1 Thus did the Lord Eternal show unto me: and, behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.
1 Eis o que me mostrou o Senhor: Vi uma cesta de frutos maduros.
2 And he said, What dost thou see, Amos? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me, The end is come for my people Israel: I will not farther indulge them any more.
2 Que vês tu, Amós?, perguntou-me ele. Uma cesta de frutos maduros, respondi. Ele replicou: Chegou o fim para o meu povo de Israel. Não continuarei a perdoá-lo.
3 And the songs of the temple shall become a wailing on that day, saith the Lord Eternal: many shall be the dead bodies; in every place shall men throw them down, saying, Be silent.
3 Naquele dia, os cantos do palácio serão gritos de aflição - oráculo do Senhor Javé. Uma multidão de cadáveres, lançados em qualquer parte. Silêncio!
4 Hear this, O ye that are greedy to swallow the needy, and to ruin the poor of the land,
4 Ouvi isto, vós que engolis o pobre, e fazeis perecer os humildes da terra,
5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell provision? and the sabbath, that we may open the cornwarehouses, making the ephah small, and increasing the shekel, and cheating with deceitful balances?
5 dizendo: Quando passará a lua nova, para vendermos o nosso trigo, e o sábado, para abrirmos os nossos celeiros, diminuindo a medida e aumentando o preço, e falseando a balança para defraudar?
6 That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and even sell the refuse of the corn?
6 {Compraremos os infelizes por dinheiro e os pobres por um par de sandálias.} Venderemos até o refugo do trigo.
7 Sworn hath the Lord by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will not forget to eternity all their works.
7 O Senhor jurou pelo orgulho de Jacó: não esquecerei jamais nenhum de seus atos.
8 Shall because of this the land not tremble, and mourn every one that dwelleth therein? and shall it not rise up like a stream wholly, and roll onward and sink again like the stream of Egypt?
8 Não, estremecerá a terra por causa disso? Não estará de luto toda a sua população? Todo o solo crescerá como o Nilo, subirá e baixará como o rio do Egito.
9 And it shall come to pass on that day, saith the Lord Eternal, that I will cause the sun to set at noon, and I will bring darkness over the earth on a bright day;
9 Acontecerá naquele dia - oráculo do Senhor Javé - que farei o sol se pôr ao meio-dia, e encherei a terra de trevas em pleno dia.
10 And I will change your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentations; and I will bring upon all loins sackcloth, and upon every head baldness; and I will cause the land to mourn as one doth for an only son, and its end to be as a day of bitter complaint.
10 Converterei vossas festas em luto, e vossos cânticos em elegias fúnebres. Porei o saco em volta de todos os rins, e a navalha em todas as cabeças. E farei {a terra} debulhar-se em pranto, como se chora um filho único, e seu porvir será um dia de amargura.
11 Behold, days are coming, saith the Lord Eternal, when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine for bread, nor a thirst for water, but to hear the words of the Lord:
11 Virão dias - oráculo do Senhor Javé - em que enviarei fome sobre a terra, não uma fome de pão, nem uma sede de água, mas {fome e sede} de ouvir a palavra do Senhor.
12 And they will wander about from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they will roam about to seek the word of the Lord; but they shall not find it.
12 Andarão errantes de um mar a outro, vaguearão do norte ao oriente; correrão por toda parte buscando a palavra do Senhor, e não a encontrarão.
13 On that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst;
13 Naqueles dias, desfalecerão de sede as belas jovens e os moços.
14 Those that swear by the guilt of Samaria, and say, As thy god liveth, O Dan; and, As liveth the worshipped idol of Beersheba, yea, they shall fall, and never rise up again.
14 Os que juram pelo pecado de Samaria e dizem: Pela vida do teu deus, Dã! e Pelo caminho de Bersabéia!, estes cairão e não mais se levantarão.
