Samuel 8

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

And it came to pass, when Samuel|strong="H8050" was old|strong="H2204", that he made|strong="H7760" his sons|strong="H1121" judges|strong="H8199" over Israel|strong="H3478".

Now the name|strong="H8034" of his firstborn|strong="H1121" was Joel|strong="H3100"; and the name|strong="H8034" of his second|strong="H4932", Abiah|strong="H0029": they were judges|strong="H8199" in Beer-sheba|strong="H0884".

And his sons|strong="H1121" walked|strong="H1980" not in his ways|strong="H1870", but turned aside|strong="H5186" after|strong="H0310" lucre|strong="H1215", and took|strong="H3947" bribes|strong="H7810", and perverted|strong="H5186" judgment|strong="H4941".

Then all the elders|strong="H2205" of Israel|strong="H3478" gathered themselves together|strong="H6908", and came|strong="H0935" to Samuel|strong="H8050" unto Ramah|strong="H7414",

And said|strong="H0559" unto him, Behold, thou art old|strong="H2204", and thy sons|strong="H1121" walk|strong="H1980" not in thy ways|strong="H1870": now make|strong="H7760" us a king|strong="H4428" to judge|strong="H8199" us like all the nations|strong="H1471".

But the thing|strong="H1697" displeased|strong="H3415" Samuel|strong="H8050", when they said|strong="H0559", Give|strong="H5414" us a king|strong="H4428" to judge|strong="H8199" us. And Samuel|strong="H8050" prayed|strong="H6419" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559" unto Samuel|strong="H8050", Hearken|strong="H8085" unto the voice|strong="H6963" of the people|strong="H5971" in all that they say|strong="H0559" unto thee: for they have not rejected|strong="H3988" thee, but they have rejected|strong="H3988" me, that I should not reign|strong="H4427" over them.

According to all the works|strong="H4639" which they have done|strong="H6213" since the day|strong="H3117" that I brought them up|strong="H5927" out of Egypt|strong="H4714" even unto this day|strong="H3117", wherewith they have forsaken|strong="H5800" me, and served|strong="H5647" other|strong="H0312" gods|strong="H0430", so do|strong="H6213" they also unto thee.

Now therefore hearken|strong="H8085" unto their voice|strong="H6963": howbeit|strong="H0389" yet protest|strong="H5749" solemnly|strong="H5749" unto them, and shew|strong="H5046" them the manner|strong="H4941" of the king|strong="H4428" that shall reign|strong="H4427" over them.

And Samuel|strong="H8050" told|strong="H0559" all the words|strong="H1697" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* unto the people|strong="H5971" that asked|strong="H7592" of him a king|strong="H4428".

And he said|strong="H0559", This will be the manner|strong="H4941" of the king|strong="H4428" that shall reign|strong="H4427" over you: He will take|strong="H3947" your sons|strong="H1121", and appoint|strong="H7760" them for himself, for his chariots|strong="H4818", and to be his horsemen|strong="H6571"; and some shall run|strong="H7323" before|strong="H6440" his chariots|strong="H4818".

And he will appoint|strong="H7760" him captains|strong="H8269" over thousands|strong="H0505", and captains|strong="H8269" over fifties|strong="H2572"; and will set them to ear|strong="H2790" his ground|strong="H2758", and to reap|strong="H7114" his harvest|strong="H7105", and to make|strong="H6213" his instruments|strong="H3627" of war|strong="H4421", and instruments|strong="H3627" of his chariots|strong="H7393".

And he will take|strong="H3947" your daughters|strong="H1323" to be confectionaries|strong="H7548", and to be cooks|strong="H2879", and to be bakers|strong="H0644".

And he will take|strong="H3947" your fields|strong="H7704", and your vineyards|strong="H3754", and your oliveyards|strong="H2132", even the best|strong="H2896" of them, and give|strong="H5414" them to his servants|strong="H5650".

And he will take the tenth|strong="H6237" of your seed|strong="H2233", and of your vineyards|strong="H3754", and give|strong="H5414" to his officers|strong="H5631", and to his servants|strong="H5650".

And he will take|strong="H3947" your menservants|strong="H5650", and your maidservants|strong="H8198", and your goodliest|strong="H2896" young men|strong="H0970", and your asses|strong="H2543", and put|strong="H6213" them to his work|strong="H4399".

He will take the tenth|strong="H6237" of your sheep|strong="H6629": and ye shall be his servants|strong="H5650".

And ye shall cry out|strong="H2199" in that day|strong="H3117" because|strong="H6440" of your king|strong="H4428" which ye shall have chosen|strong="H0977" you; and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* will not hear|strong="H6030" you in that day|strong="H3117".

Nevertheless the people|strong="H5971" refused|strong="H3985" to obey|strong="H8085" the voice|strong="H6963" of Samuel|strong="H8050"; and they said|strong="H0559", Nay; but we will have a king|strong="H4428" over us;

That we also may be like all the nations|strong="H1471"; and that our king|strong="H4428" may judge|strong="H8199" us, and go out|strong="H3318" before|strong="H6440" us, and fight|strong="H3898" our battles|strong="H4421".

And Samuel|strong="H8050" heard|strong="H8085" all the words|strong="H1697" of the people|strong="H5971", and he rehearsed|strong="H1696" them in the ears|strong="H0241" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

And the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* said|strong="H0559" to Samuel|strong="H8050", Hearken|strong="H8085" unto their voice|strong="H6963", and make|strong="H4427" them a king|strong="H4428". And Samuel|strong="H8050" said|strong="H0559" unto the men|strong="H0582" of Israel|strong="H3478", Go|strong="H3212" ye every man|strong="H0376" unto his city|strong="H5892".
