1 Thus did the Lord Eternal show unto me: and, behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.
1 O Senhor Deus me fez ver isto: eis aqui um cesto de frutos de verão.
2 And he said, What dost thou see, Amos? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me, The end is come for my people Israel: I will not farther indulge them any more.
2 E perguntou: Que vês, Amós? E eu respondi: Um cesto de frutos de verão. Então, o Senhor me disse: Chegou o fim para o meu povo de Israel; e jamais passarei por ele.
3 And the songs of the temple shall become a wailing on that day, saith the Lord Eternal: many shall be the dead bodies; in every place shall men throw them down, saying, Be silent.
3 Mas os cânticos do templo, naquele dia, serão uivos, diz o Senhor Deus; multiplicar-se-ão os cadáveres; em todos os lugares, serão lançados fora. Silêncio!
4 Hear this, O ye that are greedy to swallow the needy, and to ruin the poor of the land,
4 Ouvi isto, vós que tendes gana contra o necessitado e destruís os miseráveis da terra,
5 Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell provision? and the sabbath, that we may open the cornwarehouses, making the ephah small, and increasing the shekel, and cheating with deceitful balances?
5 dizendo: Quando passará a Festa da Lua Nova, para vendermos os cereais? E o sábado, para abrirmos os celeiros de trigo, diminuindo o efa, e aumentando o siclo, e procedendo dolosamente com balanças enganadoras,
6 That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and even sell the refuse of the corn?
6 para comprarmos os pobres por dinheiro e os necessitados por um par de sandálias e vendermos o refugo do trigo?
7 Sworn hath the Lord by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will not forget to eternity all their works.
7 Jurou o Senhor pela glória de Jacó: Eu não me esquecerei de todas as suas obras, para sempre!
8 Shall because of this the land not tremble, and mourn every one that dwelleth therein? and shall it not rise up like a stream wholly, and roll onward and sink again like the stream of Egypt?
8 Por causa disto, não estremecerá a terra? E não se enlutará todo aquele que habita nela? Certamente, levantar-se-á toda como o Nilo, será agitada e abaixará como o rio do Egito.
9 And it shall come to pass on that day, saith the Lord Eternal, that I will cause the sun to set at noon, and I will bring darkness over the earth on a bright day;
9 Sucederá que, naquele dia, diz o Senhor Deus, farei que o sol se ponha ao meio-dia e entenebrecerei a terra em dia claro.
10 And I will change your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentations; and I will bring upon all loins sackcloth, and upon every head baldness; and I will cause the land to mourn as one doth for an only son, and its end to be as a day of bitter complaint.
10 Converterei as vossas festas em luto e todos os vossos cânticos em lamentações; porei pano de saco sobre todos os lombos e calva sobre toda cabeça; e farei que isso seja como luto por filho único, luto cujo fim será como dia de amarguras.
11 Behold, days are coming, saith the Lord Eternal, when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine for bread, nor a thirst for water, but to hear the words of the Lord:
11 Eis que vêm dias, diz o Senhor Deus, em que enviarei fome sobre a terra, não de pão, nem sede de água, mas de ouvir as palavras do Senhor .
12 And they will wander about from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they will roam about to seek the word of the Lord; but they shall not find it.
12 Andarão de mar a mar e do Norte até ao Oriente; correrão por toda parte, procurando a palavra do Senhor , e não a acharão.
13 On that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst;
13 Naquele dia, as virgens formosas e os jovens desmaiarão de sede,
14 Those that swear by the guilt of Samaria, and say, As thy god liveth, O Dan; and, As liveth the worshipped idol of Beersheba, yea, they shall fall, and never rise up again.
14 os que, agora, juram pelo ídolo de Samaria e dizem: Como é certo viver o teu deus, ó Dã! E: Como é certo viver o culto de Berseba! Esses mesmos cairão e não se levantarão jamais.
