1 Thus did the Lord Eternal show unto me: and, behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.
1 Assim o Senhor DEUS me mostrou; e eis aqui um cesto de frutos do verão.
2 And he said, What dost thou see, ‘Amos? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me, The end is come for my people Israel: I will not farther indulge them any more.
2 E ele disse: Amós, o que vês? E eu disse: um cesto de frutos do verão. Então disse-me o ­SENHOR: o fim chegou sobre o meu povo Israel; eu não passarei por ele novamente.
3 And the songs of the temple shall become a wailing on that day, saith the Lord Eternal: many shall be the dead bodies; in every place shall men throw them down, saying, Be silent.
3 E as canções do templo devem ser uivarias naquele dia, diz o Senhor DEUS. Haverá muitos cadáveres em todos os lugares; eles serão lançados fora em silêncio.
4 Hear this, O ye that are greedy to swallow the needy, and to ruin the poor of the land,
4 Ouvi isto, vós que pisais os necessitados, que fazeis os pobres da terra fracassarem,
5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell provision? and the sabbath, that we may open the corn–warehouses, making the ephah small, and increasing the shekel, and cheating with deceitful balances?
5 dizendo: Quando passará a lua nova, para vendermos o grão? E o shabat, para que possamos preparar o trigo, diminuindo a medida, e aumentando o preço, e falsificando as balanças de forma enganosa?
6 That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and even sell the refuse of the corn?
6 Para que possamos comprar os pobres por prata, e os necessitados por um par de sandálias; sim, e vendermos os restos do trigo?
7 Sworn hath the Lord by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will not forget to eternity all their works.
7 O ­SENHOR jurou pela excelência de Jacó: Certamente jamais me esquecerei de nenhuma de suas obras.
8 Shall because of this the land not tremble, and mourn every one that dwelleth therein? and shall it not rise up like a stream wholly, and roll onward and sink again like the stream of Egypt?
8 Não estremecerá a terra por causa disso, e não lamentará todo aquele que nela habita? E levantar-se-á toda ela com uma inundação, e será agitada e afogada, como pela inundação do Egito.
9 And it shall come to pass on that day, saith the Lord Eternal, that I will cause the sun to set at noon, and I will bring darkness over the earth on a bright day;
9 E acontecerá que, naquele dia, diz o Senhor DEUS: eu farei com que o sol se ponha ao meio-dia, e escurecerei a terra em plena luz do dia;
10 And I will change your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentations; and I will bring upon all loins sackcloth, and upon every head baldness; and I will cause the land to mourn as one doth for an only son, and its end to be as a day of bitter complaint.
10 e tornarei as suas festas em luto, e todos os seus cânticos em lamentações; e colocarei pano de saco sobre todos os lombos, e calvície sobre toda cabeça; e farei que isso seja como luto por um filho único, e o seu fim como um dia de amarguras.
11 Behold, days are coming, saith the Lord Eternal, when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine for bread, nor a thirst for water, but to hear the words of the Lord:
11 Eis que vêm dias, diz o Senhor DEUS, em que enviarei fome sobre a terra; não fome de pão, nem sede de água, mas de ouvir as palavras do ­SENHOR;
12 And they will wander about from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they will roam about to seek the word of the Lord; but they shall not find it.
12 e eles vaguearão de um mar até o outro, e do norte até ao oriente; eles correrão para lá e para cá para buscar a palavra do ­SENHOR, e não a encontrarão.
13 On that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst;
13 Naquele dia, as belas virgens e os jovens desmaiarão de sede.
14 Those that swear by the guilt of Samaria, and say, As thy god liveth, O Dan; and, As liveth the worshipped idol of Beer–sheba’, ––yea, they shall fall, and never rise up again.
14 Aqueles que juram pelo pecado de Samaria, dizendo: o teu deus, ó Dã, vive; a conduta de Berseba vive; até mesmos esses cairão, e nunca mais se levantarão.
