1 A good name [is] better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
1 Melhor é o bom nome do que o melhor ungüento, e o dia da morte do que o dia do nascimento.
2 [It is] better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that [is] the end of all men; and the living will lay [it] to his heart.
2 Melhor é ir à casa onde há luto do que ir a casa onde há banquete; porque naquela se vê o fim de todos os homens, e os vivos o aplicam ao seu coração.
3 Sorrow [is] better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made better.
3 Melhor é a mágoa do que o riso, porque a tristeza do rosto torna melhor o coração.
4 The heart of the wise [is] in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools [is] in the house of laughter.
4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, mas o coração dos tolos na casa da alegria.
5 [It is] better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools.
5 Melhor é ouvir a repreensão do sábio do que ouvir alguém a canção dos tolos.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so [is] the laughter of the fool; this also [is] vanity.
6 Pois qual o crepitar dos espinhos debaixo da panela, tal é o riso do tolo; também isso é vaidade.
7 Surely oppression makes a wise man mad; and a bribe destroys the heart.
7 Verdadeiramente a opressão faz endoidecer até o sábio, e a peita corrompe o coração.
8 Better [is] the end of a thing than the beginning of it; the patient in spirit [is] better than the proud in spirit.
8 Melhor é o fim duma coisa do que o princípio; melhor é o paciente do que o arrogante.
9 Do not be hasty in your spirit to be angry; for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
9 Não te apresses no teu espírito a irar-te, porque a ira abriga-se no seio dos tolos.
10 Do not say, Why was [it] that the former days were better than these? For you do not ask wisely in regard to this.
10 Não digas: Por que razão foram os dias passados melhores do que estes; porque não provém da sabedoria esta pergunta.
11 Wisdom [is] good with an inheritance; but it is gain to those who see the sun.
11 Tão boa é a sabedoria como a herança, e mesmo de mais proveito para os que vêem o sol.
12 For wisdom [is] a defense, and money [is] a defense; but the excellency of knowledge [is] that wisdom gives life to those who have it.
12 Porque a sabedoria serve de defesa, como de defesa serve o dinheiro; mas a excelência da sabedoria é que ela preserva a vida de quem a possui.
13 Consider the work of God; for who can make straight what He has made crooked?
13 Considera as obras de Deus; porque quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez torto?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity take note [that] God also has set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
14 No dia da prosperidade regozija-te, mas no dia da adversidade considera; porque Deus fez tanto este como aquele, para que o homem nada descubra do que há de vir depois dele.
15 All [things] I have seen in the days of my vanity; there is a just one who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked one who prolongs [life] in his wickedness.
15 Tudo isto vi nos dias da minha vaidade: há justo que perece na sua justiça, e há ímpio que prolonga os seus dias na sua maldade.
16 Do not be righteous overmuch, neither make yourself overwise; why destroy yourself?
16 Não sejas demasiadamente justo, nem demasiadamente sábio; por que te destruirias a ti mesmo?
17 Do not be very wicked, and do not be a fool; why should you die before your time?
17 Não sejas demasiadamente ímpio, nem sejas tolo; por que morrerias antes do teu tempo?
18 [It is] good that you should take hold of this; yea, also from this do not withdraw your hand; for he who fears God shall come forth from all of them.
18 Bom é que retenhas isso, e que também daquilo não retires a tua mão; porque quem teme a Deus escapa de tudo isso.
19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than ten mighty ones who are in the city.
19 A sabedoria fortalece ao sábio mais do que dez governadores que haja na cidade.
20 For [there is] not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.
20 Pois não há homem justo sobre a terra, que faça o bem, e nunca peque.
21 Also do not listen to all words that are spoken; lest you hear your servant curse you.
21 Não escutes a todas as palavras que se disserem, para que não venhas a ouvir o teu servo amaldiçoar-te;
22 For also your own heart knows that you yourself have also cursed others many times.
22 pois tu sabes também que muitas vezes tu amaldiçoaste a outros.
23 All this I have proved by wisdom; I said, I will be wise; but it [was] far from me.
23 Tudo isto provei-o pela sabedoria; e disse: Far-me-ei sábio; porém a sabedoria ainda ficou longe de mim.
24 That which is far off and exceedingly deep, who can find it out?
24 Longe está o que já se foi, e profundíssimo; quem o poderá achar?
25 I set my heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason [of things], and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness;
25 Eu me volvi, e apliquei o meu coração para saber, e inquirir, e buscar a sabedoria e a razão de tudo, e para conhecer que a impiedade é insensatez e que a estultícia é loucura.
26 and I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart [is] snares and nets, and her hands [like] bands. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her, but the sinner shall be taken by her.
26 E eu achei uma coisa mais amarga do que a morte, a mulher cujo coração são laços e redes, e cujas mãos são grilhões; quem agradar a Deus escapará dela; mas o pecador virá a ser preso por ela.
27 Behold, this I have found, says the Preacher, [counting] one by one, to find out the sum,
27 Vedes aqui, isto achei, diz o pregador, conferindo uma coisa com a outra para achar a causa;
28 which my soul still sought, but I find not: one man among a thousand I have found, but a woman among all those I have not found.
28 causa que ainda busco, mas não a achei; um homem entre mil achei eu, mas uma mulher entre todas, essa não achei.
29 Lo, this only I have found, that God has made man upright, but they have sought out many inventions.
29 Eis que isto tão-somente achei: que Deus fez o homem reto, mas os homens buscaram muitos artifícios.
