Atos 17

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

Now|strong="G1161" when they had passed through|strong="G1353" Amphipolis|strong="G0295" and|strong="G2532" Apollonia|strong="G0624", they came|strong="G2064" to|strong="G1519" Thessalonica|strong="G2332", where|strong="G3699" was|strong="G2258" a synagogue|strong="G4864" of the Jews|strong="G2453":

And|strong="G1161" Paul|strong="G3972", as|strong="G2596" his manner was|strong="G1486", went in|strong="G1525" unto|strong="G4314" them|strong="G0846", and|strong="G2532" three|strong="G5140" sabbath days|strong="G4521" reasoned|strong="G1256" with them|strong="G0846" out of|strong="G0575" the scriptures|strong="G1124",

Opening|strong="G1272" and|strong="G2532" alleging|strong="G3908", that|strong="G3754" Christ|strong="G5547" must needs|strong="G1163" have suffered|strong="G3958", and|strong="G2532" risen again|strong="G0450" from|strong="G1537" the dead|strong="G3498"; and|strong="G2532" that|strong="G3754" this|strong="G3778" Jesus|strong="G2424", whom|strong="G3739" I|strong="G1473" preach|strong="G2605" unto you|strong="G5213", is|strong="G2076" Christ|strong="G5547".

And|strong="G2532" some|strong="G5100" of|strong="G1537" them|strong="G0846" believed|strong="G3982", and|strong="G2532" consorted|strong="G4345" with Paul|strong="G3972" and|strong="G2532" Silas|strong="G4609"; and|strong="G5037" of the devout|strong="G4576" Greeks|strong="G1672" a great|strong="G4183" multitude|strong="G4128", and|strong="G5037" of the chief|strong="G4413" women|strong="G1135" not|strong="G3756" a few|strong="G3641".

But|strong="G1161" the Jews|strong="G2453" which|strong="G3588" believed not|strong="G0544", moved with envy|strong="G2206", took unto them|strong="G4355" certain|strong="G5100" lewd|strong="G4190" fellows|strong="G0435" of the baser sort|strong="G0060", and|strong="G2532" gathered a company|strong="G3792", and set all|strong="G2350" the city|strong="G4172" on an uproar|strong="G2350", and|strong="G5037" assaulted|strong="G2186" the house|strong="G3614" of Jason|strong="G2394", and sought|strong="G2212" to bring|strong="G0071" them|strong="G0846" out|strong="G0071" to|strong="G1519" the people|strong="G1218".

And|strong="G1161" when they found|strong="G2147" them|strong="G0846" not|strong="G3361", they drew|strong="G4951" Jason|strong="G2394" and|strong="G2532" certain|strong="G5100" brethren|strong="G0080" unto|strong="G1909" the rulers of the city|strong="G4173", crying|strong="G0994", These|strong="G3778" that|strong="G3754" have turned|strong="G0387" the world|strong="G3625" upside down|strong="G0387" are come|strong="G3918" hither|strong="G1759" also|strong="G2532";

Whom|strong="G3739" Jason|strong="G2394" hath received|strong="G5264": and|strong="G2532" these|strong="G3778" all|strong="G3956" do|strong="G4238" contrary|strong="G0561" to the decrees|strong="G1378" of Cæsar|strong="G2541", saying|strong="G3004" that there is|strong="G1511" another|strong="G2087" king|strong="G0935", one Jesus|strong="G2424".

And|strong="G1161" they troubled|strong="G5015" the people|strong="G3793" and|strong="G2532" the rulers of the city|strong="G4173", when they heard|strong="G0191" these things|strong="G5023".

And|strong="G2532" when they had taken|strong="G2983" security|strong="G2425" of|strong="G3844" Jason|strong="G2394", and|strong="G2532" of the other|strong="G3062", they let|strong="G0630" them|strong="G0846" go|strong="G0630".

And|strong="G1161" the brethren|strong="G0080" immediately|strong="G2112" sent away|strong="G1599" Paul|strong="G3972" and|strong="G2532" Silas|strong="G4609" by|strong="G1223" night|strong="G3571" unto|strong="G1519" Berea|strong="G0960": who|strong="G3748" coming|strong="G3854" thither went|strong="G0549" into|strong="G1519" the synagogue|strong="G4864" of the Jews|strong="G2453".

These|strong="G3778" were|strong="G2258" more noble|strong="G2104" than those|strong="G3588" in|strong="G1722" Thessalonica|strong="G2332", in that|strong="G3748" they received|strong="G1209" the word|strong="G3056" with|strong="G3326" all|strong="G3956" readiness of mind|strong="G4288", and searched|strong="G0350" the scriptures|strong="G1124" daily|strong="G2250", whether|strong="G1487" those things|strong="G5023" were|strong="G2192" so|strong="G3779".

Therefore|strong="G3767" many|strong="G4183" of|strong="G1537" them|strong="G0846" believed|strong="G4100"; also|strong="G2532" of honourable|strong="G2158" women|strong="G1135" which were|strong="G3588" Greeks|strong="G1674", and|strong="G2532" of men|strong="G0435", not|strong="G3756" a few|strong="G3641".

But|strong="G1161" when|strong="G5613" the Jews|strong="G2453" of|strong="G0575" Thessalonica|strong="G2332" had knowledge|strong="G1097" that|strong="G3754" the word|strong="G3056" of God|strong="G2316" was preached|strong="G2605" of|strong="G5259" Paul|strong="G3972" at|strong="G1722" Berea|strong="G0960", they came|strong="G2064" thither also|strong="G2546", and|strong="G2532" stirred up|strong="G4531" the people|strong="G3793".

And|strong="G1161" then|strong="G5119" immediately|strong="G2112" the brethren|strong="G0080" sent away|strong="G1821" Paul|strong="G3972" to go|strong="G4198" as it were|strong="G5613" to|strong="G1909" the sea|strong="G2281": but|strong="G1161" Silas|strong="G4609" and|strong="G2532" Timotheus|strong="G5095" abode|strong="G5278" there|strong="G1563" still|strong="G5278".

And|strong="G1161" they|strong="G3588" that conducted|strong="G2525" Paul|strong="G3972" brought|strong="G0071" him|strong="G0846" unto|strong="G2193" Athens|strong="G0116": and|strong="G2532" receiving|strong="G2983" a commandment|strong="G1785" unto|strong="G4314" Silas|strong="G4609" and|strong="G2532" Timotheus|strong="G5095" for|strong="G2443" to come|strong="G2064" to|strong="G4314" him|strong="G0846" with|strong="G5613" all speed|strong="G5033", they departed|strong="G1826".

Now|strong="G1161" while Paul|strong="G3972" waited|strong="G1551" for them|strong="G0846" at|strong="G1722" Athens|strong="G0116", his|strong="G0846" spirit|strong="G4151" was stirred|strong="G3947" in|strong="G1722" him|strong="G0846", when|strong="G5607" he saw|strong="G2334" the city|strong="G4172" wholly given to idolatry|strong="G2712".

Therefore|strong="G3767" disputed he|strong="G1256" in|strong="G1722" the synagogue|strong="G4864" with the Jews|strong="G2453", and|strong="G2532" with the devout persons|strong="G4576", and|strong="G2532" in|strong="G1722" the market|strong="G0058" daily|strong="G2250" with|strong="G4314" them that|strong="G3588" met with him|strong="G3909".

Then|strong="G1161" certain|strong="G5100" philosophers|strong="G5386" of the Epicureans|strong="G1946", and|strong="G2532" of the Stoicks|strong="G4770", encountered|strong="G4820" him|strong="G0846". And|strong="G2532" some|strong="G5100" said|strong="G3004", What|strong="G5101" will|strong="G2309" this|strong="G3778" babbler|strong="G4691" say|strong="G3004"? other some|strong="G3588", He seemeth|strong="G1380" to be|strong="G1511" a setter forth|strong="G2604" of strange|strong="G3581" gods|strong="G1140": because|strong="G3754" he preached|strong="G2097" unto them|strong="G0846" Jesus|strong="G2424", and|strong="G2532" the resurrection|strong="G0386".

And|strong="G5037" they took|strong="G1949" him|strong="G0846", and brought him|strong="G0071" unto|strong="G1909" Areopagus|strong="G0697", saying|strong="G3004", May|strong="G1410" we know|strong="G1097" what|strong="G5101" this|strong="G3778" new|strong="G2537" doctrine|strong="G1322", whereof|strong="G5259" thou|strong="G4675" speakest|strong="G2980", is?

For|strong="G1063" thou bringest|strong="G1533" certain|strong="G5100" strange|strong="G3579" things to|strong="G1519" our|strong="G2257" ears|strong="G0189": we would|strong="G1014" know|strong="G1097" therefore|strong="G3767" what|strong="G5101" these things|strong="G5023" mean|strong="G2309".

(For|strong="G1161" all|strong="G3956" the Athenians|strong="G0117" and|strong="G2532" strangers|strong="G3581" which|strong="G3588" were there|strong="G1927" spent their time|strong="G2119" in|strong="G1519" nothing|strong="G3762" else|strong="G2087", but either|strong="G2228" to tell|strong="G3004", or|strong="G2532" to hear|strong="G0191" some|strong="G5100" new thing|strong="G2537".)

Then|strong="G1161" Paul|strong="G3972" stood|strong="G2476" in|strong="G1722" the midst|strong="G3319" of Mars’|strong="G0697" hill|strong="G0697", and said|strong="G5346", Ye men|strong="G0435" of Athens|strong="G0117", I perceive|strong="G2334" that in|strong="G2596" all things|strong="G3956" ye|strong="G5209" are|strong="G5613" too superstitious|strong="G1174".

For|strong="G1063" as I passed by|strong="G1330", and|strong="G2532" beheld|strong="G0333" your|strong="G5216" devotions|strong="G4574", I found|strong="G2147" an altar|strong="G1041" with|strong="G1722" this|strong="G3739" inscription|strong="G1924", TO THE UNKNOWN|strong="G0057" GOD|strong="G2316". Whom|strong="G3739" therefore|strong="G3767" ye ignorantly|strong="G0050" worship|strong="G2151", him|strong="G5126" declare|strong="G2605" I|strong="G1473" unto you|strong="G5213".

God|strong="G2316" that made|strong="G4160" the world|strong="G2889" and|strong="G2532" all things|strong="G3956" therein|strong="G0846", seeing that he|strong="G3778" is|strong="G5225" Lord|strong="G2962" of heaven|strong="G3772" and|strong="G2532" earth|strong="G1093", dwelleth|strong="G2730" not|strong="G3756" in|strong="G1722" temples|strong="G3485" made with hands|strong="G5499";

Neither|strong="G3761" is worshipped|strong="G2323" with|strong="G5259" men’s|strong="G0444" hands|strong="G5495", as though he needed|strong="G4326" any thing|strong="G5100", seeing he|strong="G0846" giveth|strong="G1325" to all|strong="G3956" life|strong="G2222", and|strong="G2532" breath|strong="G4157", and|strong="G2596" all things|strong="G3956";

And|strong="G5037" hath made|strong="G4160" of|strong="G1537" one|strong="G1520" blood|strong="G0129" all|strong="G3956" nations|strong="G1484" of men|strong="G0444" for to dwell|strong="G2730" on|strong="G1909" all|strong="G3956" the face|strong="G4383" of the earth|strong="G1093", and hath determined|strong="G3724" the times|strong="G2540" before appointed|strong="G4384", and|strong="G2532" the bounds|strong="G3734" of their|strong="G0846" habitation|strong="G2733";

That they should seek|strong="G2212" the Lord|strong="G2962", if|strong="G1487" haply|strong="G1065" they might feel after|strong="G5584" him|strong="G0846", and|strong="G2532" find|strong="G2147" him|strong="G0846", though|strong="G2544" he be|strong="G5225" not|strong="G3756" far|strong="G3112" from|strong="G0575" every|strong="G1538" one|strong="G1520" of us|strong="G2257":

For|strong="G1063" in|strong="G1722" him|strong="G0846" we live|strong="G2198", and|strong="G2532" move|strong="G2795", and|strong="G2532" have our being|strong="G2070"; as|strong="G5613" certain|strong="G5100" also|strong="G2532" of|strong="G2596" your own|strong="G5209" poets|strong="G4163" have said|strong="G2046", For|strong="G1063" we are|strong="G2070" also|strong="G2532" his offspring|strong="G1085".

Forasmuch then|strong="G3767" as we are|strong="G5225" the offspring|strong="G1085" of God|strong="G2316", we ought|strong="G3784" not|strong="G3756" to think that|strong="G3543" the Godhead|strong="G2304" is|strong="G1511" like unto|strong="G3664" gold|strong="G5557", or|strong="G2228" silver|strong="G0696", or|strong="G2228" stone|strong="G3037", graven|strong="G5480" by art|strong="G5078" and|strong="G2532" man’s|strong="G0444" device|strong="G1761".

And|strong="G3767" the times|strong="G5550" of this ignorance|strong="G0052" God|strong="G2316" winked at|strong="G5237"; but|strong="G3588" now|strong="G3568" commandeth|strong="G3853" all|strong="G3956" men|strong="G0444" every where|strong="G3837" to repent|strong="G3340":

Because|strong="G1360" he hath appointed|strong="G2476" a day|strong="G2250", in|strong="G1722" the which|strong="G3739" he will|strong="G3195" judge|strong="G2919" the world|strong="G3625" in|strong="G1722" righteousness|strong="G1343" by|strong="G1722" that man|strong="G0435" whom|strong="G3739" he hath ordained|strong="G3724"; whereof he hath given|strong="G3930" assurance|strong="G4102" unto all|strong="G3956" men, in that he hath raised|strong="G0450" him|strong="G0846" from|strong="G1537" the dead|strong="G3498".

And|strong="G1161" when they heard|strong="G0191" of the resurrection|strong="G0386" of the dead|strong="G3498", some|strong="G3588" mocked|strong="G5512": and|strong="G1161" others|strong="G3588" said|strong="G2036", We will hear|strong="G0191" thee|strong="G4675" again|strong="G3825" of|strong="G4012" this|strong="G5127" matter.

So|strong="G3779" Paul|strong="G3972" departed|strong="G1831" from|strong="G1537" among|strong="G3319" them|strong="G0846".

Howbeit|strong="G1161" certain|strong="G5100" men|strong="G0435" clave|strong="G2853" unto him|strong="G0846", and believed|strong="G4100": among|strong="G1722" the which|strong="G3739" was Dionysius|strong="G1354" the Areopagite|strong="G0698", and|strong="G2532" a woman|strong="G1135" named|strong="G3686" Damaris|strong="G1152", and|strong="G2532" others|strong="G2087" with|strong="G4862" them|strong="G0846".
