1 Now when ‘Ezra prayed, and when he made his confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there gathered themselves unto him out of Israel a very large assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept exceedingly much.
1 Enquanto Esdras orava e fazia essa confissão, chorando e com o rosto no chão diante do templo de Deus, uma grande multidão de israelitas — homens, mulheres e crianças — se reuniu e chorou amargamente com ele.
2 Thereupon commenced Shechanyah the son of Jechiel, of the sons of ‘Elam, and said unto ‘Ezra, we have indeed trespassed against our God, and have brought home strange wives of the nations of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
2 Então Secanias, filho de Jeiel, descendente de Elão, disse a Esdras: “Fomos infiéis a nosso Deus, pois nos casamos com mulheres estrangeiras, dos povos desta terra. Apesar disso, há esperança para Israel.
3 And now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the direction of the Lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God: and let it be done according to the law.
3 Façamos agora uma aliança com nosso Deus, firmando que nos divorciaremos de nossas esposas estrangeiras e as mandaremos embora com seus filhos. Seguiremos seu conselho e o conselho dos outros que tremem diante dos mandamentos de nosso Deus. Que tudo seja feito de acordo com a lei de Deus.
4 Arise; for this matter is obligatory upon thee; and we will be with thee: be strong, and do it.
4 Levante-se, pois é seu dever nos dizer como corrigir esta situação. Nós o apoiaremos; portanto, seja forte e faça o que tem de ser feito!”.
5 Then arose ‘Ezra, and caused the princes of the priests, the Levites, and of all Israel, to swear to do according to this word. And they swore.
5 Então Esdras se levantou e exigiu que os líderes dos sacerdotes, os levitas e todo o povo de Israel jurassem que fariam o que Secanias tinha dito. E todos fizeram um juramento solene.
6 Then arose ‘Ezra from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jochanan the son of Elyashib; and he went thither without having eaten bread, or having drunk water; for he was mourning because of the trespass of the exiles.
6 Em seguida, Esdras se retirou de diante do templo de Deus e foi à sala de Joanã, filho de Eliasibe. Não bebeu nem comeu nada enquanto esteve ali, pois ainda lamentava a infidelidade dos exilados que haviam regressado.
7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the exile, to gather themselves together at Jerusalem;
7 Depois disso, foi feita uma proclamação por todo o Judá e Jerusalém, para que todos os que vieram do exílio se reunissem em Jerusalém.
8 And that whosoever should not come within three days, according to the resolve of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be devoted, and himself separated from the congregation of the exiles.
8 Aqueles que não viessem em três dias perderiam todas as suas propriedades e seriam expulsos da comunidade dos exilados, conforme a decisão dos líderes e das autoridades.
9 Then were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together unto Jerusalem within three days: it was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the open place before the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and by reason of the showers of rain.
9 Dentro de três dias, todo o povo de Judá e de Benjamim havia se reunido em Jerusalém. A reunião aconteceu no dia 19 de dezembro, e todo o povo estava sentado na praça diante do templo de Deus. Tremiam por causa da seriedade do assunto e porque chovia.
10 And ‘Ezra the priest rose up, and said unto them, Ye have acted unfaithfully, and have brought home strange wives, to increase yet more the guiltiness of Israel.
10 Então o sacerdote Esdras se levantou e disse: “Vocês agiram de modo infiel. Aumentaram a culpa de Israel ao se casar com mulheres estrangeiras.
11 Now therefore make confession unto the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his will; and separate yourselves from the nations of the earth, and from the strange wives.
11 Agora, confessem seu pecado ao S enhor , o Deus de seus antepassados, e façam o que agrada a ele. Separem-se do povo da terra e dessas mulheres estrangeiras”.
12 Then answered all the assembly and said with a loud voice, So be it: according to thy word it is our duty to do.
12 Toda a comunidade respondeu em alta voz: “Você tem razão! Faremos o que disse!
13 But the people are many, and it is the rainy season, and we have not the strength to remain in the street, nor is this a work for one day or for two days; for we are many that have transgressed in this matter.
13 No entanto, não é algo que possa ser feito em um dia ou dois, pois há muitos de nós envolvidos neste grande pecado. E agora é a estação das chuvas, portanto não podemos ficar aqui fora por muito mais tempo.
14 Let however our princes stand forward for all the congregation, and let all those in our cities who have brought home strange wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders of each and every city, and its judges, until the fierce wrath of our God be turned away from us for this whole matter.
14 Que nossos líderes decidam por toda a comunidade. Todo aquele que tiver uma esposa estrangeira virá num dia marcado, acompanhado das autoridades e dos juízes de sua cidade, para que a ira ardente de nosso Deus a esse respeito seja afastada de nós”.
15 Only Jonathan the son of ‘Assahel and Jachzeyah the son of Thikvah withstood this proposal: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite assisted them.
15 Os únicos que se opuseram à proposta foram Jônatas, filho de Asael, e Jazeías, filho de Ticvá, apoiados por Mesulão e pelo levita Sabetai.
16 And the children of the exile did so. And then were set apart ‘Ezra the priest, and certain chiefs of the divisions, for their family divisions, and all of them designated by their names; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
16 Foi esse, portanto, o plano que seguiram. Esdras escolheu líderes para representarem suas famílias e designou cada representante por nome. No dia 29 de dezembro, os líderes se reuniram para tratar da questão.
17 And they made an end with all, with the men that had brought home strange wives, not before the first day of the first month.
17 Assim, em 27 de março, o primeiro dia do novo ano, haviam terminado de resolver todos os casos de homens que tinham se casado com mulheres estrangeiras.
18 And there were found among the sons of the priests that had brought home strange wives, namely, of the sons of Jeshua’ the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Ma’asseyah, and Eli’ezer, and Jarib, and Gedalyah.
18 Os sacerdotes que se casaram com mulheres estrangeiras foram: Da família de Jesua, filho de Jeozadaque,
19 And they gave their hand to put away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.
19 Assumiram o compromisso de divorciar-se de suas esposas, e cada um ofereceu um carneiro como sacrifício por causa de sua culpa.
20 And of the sons of Immer: Chanani, and Zebadyah.
20 Da família de Imer: Hanani e Zebadias.
21 And of the sons of Charim: Ma’asseyah, and Elijah, and Shema’yah, and Jechiel, and ‘Uzziyah.
21 Da família de Harim: Maaseias, Elias, Semaías, Jeiel e Uzias.
22 And of the sons of Pashchur: Elyo’enai, Ma’asseyah. Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and El’assah.
22 Da família de Pasur: Elioenai, Maaseias, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabade e Elasa.
23 Also of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shim’i, and Kelayan, the same is Kelita, Pethachyah, Judah, and Eli’ezer.
23 Os levitas culpados desse pecado foram: Jozabade, Simei, Quelaías (também chamado Quelita), Petaías, Judá e Eliézer.
24 And of the singers, Elyashib; and of the gate–keepers, Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.
24 O cantor culpado desse pecado foi: Eliasibe. Os porteiros culpados desse pecado foram: Salum, Telém e Uri.
25 And of Israel: Of the sons of Par’osh, Ramyah, and Yizziyah, and Malkiyah, and Miyamin, and El’azar, and Malkiyah, and Benayah.
25 Os outros israelitas culpados desse pecado foram: Da família de Parós: Ramias, Jezias, Malquias, Miamim, Eleazar, Malquias e Benaia.
26 And of the sons of ‘Elam; Matthanyah, Zecharyah, and Jechiel, and ‘Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliyah.
26 Da família de Elão: Matanias, Zacarias, Jeiel, Abdi, Jeremote e Elias.
27 And of the sons of Zatthu: Elyo’enai, Elyashib, Matthanyah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and ‘Aziza.
27 Da família de Zatu: Elioenai, Eliasibe, Matanias, Jeremote, Zabade e Aziza.
28 And of the sons of Bebai: Jehochanan, Chananyah, Zabbai, and ‘Athlai.
28 Da família de Bebai: Joanã, Hananias, Zabai e Atlai.
29 And of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and ‘Adayah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.
29 Da família de Bani: Mesulão, Maluque, Adaías, Jasube, Seal e Jeremote.
30 And of the sons of Pachath–moab: ‘Adna, and Kelal, Benayah, Ma’asseyah, Matthanyah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Menasseh.
30 Da família de Paate-Moabe: Adna, Quelal, Benaia, Maaseias, Matanias, Bezaleel, Binui e Manassés.
31 And of the sons of Charim: Eli’ezer, Yishiyah, Malkiyah, Shema’yah, Shim’on,
31 Da família de Harim: Eliézer, Issias, Malquias, Semaías, Simeão,
32 Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemaryah.
32 Benjamim, Maluque e Semarias.
33 Of the sons of Chashum: Matthenai, Matthathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Menasseh, and Shim’i.
33 Da família de Hasum: Matenai, Matatá, Zabade, Elifelete, Jeremai, Manassés e Simei.
34 Of the sons of Bani: Ma’adai, ‘Amram, and Uel,

35 Benayah, Bedeyah, Keluhu,

36 Vanyah, Meremoth, Elyashib,

38 And Bani, and Binnui, and Shim’i,
38 Da família de Binui: Simei,
39 And Shelemyah, and Nathan, and ‘Adayah,
39 Selemias, Natã, Adaías,
40 Machnadbai, Shashai, Sharai,
40 Macnadbai, Sasai, Sarai,
41 ‘Asar’el, and Shelemyahu, Shemaryah,
41 Azareel, Selemias, Semarias,
42 Shallum, Amaryah, and Joseph.
42 Salum, Amarias e José.
43 Of the sons of Nebo: Je’iel, Matthithyah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, Benayah.
43 Da família de Nebo: Jeiel, Matitias, Zabade, Zebina, Jadai, Joel e Benaia.
44 All these had taken strange wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
44 Todos esses homens se casaram com mulheres estrangeiras, e alguns tiveram filhos com essas esposas.
