1 And it came to pass at that time|strong="H6256", that Judah|strong="H3063" went down|strong="H3381" from his brethren|strong="H0251", and turned|strong="H5186" in to a certain|strong="H0376" Adullamite|strong="H5726", whose name|strong="H8034" was Hirah|strong="H2437".
2 And Judah|strong="H3063" saw|strong="H7200" there a daughter|strong="H1323" of a certain|strong="H0376" Canaanite|strong="H3669", whose name|strong="H8034" was Shuah|strong="H7770"; and he took her|strong="H3947", and went in|strong="H0935" unto her.
3 And she conceived|strong="H2029", and bare|strong="H3205" a son|strong="H1121"; and he called|strong="H7121" his name|strong="H8034" Er|strong="H6147".
4 And she conceived|strong="H2029" again, and bare|strong="H3205" a son|strong="H1121"; and she called|strong="H7121" his name|strong="H8034" Onan|strong="H0209".
5 And she yet again conceived|strong="H3254", and bare|strong="H3205" a son|strong="H1121"; and called|strong="H7121" his name|strong="H8034" Shelah|strong="H7956": and he was at Chezib|strong="H3580", when she bare|strong="H3205" him.
6 And Judah|strong="H3063" took|strong="H3947" a wife|strong="H0802" for Er|strong="H6147" his firstborn|strong="H1060", whose name|strong="H8034" was Tamar|strong="H8559".
7 And Er|strong="H6147", Judah’s|strong="H3063" firstborn|strong="H1060", was wicked|strong="H7451" in the sight|strong="H5869" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* slew|strong="H4191" him.
8 And Judah|strong="H3063" said|strong="H0559" unto Onan|strong="H0209", Go in|strong="H0935" unto thy brother’s|strong="H0251" wife|strong="H0802", and marry|strong="H2992" her, and raise up|strong="H6965" seed|strong="H2233" to thy brother|strong="H0251".
9 And Onan|strong="H0209" knew|strong="H3045" that the seed|strong="H2233" should not be his; and it came to pass, when|strong="H0518" he went in|strong="H0935" unto his brother’s|strong="H0251" wife|strong="H0802", that he spilled|strong="H7843" it on the ground|strong="H0776", lest|strong="H1115" that he should give|strong="H5414" seed|strong="H2233" to his brother|strong="H0251".
10 And the thing which|strong="H0834" he did|strong="H6213" displeased|strong="H3415" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: wherefore he slew|strong="H4191" him also.
11 Then said|strong="H0559" Judah|strong="H3063" to Tamar|strong="H8559" his daughter in law|strong="H3618", Remain|strong="H3427" a widow|strong="H0490" at thy father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004", till Shelah|strong="H7956" my son|strong="H1121" be grown|strong="H1431": for he said|strong="H0559", Lest peradventure he die|strong="H4191" also, as his brethren|strong="H0251" did. And Tamar|strong="H8559" went|strong="H3212" and dwelt|strong="H3427" in her father’s|strong="H0001" house|strong="H1004".
12 And in process|strong="H7235" of time|strong="H3117" the daughter|strong="H1323" of Shuah|strong="H7770" Judah’s|strong="H3063" wife|strong="H0802" died|strong="H4191"; and Judah|strong="H3063" was comforted|strong="H5162", and went up|strong="H5927" unto his sheepshearers|strong="H1494" to Timnath|strong="H8553", he and his friend|strong="H7453" Hirah|strong="H2437" the Adullamite|strong="H5726".
13 And it was told|strong="H5046" Tamar|strong="H8559", saying|strong="H0559", Behold thy father in law|strong="H2524" goeth up|strong="H5927" to Timnath|strong="H8553" to shear|strong="H1494" his sheep|strong="H6629".
14 And she put|strong="H5493" her widow’s|strong="H0491" garments|strong="H0899" off|strong="H5493" from her, and covered her|strong="H3680" with a vail|strong="H6809", and wrapped herself|strong="H5968", and sat in|strong="H3427" an open|strong="H5869" place|strong="H6607", which is by the way|strong="H1870" to Timnath|strong="H8553"; for she saw|strong="H7200" that Shelah|strong="H7956" was grown|strong="H1431", and she was not given|strong="H5414" unto him to wife|strong="H0802".
15 When Judah|strong="H3063" saw her|strong="H7200", he thought|strong="H2803" her to be an harlot|strong="H2181"; because she had covered|strong="H3680" her face|strong="H6440".
16 And he turned|strong="H5186" unto her by the way|strong="H1870", and said|strong="H0559", Go to|strong="H3051", I pray thee, let me come in|strong="H0935" unto thee; (for he knew|strong="H3045" not that she was his daughter in law|strong="H3618".) And she said|strong="H0559", What wilt thou give|strong="H5414" me, that thou mayest come in|strong="H0935" unto me?
17 And he said|strong="H0559", I will send|strong="H7971" thee a kid|strong="H5795" from the flock|strong="H6629". And she said|strong="H0559", Wilt thou give|strong="H5414" me a pledge|strong="H6162", till thou send|strong="H7971" it?
18 And he said|strong="H0559", What|strong="H0834" pledge|strong="H6162" shall I give|strong="H5414" thee? And she said|strong="H0559", Thy signet|strong="H2368", and thy bracelets|strong="H6616", and thy staff|strong="H4294" that is in thine hand|strong="H3027". And he gave|strong="H5414" it her, and came in|strong="H0935" unto her, and she conceived|strong="H2029" by him.
19 And she arose|strong="H6965", and went away|strong="H3212", and laid by|strong="H5493" her vail|strong="H6809" from her, and put on|strong="H3847" the garments|strong="H0899" of her widowhood|strong="H0491".
20 And Judah|strong="H3063" sent|strong="H7971" the kid|strong="H1423" by the hand|strong="H3027" of his friend|strong="H7453" the Adullamite|strong="H5726", to receive|strong="H3947" his pledge|strong="H6162" from the woman’s|strong="H0802" hand|strong="H3027": but he found her|strong="H4672" not.
21 Then he asked|strong="H7592" the men|strong="H0582" of that place|strong="H4725", saying|strong="H0559", Where is the harlot|strong="H6948", that was openly|strong="H5869" by the way side|strong="H1870"? And they said|strong="H0559", There was no harlot|strong="H6948" in this|strong="H2088" place.
22 And he returned|strong="H7725" to Judah|strong="H3063", and said|strong="H0559", I cannot|strong="H3808" find|strong="H4672" her; and also the men|strong="H0582" of the place|strong="H4725" said|strong="H0559", that there was no harlot|strong="H6948" in this place.
23 And Judah|strong="H3063" said|strong="H0559", Let her take|strong="H3947" it to her, lest we be shamed|strong="H0937": behold, I sent|strong="H7971" this kid|strong="H1423", and thou hast not found|strong="H4672" her.
24 And it came to pass about three|strong="H7969" months|strong="H2320" after, that it was told|strong="H5046" Judah|strong="H3063", saying|strong="H0559", Tamar|strong="H8559" thy daughter in law|strong="H3618" hath played the harlot|strong="H2181"; and also, behold, she is with child|strong="H2030" by whoredom|strong="H2183". And Judah|strong="H3063" said|strong="H0559", Bring her forth|strong="H3318", and let her be burnt|strong="H8313".
25 When she was brought forth|strong="H3318", she sent|strong="H7971" to her father in law|strong="H2524", saying|strong="H0559", By the man|strong="H0376", whose these are, am I with child|strong="H2030": and she said|strong="H0559", Discern|strong="H5234", I pray thee, whose are these, the signet|strong="H2858", and bracelets|strong="H6616", and staff|strong="H4294".
26 And Judah|strong="H3063" acknowledged|strong="H5234" them, and said|strong="H0559", She hath been more righteous|strong="H6663" than I; because that I gave|strong="H5414" her not to Shelah|strong="H7956" my son|strong="H1121". And he knew her|strong="H3045" again|strong="H3254" no more.
27 And it came to pass in the time|strong="H6256" of her travail|strong="H3205", that, behold, twins|strong="H8380" were in her womb|strong="H0990".
28 And it came to pass, when she travailed|strong="H3205", that the one put out|strong="H5414" his hand|strong="H3027": and the midwife|strong="H3205" took|strong="H3947" and bound|strong="H7194" upon his hand|strong="H3027" a scarlet thread|strong="H8144", saying|strong="H0559", This came out|strong="H3318" first|strong="H7223".
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back|strong="H7725" his hand|strong="H3027", that, behold, his brother|strong="H0251" came out|strong="H3318": and she said|strong="H0559", How hast thou broken forth|strong="H6555"? this breach|strong="H6556" be upon thee: therefore his name|strong="H8034" was called|strong="H7121" Pharez|strong="H6557".
30 And afterward|strong="H0310" came out|strong="H3318" his brother|strong="H0251", that had the scarlet thread|strong="H8144" upon his hand|strong="H3027": and his name|strong="H8034" was called|strong="H7121" Zarah|strong="H2226".
