1 And it happened after this, Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon died. And his son reigned in his place.
1 Algum tempo depois, morreu Naás, rei dos amonitas, e seu filho Hanum subiu ao trono.
2 And David said, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the sons of Ammon to Hanun, in order to comfort him.
2 Davi disse: “Vou demonstrar lealdade a Hanum assim como seu pai, Naás, sempre foi leal a mim”. Então Davi enviou representantes para expressar seu pesar a Hanum pela morte do pai dele. Mas, quando os representantes de Davi chegaram à terra de Amom,
3 But the rulers of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, Is David honoring your father in your eyes, because he has sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?
3 os líderes amonitas disseram a Hanum: “O rei acredita mesmo que esses homens estão aqui para honrar seu pai? Não! Davi os enviou com o objetivo de espionar a terra para vir e conquistá-la!”.
4 And Hanun took David's servants and shaved them, and cut off their garments in half, to the buttocks, and sent them away.
4 Então Hanum prendeu os representantes de Davi, raspou a barba de cada um, cortou metade de suas roupas até as nádegas e os mandou de volta a Davi.
5 And [some] came and told David how the men were treated. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Stay at Jericho until your beards are grown, and [then] return.
5 Quando Davi soube do que havia acontecido, enviou mensageiros ao encontro dos homens, para que lhes dissessem: “Fiquem em Jericó até que sua barba tenha crescido e voltem em seguida”, pois estavam muito envergonhados.
6 And the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves stink before David, and Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia and out of Maachah of Syria, and out of Zobah.
6 Quando Hanum e os amonitas perceberam quanto haviam enfurecido Davi, enviaram 35 toneladas de prata para Arã-Naarim, Arã-Maaca e Zobá, a fim de contratarem seus carros de guerra e cavaleiros.
7 And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, who came and pitched before Medeba. And the Ammonites gathered themselves from their cities and came to battle.
7 Também contrataram 32 mil carros de guerra e obtiveram o apoio do rei de Maaca e de seu exército. Esses soldados acamparam em Medeba, onde se juntaram a eles tropas amonitas que Hanum havia recrutado em suas próprias cidades.
8 And David heard, and he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.
8 Davi foi informado disso e enviou Joabe e todos os seus guerreiros para lutarem contra eles.
9 And the sons of Ammon came out and put the battle in order before the gate of the city. And the kings who had come [were] by themselves in the field.
9 As tropas amonitas avançaram e formaram sua frente de batalha à entrada da cidade, enquanto os outros reis se posicionaram para lutar nos campos abertos.
10 And Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, and he chose out of all the choice young men of Israel and set in order against the Syrians.
10 Joabe viu que teria de lutar em duas frentes ao mesmo tempo, por isso escolheu alguns dos melhores guerreiros de Israel e os pôs sob seu comando pessoal para enfrentar os sírios.
11 And he delivered the rest of the people into the hand of his brother Abishai. And they set in order against the sons of Ammon.
11 Deixou o restante do exército sob o comando de seu irmão Abisai, que atacou os amonitas.
12 And he said, If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me. But if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.
12 Joabe disse a seu irmão: “Se os sírios forem fortes demais para mim, venha me ajudar. E, se os amonitas forem fortes demais para você, eu irei ajudá-lo.
13 Be of good courage and let us behave ourselves bravely for our people, and for the cities of our God. And let the LORD do what is good in His sight.
13 Coragem! Lutemos bravamente por nosso povo e pelas cidades de nosso Deus. E que seja feita a vontade do S enhor !”.
14 And Joab and the people with him drew near before the Syrians to the battle. And they fled before him.
14 Joabe e suas tropas atacaram, e os sírios começaram a fugir.
15 And when the sons of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they also fled before his brother Abishai. And they entered into the city. And Joab came to Jerusalem.
15 Quando os amonitas viram que os sírios batiam em retirada, também fugiram de Abisai e recuaram para dentro da cidade. Então Joabe voltou para Jerusalém.
16 And the Syrians saw that they were beaten before Israel, and sent messengers and drew forth the Syrians who [were] beyond the river. And Shophach the captain of the army of Hadarezer went before them.
16 Os sírios viram que não tinham como enfrentar Israel. Assim, enviaram mensageiros para convocar mais soldados do outro lado do rio Eufrates. Essas tropas eram conduzidas por Sobaque, comandante do exército de Hadadezer.
17 And it was told to David. And he gathered all Israel and passed over Jordan and came on them. And he set in order against them. And David set in order against the Syrians, and they fought with him.
17 Quando Davi foi informado do que estava acontecendo, reuniu todo o Israel, atravessou o Jordão e posicionou suas tropas em formação de batalha. Entrou em combate com os sírios, que lutaram contra ele.
18 But the Syrians fled before Israel. And David killed seven thousand of the Syrians [in] chariots, and forty thousand footmen; and he killed Shophach the commander of the army.
18 Mais uma vez, porém, os sírios fugiram dos israelitas. O exército de Davi matou sete mil homens em carros de guerra e quarenta mil soldados de infantaria, incluindo Sobaque, comandante de seu exército.
19 And the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were beaten before Israel, and they made peace with David and became his servants. And Syria was not willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.
19 Quando os aliados de Hadadezer viram que ele havia sido derrotado por Israel, renderam-se a Davi e se tornaram seus súditos. Depois disso, os sírios não quiseram mais ajudar os amonitas.
