres.
21 »When we stopped for the night, we each found in our grain sacks the exact amount we had paid. We have brought that money back.
21 Quando chegamos à estalagem e abrimos nossos sacos, o dinheiro de cada um se encontrava na boca de seu saco: era o peso exato do dinheiro. Tornamos a trazê-lo conosco;
22 »We brought enough money to buy more grain. We do not know who put the money in our sacks.«
22 e trazemos, ao mesmo tempo, outro dinheiro para comprar víveres. Não sabemos quem tenha metido nosso dinheiro em nossos sacos."
23 »It is all right,« the servant replied. »Do not worry. The God you and your father worship must have put the money there, because your money came first to me.« Then he brought Simeon out to them.
23 "Ficai tranqüilos, respondeu-lhes ele, nada temais. É o vosso Deus, o Deus de vossos pais, quem vos pôs um tesouro em vossos sacos; o vosso dinheiro me foi entregue." Depois trouxe-lhes Simeão.
24 The servant took them into Josephs house. He gave them water to wash their feet. He also tended their donkeys.
24 Fê-los em seguida entrar na casa de José, deu-lhes água para lavarem os pés e forragem para os seus jumentos.
25 The brothers prepared their gifts so they could give them to Joseph at noon. For they had heard they were going to eat there.
25 E, enquanto esperavam por José, que devia voltar ao meio-dia, preparavam o seu presente, pois foi-lhes anunciado que comeriam em casa dele.
26 Joseph came home and they gave him the gifts they had brought. They bowed down to him.
26 Logo que José entrou em casa, ofereceram-lhe os presentes que tinham trazido, prostrando-se diante dele até a terra.
27 Joseph asked how they were. He said: »What about your elderly father? Is he still alive?«
27 Ele perguntou pela saúde deles e ajuntou: "Vosso velho pai, do qual me falastes, vai bem? Ainda vive?"
28 They answered: »Your servant our father is still alive and well.« Again they bowed down to Joseph.
28 "Teu servo, nosso pai, está passando bem; e vive ainda", responderam-lhe inclinando-se até o solo.
29 Joseph looked around and saw his brother Benjamin. He said: »This must be the youngest brother you told me about. God bless you, my son.«
29 Então, levantando os olhos, José viu Benjamim, seu irmão, filho de sua mãe. "É este, disse ele, vosso irmão mais novo do qual me falastes?" E ajuntou: "Que Deus te faça misericórdia, meu filho!"
30 Right away he rushed off to his room and cried because of his love for Benjamin.
30 E retirou-se precipitadamente, porque suas entranhas se tinham comovido por causa de seu irmão, e tinha vontade de chorar; entrou em seu quarto e deu livre curso às lágrimas.
31 After washing his face and returning, he was able to control himself. He said: »Serve the meal!«
31 Depois de ter lavado o rosto saiu e, procurando dominar-se, disse: "Servi a mesa".
32 Joseph was served at a table by himself. His brothers were served at another. The Egyptians sat at yet another table. This is because Egyptians felt it was disgusting to eat with Hebrews.
32 Serviu-se-lhe à parte, seus irmãos também à parte, e igualmente à parte os egípcios, seus comensais, porque lhes é proibido comer com hebreus; isto é para eles uma coisa abominável.
33 To the surprise of Josephs brothers, they were seated in front of him according to their ages, from the oldest to the youngest.
33 Os irmãos de José foram colocados diante dele, desde o mais velho até o mais novo, segundo sua idade, o que lhes fez olhar uns para os outros assombrados.
34 They were served food from Josephs table. And Benjamin was given five times as much as each of the others. So Josephs brothers drank with him and had a good time.
34 José mandou que se lhes trouxessem porções de sua própria mesa, e a parte de Benjamim foi cinco vezes maior que a dos outros. Eles beberam e alegraram-se com ele.
