1 King Benhadad of Syria mustered his entire army, accompanied by thirty-two other kings with their horses and chariots, he laid siege on Samaria, and launched attacks against it.
1 E Ben-Hadade, o rei da Síria, reuniu todo o seu exército; e havia trinta e dois reis com ele, e cavalos, e carruagens; e ele subiu e sitiou Samaria, e guerreou contra ela.
2 He sent messengers into the city to King Ahab of Israel to say: »King Benhadad demands that
2 E ele enviou mensageiros a Acabe, rei de Israel, para dentro da cidade, e disse-lhe: Assim diz Ben-Hadade:
3 you surrender to him your silver and gold, your women and the strongest of your children.«
3 A tua prata e o teu ouro são meus; as tuas esposas também e os melhores de teus filhos são meus.
4 Tell my lord, King Benhadad, that I agree; he can have everything I own, Ahab answered.
4 E o rei de Israel respondeu, e disse: Ó rei meu senhor de acordo com o teu dizer, eu sou teu, e tudo o que tenho.
5 Later the messengers came back to Ahab with another demand from Benhadad: »I sent you word that you were to hand over to me your silver and gold, your women and your children.«
5 E os mensageiros retornaram, e disseram: Assim falou Ben-Hadade, dizendo: Embora eu tenha mandado a ti, dizendo: Tu me entregarás a tua prata, e o teu ouro, e as tuas esposas, e os teus filhos;
6 Now I will send my officers to search your palace and the homes of your officials. They will take everything they consider valuable. They will be there about this time tomorrow.
6 mesmo assim enviarei os meus servos a ti amanhã por volta desta hora, e eles procurarão na tua casa, e nas casas dos teus servos; e será que tudo o que for agradável aos seus olhos, eles porão em suas mãos, e retirarão.
7 Then the king of Israel sent for all the responsible men of the land, and said: »Now will you take note and see the evil purpose of this man. He sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, and I did not keep them back.«
7 Então, o rei de Israel chamou todos os anciãos da terra, e disse: Notem, rogo-vos, e vede como este homem procura o mal; porque enviou-me pelas minhas esposas e meus filhos, e pela minha prata, e pelo meu ouro; e eu não lhos neguei.
8 All the responsible men and the people said to him: »Do not pay attention to him or do what he says.«
8 E todos os anciãos e todo o povo disseram a ele: Não atentes a ele, tampouco consintas.
9 So he said to the representatives of Benhadad: »Say to my lord the king: All the orders you sent the first time I will do. But I will not do this thing.« The representatives went back with this answer.
9 Porquanto disse aos mensageiros de Ben-Hadade: Dizei ao meu senhor, o rei: Tudo o que mandaste ao teu servo na primeira vez, fá-lo-ei; mas isto não posso fazer. E os mensageiros partiram, e lhe trouxeram novamente palavra.
10 Benhadad sent Ahab the following message: »May the gods strike me dead if there will be enough dust left from Samaria to give a handful to each soldier who follows me.«
10 E Ben-Hadade mandou dizer a ele: Os deuses assim me façam, e ainda mais, se o pó de Samaria, em punhados, for suficiente para todo o povo que me segue.
11 The king of Israel responded: »It is said, let not the one who puts on his armor boast like the one who takes it off.«
11 E o rei de Israel respondeu e disse: Dizei-lhe: Que aquele que se cinge das armas não se glorie como aquele que se solta.
12 Benhadad heard this when he and his allies were drinking in their tents. He told his officers to get ready. So they got prepared to attack the city.
12 E sucedeu, quando Ben-Hadade ouviu esta mensagem, enquanto ele e o rei estavam bebendo nos pavilhões, disse aos seus servos: Ponde-vos em formação. E eles se puseram em formação contra a cidade.
13 A prophet approached King Ahab of Israel and said: »This is what Jehovah says: Have you seen this large army? I will hand it over to you today. Then you will know that I am Jehovah.«
13 E, eis que veio ali um profeta até Acabe, rei de Israel, dizendo: Assim diz o SENHOR: Tens tu visto toda esta grande multidão? Eis que a entregarei à tua mão neste dia; e tu saberás que eu sou o SENHOR.
14 Ahab asked: »How will this be done?« The prophet answered: »This is what Jehovah says: By using the young officers of the district governors.« »Who will start the battle?« Ahab asked. »You will,« the prophet answered.
14 E Acabe disse: Por quem? E ele disse: Assim diz o SENHOR: Justamente pelos moços dos príncipes das províncias. Então, ele disse: Quem ordenará a batalha? E ele respondeu: Tu.
15 Ahab mustered the young officers of the district governors. There were two hundred and thirty-two. After counting them, he counted all the Israelite soldiers. There were seven thousand.
15 Então, ele enumerou os moços dos príncipes das províncias, e eles eram duzentos e trinta e dois; e, depois deles, ele enumerou todo o povo, todos os filhos de Israel, sendo sete mil.
16 In the middle of the day they went out. But Benhadad was drinking in the tents with the thirty-two kings who were helping him.
16 E eles saíram ao meio-dia. Ben-Hadade, no entanto, estava se embriagando nos pavilhões, ele e os reis, os trinta e dois reis que o ajudaram.
17 The servants of the chiefs who were over the divisions of the land went forward first. Benhadad sent out a patrol and they told him: »Men have come out from Samaria.«
17 E os moços dos príncipes das províncias saíram primeiro; e Ben-Hadade mandou verificar, e eles lhe contaram, dizendo: Há homens vindos de Samaria.
18 He said: »If they have come out for peace, take them alive and if they have come out for war, take them alive.«
18 E ele disse: Se eles saíram em paz, trazei-mos vivos; ou se saíram em guerra, trazei-mos vivos.
19 So the servants of the chiefs of the divisions of the land went out of the town, with the army following them.
19 Assim, estes jovens dos príncipes das províncias saíram da cidade, e o exército que os seguia.
20 Each one killed his opponent. The Syrians Aramaeans went in flight with Israel after them. Benhadad the king of Aram got away safely on a horse with his horsemen.
20 E eles mataram, cada qual, o seu homem; e os sírios fugiram; e Israel os perseguiu; e Ben-Hadade, o rei da Síria, escapou em cima de um cavalo, com os cavaleiros.
21 The king of Israel took the horses and the war-carriages and caused great destruction among the Syrians.
21 E o rei de Israel saiu, e feriu os cavalos e carruagens, e matou os sírios com um grande massacre.
22 Then the prophet came up to the king of Israel, and said: »Now make yourself strong. Be careful what you do. Otherwise a year from now the king of Aram will come up against you again.«
22 E o profeta veio até o rei de Israel, e disse a ele: Vai, fortalece-te e atenta, e vê o que fazes; pois ao retorno do ano, o rei da Síria subirá contra ti.
23 Then the king of Aram's servants said to him: »Their god is a god of the hills. That is why they were stronger than us. If we attack them in the lowlands, we will certainly be stronger than they.
23 E os servos do rei da Síria disseram a ele: Os seus deuses são deuses dos outeiros; por isso, eles foram mais fortes do que nós; mas lutemos contra eles na planície, e seguramente seremos mais fortes do que eles.
24 »This is what you must do: take the kings from their positions, and put captains in their places.
24 E faze isto: Retira os reis, cada qual do seu lugar, e põe capitães no lugar deles;
25 »Assemble another army like the one that was destroyed. Horse for horse, and carriage for carriage let us make war on them in the lowlands, and certainly we will be stronger than they.« He listened and did what was suggested.
25 e enumera para ti um exército, semelhante ao exército que perdeste, cavalo por cavalo, e carruagem por carruagem; e lutaremos contra eles na planície, e, seguramente, seremos mais fortes do que eles. E ele deu ouvidos à sua voz, e assim o fez.
26 So, a year later, Benhadad got the Syrians Aramaeans together and went to Aphek to make war on Israel.
26 E sucedeu, ao retorno do ano, que Ben-Hadade enumerou os sírios, e subiu até Afeque, para lutar contra Israel.
27 And the children of Israel assembled, and food was made ready and they went against them. The children of Israel camped like two little flocks of goats before them. All the country was full of the Syrians.
27 E os filhos de Israel foram enumerados, e estavam todos presentes, e foram contra eles; e os filhos de Israel se acamparam diante deles como dois pequenos rebanhos de cabritos; mas os sírios enchiam a terra.
28 A man of God came to the king of Israel. He said: »Jehovah says, Because the Aramaeans have said, »Jehovah is a god of the hills and not of the valleys; I will give all this great army into your hands, and you will see that I am Jehovah.« «
28 E veio ali um homem de Deus, e falou ao rei de Israel, e disse: Assim diz o SENHOR: Como os sírios disseram: O SENHOR é Deus dos outeiros, mas não é Deus dos vales, por isso, entregarei toda esta grande multidão na tua mão, e saberás que eu sou o SENHOR.
29 The two armies kept their positions facing one another for seven days. The seventh day the fight was started. The children of Israel put to the sword a hundred thousand Aramaean footmen in one day.
29 E eles acamparam um diante do outro por sete dias. E assim foi, que no sétimo dia a batalha foi travada; e os filhos de Israel mataram, dos sírios, cem mil homens de pé, em um dia.
30 The rest went in flight to Aphek, into the town, where a wall came down on the twenty-seven thousand who were still living. Benhadad went in flight into the town, into an inner room.
30 O restante, porém, fugiu para Afeque, para dentro da cidade; e ali uma muralha caiu sobre vinte e sete mil dos homens que restaram. E Ben-Hadade fugiu, e entrou na cidade, dentro de uma câmara interna.
31 His servants said to him: »It is said that the kings of Israel are full of mercy: let us then put on haircloth, and cords on our heads, and go to the king of Israel. Maybe he will give you your life.«
31 E os seus servos disseram a ele: Eis que, agora, ouvimos que os reis da casa de Israel são reis misericordiosos; rogo-te que ponhamos panos de saco sobre os nossos lombos, e cordas sobre as nossas cabeças, e saiamos ao rei de Israel; porventura ele salve a tua vida.
32 So they put on haircloth, and cords on their heads, and went to the king of Israel and said: »Your servant Benhadad says: Let me now keep my life.« And he said: »Is he still living? He is my brother.«
32 Assim, eles cingiram os lombos de panos de saco, e puseram cordas sobre as suas cabeças, e vieram até o rei de Israel, e disseram: O teu servo, Ben-Hadade, diz: Suplico-te que me deixes viver. E ele disse: Ele ainda está vivo? Ele é meu irmão.
33 Now the men took it as a sign, and were quick to pick up on his word. They said: »Benhadad is your brother.« Then he said: »Go and get him.« So Ben-hadad came out to him and he made him get up into his carriage.
33 Ora, os homens observaram diligentemente se qualquer coisa viria da parte dele, e, rapidamente a apreendiam; e disseram: O teu irmão, Ben-Hadade. Então, ele disse: Ide e trazei-mo. Então, Ben-Hadade veio até ele; e fez com que ele subisse na carruagem.
34 Benhadad said: »The towns my father took from your father I will give back. You may name streets for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria.« As for me, at the price of this agreement you will let me go. So he made an agreement with him and let him go.
34 E Ben-Hadade lhe disse: As cidades que o meu pai tomou do teu pai, restituí-las-ei; e farás ruas para ti em Damasco, como o meu pai fez em Samaria. Então, disse Acabe: Despedir-te-ei com este pacto. Assim, ele fez um pacto com ele, e o despediu.
35 A man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbors by the word of Jehovah: »Give me a wound.« But the man would not.
35 E um certo homem dos filhos dos profetas disse ao seu próximo, pela palavra do SENHOR: Fere-me, rogo-te. E o homem se recusou a feri-lo.
36 Then he said: »Because you have not listened to the voice of Jehovah, immediately after you leave me a lion will kill you.« When he went away a lion came rushing at him and killed him.
36 Então, ele disse ao homem: Como não obedeceste à voz do SENHOR, eis que tão logo partires de mim, um leão te matará. E, assim que ele partiu, um leão o encontrou, e o matou.
37 Then he came across another man, and said: »Give me a wound.« And the man gave him a blow wounding him.
37 Depois, ele encontrou um outro homem e lhe disse: Fere-me, rogo-te. E o homem o feriu, de modo que ao ferir-lhe, ele o machucou.
38 So the prophet went away, and pulling his headband over his eyes to keep his face covered. He took his place by the road waiting for the king.
38 Assim, o profeta partiu, e esperou o rei junto ao caminho, e disfarçou-se com cinzas sobre a face.
39 When the king went by he cried out to him: »Your servant went out into the fight. A man came to me. He brought a man to me and said: guard this man. Do not let him get away. Your life is the price of his life or you will have to give a talent of silver in payment.
39 E, quando o rei por ali passava, ele gritou ao rei, e disse: O teu servo saiu para o meio da batalha; e, eis que, um homem se virou para o lado, e me trouxe um homem, e disse: Cuida deste homem; se, de algum modo, ele vier a faltar, a tua vida será pela vida dele, ou, de outro modo, pagarás um talento de prata.
40 »But while your servant was turning this way and that, he was gone. Then the king of Israel said to him: You are responsible; you have given the decision against yourself.«
40 E, enquanto o teu servo esteve ocupado, aqui e acolá, ele se foi. E o rei de Israel disse a ele: Assim há de ser o teu juízo; tu mesmo o decidiste.
41 He quickly took the headband from his eyes. The king of Israel saw that he was one of the prophets.
41 E ele se apressou, e removeu as cinzas da face; e o rei de Israel reconheceu que ele era dos profetas.
42 He said to him: »These are the words of Jehovah: Because you have let go from your hands the man whom I had put to the curse, your life will be taken for his life, and your people for his people.«
42 E ele lhe disse: Assim diz o SENHOR: Porque deixaste escapar da tua mão um homem ao qual indiquei para a total destruição, por isso, a tua vida irá pela vida dele, e o teu povo pelo povo dele.
43 Then the king of Israel went back to his house, bitter and angry, he went to Samaria.
43 E o rei de Israel foi para a sua casa revoltado e aborrecido, e veio até Samaria.
