2 Samuel 21

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

1 Then there was a famine|strong="H7458" in the days|strong="H3117" of David|strong="H1732" three|strong="H7969" years|strong="H8141", year|strong="H8141" after|strong="H0310" year|strong="H8141"; and David|strong="H1732" enquired|strong="H1245" of|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*. And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* answered|strong="H0559", It is for Saul|strong="H7586", and for his bloody|strong="H1818" house|strong="H1004", because he slew|strong="H4191" the Gibeonites|strong="H1393".

2 And the king|strong="H4428" called|strong="H7121" the Gibeonites|strong="H1393", and said|strong="H0559" unto them; (now the Gibeonites|strong="H1393" were not of the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478", but of the remnant|strong="H3499" of the Amorites|strong="H0567"; and the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" had sworn|strong="H7650" unto them: and Saul|strong="H7586" sought|strong="H1245" to slay|strong="H5221" them in his zeal|strong="H7065" to the children|strong="H1121" of Israel|strong="H3478" and Judah|strong="H3063".)

3 Wherefore David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto the Gibeonites|strong="H1393", What shall I do|strong="H6213" for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement|strong="H3722", that ye may bless|strong="H1288" the inheritance|strong="H5159" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*?

4 And the Gibeonites|strong="H1393" said|strong="H0559" unto him, We will have no silver|strong="H3701" nor gold|strong="H2091" of|strong="H5973" Saul|strong="H7586", nor of his house|strong="H1004"; neither for us shalt thou kill|strong="H4191" any man|strong="H0376" in Israel|strong="H3478". And he said|strong="H0559", What ye shall say|strong="H0559", that will I do|strong="H6213" for you.

5 And they answered|strong="H0559" the king|strong="H4428", The man|strong="H0376" that consumed|strong="H3615" us, and that devised|strong="H1819" against us that we should be destroyed|strong="H8045" from remaining|strong="H3320" in any of the coasts|strong="H1366" of Israel|strong="H3478",

6 Let seven|strong="H7651" men|strong="H0582" of his sons|strong="H1121" be delivered|strong="H5414" unto us, and we will hang them up|strong="H3363" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* in Gibeah|strong="H1390" of Saul|strong="H7586", whom the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* did choose|strong="H0972". And the king|strong="H4428" said|strong="H0559", I will give|strong="H5414" them.

7 But the king|strong="H4428" spared|strong="H2550" Mephibosheth|strong="H4648", the son|strong="H1121" of Jonathan|strong="H3083" the son|strong="H1121" of Saul|strong="H7586", because of the \+w LORD’s|strong="H3068"\+w* oath|strong="H7621" that was between them, between David|strong="H1732" and Jonathan|strong="H3083" the son|strong="H1121" of Saul|strong="H7586".

8 But the king|strong="H4428" took|strong="H3947" the two|strong="H8147" sons|strong="H1121" of Rizpah|strong="H7532" the daughter|strong="H1323" of Aiah|strong="H0345", whom she bare|strong="H3205" unto Saul|strong="H7586", Armoni|strong="H0764" and Mephibosheth|strong="H4648"; and the five|strong="H2568" sons|strong="H1121" of Michal|strong="H4324" the daughter|strong="H1323" of Saul|strong="H7586", whom she brought up|strong="H3205" for Adriel|strong="H5741" the son|strong="H1121" of Barzillai|strong="H1271" the Meholathite|strong="H4259":

9 And he delivered|strong="H5414" them into the hands|strong="H3027" of the Gibeonites|strong="H1393", and they hanged|strong="H3363" them in the hill|strong="H2022" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*: and they fell|strong="H5307" all seven|strong="H7651" together|strong="H3162", and were put to death|strong="H4191" in the days|strong="H3117" of harvest|strong="H7105", in the first|strong="H7223" days, in the beginning|strong="H8462" of barley|strong="H8184" harvest|strong="H7105".

10 And Rizpah|strong="H7532" the daughter|strong="H1323" of Aiah|strong="H0345" took|strong="H3947" sackcloth|strong="H8242", and spread|strong="H5186" it for her upon the rock|strong="H6697", from the beginning|strong="H8462" of harvest|strong="H7105" until water|strong="H4325" dropped|strong="H5413" upon them out of heaven|strong="H8064", and suffered|strong="H5414" neither the birds|strong="H5775" of the air|strong="H8064" to rest|strong="H5117" on them by day|strong="H3119", nor the beasts|strong="H2416" of the field|strong="H7704" by night|strong="H3915".

11 And it was told|strong="H5046" David|strong="H1732" what Rizpah|strong="H7532" the daughter|strong="H1323" of Aiah|strong="H0345", the concubine|strong="H6370" of Saul|strong="H7586", had done|strong="H6213".

12 And David|strong="H1732" went|strong="H3212" and took|strong="H3947" the bones|strong="H6106" of Saul|strong="H7586" and the bones|strong="H6106" of Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121" from the men|strong="H1167" of Jabesh-gilead|strong="H3003", which had stolen|strong="H1589" them from the street|strong="H7339" of Beth-shan|strong="H1052", where the Philistines|strong="H6430" had hanged|strong="H8511" them, when|strong="H3117" the Philistines|strong="H6430" had slain|strong="H5221" Saul|strong="H7586" in Gilboa|strong="H1533":

13 And he brought up|strong="H5927" from thence the bones|strong="H6106" of Saul|strong="H7586" and the bones|strong="H6106" of Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121"; and they gathered|strong="H0622" the bones|strong="H6106" of them that were hanged|strong="H3363".

14 And the bones|strong="H6106" of Saul|strong="H7586" and Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121" buried|strong="H6912" they in the country|strong="H0776" of Benjamin|strong="H1144" in Zelah|strong="H6762", in the sepulchre|strong="H6913" of Kish|strong="H7027" his father|strong="H0001": and they performed|strong="H6213" all that the king|strong="H4428" commanded|strong="H6680". And after|strong="H0310" that God|strong="H0430" was intreated|strong="H6279" for the land|strong="H0776".

15 Moreover the Philistines|strong="H6430" had yet war|strong="H4421" again with Israel|strong="H3478"; and David|strong="H1732" went down|strong="H3381", and his servants|strong="H5650" with him, and fought|strong="H3898" against the Philistines|strong="H6430": and David|strong="H1732" waxed faint|strong="H5774".

16 And Ishbi-benob|strong="H3430", which was of the sons|strong="H3211" of the giant|strong="H7497", the weight|strong="H4948" of whose spear|strong="H7013" weighed three|strong="H7969" hundred|strong="H3967" shekels of brass|strong="H5178" in weight|strong="H4948", he being girded|strong="H2296" with a new|strong="H2319" sword, thought|strong="H0559" to have slain|strong="H5221" David|strong="H1732".

17 But Abishai|strong="H0052" the son|strong="H1121" of Zeruiah|strong="H6870" succoured|strong="H5826" him, and smote|strong="H5221" the Philistine|strong="H6430", and killed|strong="H4191" him. Then the men|strong="H0582" of David|strong="H1732" sware|strong="H7650" unto him, saying|strong="H0559", Thou shalt go|strong="H3318" no more out with us to battle|strong="H4421", that thou quench|strong="H3518" not the light|strong="H5216" of Israel|strong="H3478".

18 And it came to pass after this|strong="H0310", that there was again a battle|strong="H4421" with the Philistines|strong="H6430" at Gob|strong="H1359": then Sibbechai|strong="H5444" the Hushathite|strong="H2843" slew|strong="H5221" Saph|strong="H5593", which was of the sons|strong="H3211" of the giant|strong="H7497".

19 And there was again a battle|strong="H4421" in Gob|strong="H1359" with the Philistines|strong="H6430", where Elhanan|strong="H0445" the son|strong="H1121" of Jaare-oregim|strong="H3296", a Beth-lehemite|strong="H1022", slew|strong="H5221" the brother of Goliath|strong="H1555" the Gittite|strong="H1663", the staff|strong="H6086" of whose spear|strong="H2595" was like a weaver’s|strong="H0707" beam|strong="H4500".

20 And there was yet a battle|strong="H4421" in Gath|strong="H1661", where was a man|strong="H0376" of great stature|strong="H4067", that had on every hand|strong="H3027" six|strong="H8337" fingers|strong="H0676", and on every foot|strong="H7272" six|strong="H8337" toes|strong="H0676", four|strong="H0702" and twenty|strong="H6242" in number|strong="H4557"; and he also was born|strong="H3205" to the giant|strong="H7497".

21 And when he defied|strong="H2778" Israel|strong="H3478", Jonathan|strong="H3083" the son|strong="H1121" of Shimea|strong="H8092" the brother|strong="H0251" of David|strong="H1732" slew|strong="H5221" him.

22 These four|strong="H0702" were born|strong="H3205" to the giant|strong="H7497" in Gath|strong="H1661", and fell|strong="H5307" by the hand|strong="H3027" of David|strong="H1732", and by the hand|strong="H3027" of his servants|strong="H5650".
