1 Jehoash became king of Judah. It was the seventh year of Jehu's rule over Israel. Jehoash ruled for forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.
1 No sétimo ano do reinado de Jeú, de Israel, Joás se tornou rei de Judá. Ele governou em Jerusalém quarenta anos. A mãe dele se chamava Zíbia e era da cidade de Berseba.
2 Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of Jehovah all his days, because he was guided by the teaching of Jehoiada the priest.
2 Durante toda a sua vida Joás fez o que agrada a Deus, o Senhor , pois o sacerdote Joiada o aconselhava.
3 The high places were not taken away. The people continued making offerings and burning them in the high places.
3 No entanto, os lugares pagãos de adoração não foram destruídos, e o povo continuou a oferecer sacrifícios e a queimar incenso ali.
4 Jehoash said to the priests: »All the money of the holy things, which comes into the house of Jehovah, the amount fixed for every man's payment, and all the money given by any man freely by motivation of his heart,
4 Joás chamou os sacerdotes e mandou que eles juntassem todo o dinheiro recolhido no Templo, isto é, os pagamentos pelos sacrifícios, os impostos do Templo, o dinheiro das promessas e as ofertas voluntárias.
5 »Let the priests take, every man from his friends and neighbors, to make good what is damaged in the Temple, wherever it is to be seen.«
5 Cada sacerdote era responsável pelo dinheiro trazido pelas pessoas que ele servia, e o dinheiro era para ser usado nos consertos do Templo.
6 But in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had not made good the damaged parts of the Temple.
6 Mas, no ano vinte e três do reinado de Joás, os sacerdotes ainda não haviam feito nenhum conserto.
7 He called in Jehoiada and the other priests and asked them: »Why are you not repairing the Temple? From now on you are not to keep the money you receive. You must hand it over, so that the repairs can be made.«
7 Por isso Joás chamou Joiada e os outros sacerdotes e lhes perguntou: — Por que vocês não estão consertando o Templo? De agora em diante, não fiquem com o dinheiro que receberem, mas entreguem para que os consertos possam ser feitos.
8 The priests agreed to this and also agreed not to make the repairs in the Temple.
8 Os sacerdotes concordaram com isso e também concordaram em não ficarem encarregados de fazer os consertos no Templo.
9 Then Jehoiada took a box, made a hole in the lid, and placed the box by the altar, on the right side as one enters the Temple. The priests on duty at the entrance put in the box all the money given by the worshipers.
9 Então Joiada pegou uma caixa, fez uma abertura na tampa e pôs a caixa perto do altar, do lado direito de quem entra no Templo. Os sacerdotes que tomavam conta da entrada punham na caixa todo o dinheiro dado pelos adoradores.
10 Whenever there was a large amount of money in the box, the royal secretary and the High Priest would come, melt down the silver, and weigh it.
10 Quando viam que já havia muito dinheiro na caixa, o secretário do rei e o Grande Sacerdote vinham, contavam o dinheiro e o punham em sacos.
11 After recording the exact amount, they would hand the silver over to the men in charge of the work in the Temple. These would pay the carpenters, the builders,
11 Depois de registrarem a quantia certa, eles entregavam o dinheiro aos homens que estavam encarregados do trabalho no Templo, e estes pagavam os carpinteiros, os construtores,
12 the masons, and the stonecutters, buy the timber and the stones used in the repairs, and pay all other necessary expenses.
12 os pedreiros e os cortadores de pedras. Também compravam a madeira e as pedras para os consertos e pagavam todas as outras despesas necessárias.
13 None of the money was used to pay for making silver cups, bowls, trumpets, or tools for tending the lamps, or any other article of silver or of gold.
13 No entanto, nenhuma parte do dinheiro era usada para se fazerem taças de prata, bacias, trombetas, tesouras de aparar pavios de lamparinas ou qualquer outro objeto de prata ou de ouro.
14 It was all used to pay the workers and to buy the materials used in the repairs.
14 Todo o dinheiro era usado para pagar os trabalhadores e para comprar o material dos consertos.
15 The men in charge of the work were very honest. There was no need to require them to account for the funds.
15 Os homens encarregados do trabalho eram honestos em tudo, e por isso não havia necessidade de pedir que prestassem contas do dinheiro.
16 The money given for the repayment offerings and for the offerings for sin was not deposited in the box. It belonged to the priests.
16 O dinheiro das ofertas para tirar culpas e das ofertas para tirar pecados não era colocado na caixa, mas ficava com os sacerdotes.
17 King Hazael of Syria attacked the city of Gath and conquered it. Then he decided to attack Jerusalem.
17 Nessa época o rei Hazael, da Síria, atacou a cidade de Gate e a conquistou; depois resolveu atacar Jerusalém.
18 King Jehoash of Judah took all the offerings that his predecessors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah had dedicated to Jehovah, added to them his own offerings and all the gold in the treasuries of the Temple and the palace, and sent them all as a gift to King Hazael, who then led his army away from Jerusalem.
18 O rei Joás, de Judá, pegou todas as ofertas que Josafá, Jeorão e Acazias, que haviam sido reis antes dele, haviam separado para Deus, o Senhor . Junto com essas ofertas ele pôs as suas próprias ofertas e todo o ouro que havia no tesouro do Templo e do palácio e mandou tudo como presente para o rei Hazael. Então Hazael desistiu de atacar Jerusalém.

20 His own officials plotted against him and killed him at the House of the Mound on the road that goes down to Silla.
