1 And David|strong="H1732" fled|strong="H1272" from Naioth|strong="H5121" in Ramah|strong="H7414", and came|strong="H0935" and said|strong="H0559" before|strong="H6440" Jonathan|strong="H3083", What have I done|strong="H6213"? what is mine iniquity|strong="H5771"? and what is my sin|strong="H2403" before|strong="H6440" thy father|strong="H0001", that he seeketh|strong="H1245" my life|strong="H5315"?
2 And he said|strong="H0559" unto him, God forbid|strong="H2486"; thou shalt not die|strong="H4191": behold, my father|strong="H0001" will do|strong="H6213" nothing|strong="H1697" either great|strong="H1419" or small|strong="H6996", but that he will shew|strong="H1540" it me: and why should my father|strong="H0001" hide|strong="H5641" this thing|strong="H1697" from me? it is not so.
3 And David|strong="H1732" sware|strong="H7650" moreover, and said|strong="H0559", Thy father|strong="H0001" certainly|strong="H3045" knoweth|strong="H3045" that I have found|strong="H4672" grace|strong="H2580" in thine eyes|strong="H5869"; and he saith|strong="H0559", Let not Jonathan|strong="H3083" know|strong="H3045" this, lest he be grieved|strong="H6087": but truly|strong="H0199" as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416", and as thy soul|strong="H5315" liveth|strong="H2416", there is but a step|strong="H6587" between me and death|strong="H4194".
4 Then said|strong="H0559" Jonathan|strong="H3083" unto David|strong="H1732", Whatsoever thy soul|strong="H5315" desireth|strong="H0559", I will even do|strong="H6213" it for thee.
5 And David|strong="H1732" said|strong="H0559" unto Jonathan|strong="H3083", Behold, to morrow|strong="H4279" is the new moon|strong="H2320", and I should not fail|strong="H3427" to sit|strong="H3427" with the king|strong="H4428" at meat|strong="H0398": but let me go|strong="H7971", that I may hide|strong="H5641" myself in the field|strong="H7704" unto the third|strong="H7992" day at even|strong="H6153".
6 If thy father|strong="H0001" at all|strong="H6485" miss|strong="H6485" me, then say|strong="H0559", David|strong="H1732" earnestly|strong="H7592" asked|strong="H7592" leave of me that he might run|strong="H7323" to Beth-lehem|strong="H1035" his city|strong="H5892": for there is a yearly|strong="H3117" sacrifice|strong="H2077" there for all the family|strong="H4940".
7 If he say|strong="H0559" thus, It is well|strong="H2896"; thy servant|strong="H5650" shall have peace|strong="H7965": but if he be very|strong="H2734" wroth|strong="H2734", then be sure|strong="H3045" that evil|strong="H7451" is determined|strong="H3615" by him.
8 Therefore thou shalt deal|strong="H6213" kindly|strong="H2617" with thy servant|strong="H5650"; for thou hast brought|strong="H0935" thy servant|strong="H5650" into a covenant|strong="H1285" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* with thee: notwithstanding, if there be|strong="H3426" in me iniquity|strong="H5771", slay|strong="H4191" me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring|strong="H0935" me to thy father|strong="H0001"?
9 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" said|strong="H0559", Far be it from thee|strong="H2486": for if I knew|strong="H3045" certainly|strong="H3045" that evil|strong="H7451" were determined|strong="H3615" by my father|strong="H0001" to come|strong="H0935" upon thee, then would not I tell|strong="H5046" it thee?
10 Then said|strong="H0559" David|strong="H1732" to Jonathan|strong="H3083", Who shall tell|strong="H5046" me? or what if thy father|strong="H0001" answer|strong="H6030" thee roughly|strong="H7186"?
11 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", Come|strong="H3212", and let us go out|strong="H3318" into the field|strong="H7704". And they went out|strong="H3318" both|strong="H8147" of them into the field|strong="H7704".
12 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" said|strong="H0559" unto David|strong="H1732", O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478", when I have sounded|strong="H2713" my father|strong="H0001" about to morrow|strong="H4279" any time|strong="H6256", or the third|strong="H7992" day, and, behold, if there be good|strong="H2895" toward David|strong="H1732", and I then send|strong="H7971" not unto thee, and shew|strong="H1540" it thee;
13 The \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* do|strong="H6213" so|strong="H3541" and much more|strong="H3254" to Jonathan|strong="H3083": but if it please|strong="H3190" my father|strong="H0001" to do thee evil|strong="H7451", then I will shew|strong="H1540" it thee, and send thee away|strong="H7971", that thou mayest go|strong="H1980" in peace|strong="H7965": and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* be with thee, as he hath been with my father|strong="H0001".
14 And thou shalt not only while yet|strong="H0518" I live|strong="H2416" shew|strong="H6213" me the kindness|strong="H2617" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, that I die|strong="H4191" not:
15 But also thou shalt not cut off|strong="H3772" thy kindness|strong="H2617" from my house|strong="H1004" for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769": no, not when the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath cut off|strong="H3772" the enemies|strong="H0341" of David|strong="H1732" every one|strong="H0376" from the face|strong="H6440" of the earth|strong="H0127".
16 So Jonathan|strong="H3083" made|strong="H3772" a covenant with the house|strong="H1004" of David|strong="H1732", saying, Let the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* even require|strong="H1245" it at the hand|strong="H3027" of David’s|strong="H1732" enemies|strong="H0341".
17 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" caused David|strong="H1732" to swear|strong="H7650" again|strong="H3254", because he loved|strong="H0160" him: for he loved|strong="H0157" him as he loved|strong="H0160" his own soul|strong="H5315".
18 Then Jonathan|strong="H3083" said|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", To morrow|strong="H4279" is the new moon|strong="H2320": and thou shalt be missed|strong="H6485", because thy seat|strong="H4186" will be empty|strong="H6485".
19 And when thou hast stayed three days|strong="H8027", then thou shalt go down|strong="H3381" quickly|strong="H3966", and come|strong="H0935" to the place|strong="H4725" where thou didst hide|strong="H5641" thyself when|strong="H3117" the business|strong="H4639" was in hand, and shalt remain|strong="H3427" by|strong="H0681" the stone|strong="H0068" Ezel|strong="H0237".
20 And I will shoot|strong="H3384" three|strong="H7969" arrows|strong="H2671" on the side|strong="H6654" thereof, as though I shot|strong="H7971" at a mark|strong="H4307".
21 And, behold, I will send|strong="H7971" a lad|strong="H5288", saying, Go|strong="H3212", find out|strong="H4672" the arrows|strong="H2671". If I expressly|strong="H0559" say|strong="H0559" unto the lad|strong="H5288", Behold, the arrows|strong="H2671" are on this side of thee, take|strong="H3947" them; then come|strong="H0935" thou: for there is peace|strong="H7965" to thee, and no hurt|strong="H1697"; as the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* liveth|strong="H2416".
22 But if I say|strong="H0559" thus unto the young man|strong="H5958", Behold, the arrows|strong="H2671" are beyond|strong="H1973" thee; go thy way|strong="H3212": for the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath sent thee away|strong="H7971".
23 And as touching the matter|strong="H1697" which thou and I have spoken|strong="H1696" of, behold, the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* be between thee and me for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769".
24 So David|strong="H1732" hid|strong="H5641" himself in the field|strong="H7704": and when the new moon|strong="H2320" was come, the king|strong="H4428" sat him down|strong="H3427" to eat|strong="H0398" meat|strong="H3899".
25 And the king|strong="H4428" sat|strong="H3427" upon his seat|strong="H4186", as at other times|strong="H6471", even upon a seat|strong="H4186" by the wall|strong="H7023": and Jonathan|strong="H3083" arose|strong="H6965", and Abner|strong="H0074" sat|strong="H3427" by Saul’s|strong="H7586" side|strong="H6654", and David’s|strong="H1732" place|strong="H4725" was empty|strong="H6485".
26 Nevertheless Saul|strong="H7586" spake|strong="H1696" not any thing|strong="H3972" that day|strong="H3117": for he thought|strong="H0559", Something hath befallen|strong="H4745" him, he is not|strong="H1115" clean|strong="H2889"; surely he is not clean|strong="H2889".
27 And it came to pass on the morrow|strong="H4283", which was the second|strong="H8145" day of the month|strong="H2320", that David’s|strong="H1732" place|strong="H4725" was empty|strong="H6485": and Saul|strong="H7586" said|strong="H0559" unto Jonathan|strong="H3083" his son|strong="H1121", Wherefore cometh|strong="H0935" not the son|strong="H1121" of Jesse|strong="H3448" to meat|strong="H3899", neither yesterday|strong="H8543", nor to day|strong="H3117"?
28 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" answered|strong="H6030" Saul|strong="H7586", David|strong="H1732" earnestly|strong="H7592" asked|strong="H7592" leave of me|strong="H5978" to go to Beth-lehem|strong="H1035":
29 And he said|strong="H0559", Let me go|strong="H7971", I pray thee; for our family|strong="H4940" hath a sacrifice|strong="H2077" in the city|strong="H5892"; and my brother|strong="H0251", he hath commanded|strong="H6680" me to be there: and now, if I have found|strong="H4672" favour|strong="H2580" in thine eyes|strong="H5869", let me get away|strong="H4422", I pray thee, and see|strong="H7200" my brethren|strong="H0251". Therefore he cometh|strong="H0935" not unto the king’s|strong="H4428" table|strong="H7979".
30 Then Saul’s|strong="H7586" anger|strong="H0639" was kindled|strong="H2734" against Jonathan|strong="H3083", and he said|strong="H0559" unto him, Thou son|strong="H1121" of the perverse|strong="H5753" rebellious|strong="H4780" woman, do not I know|strong="H3045" that thou hast chosen|strong="H0977" the son|strong="H1121" of Jesse|strong="H3448" to thine own confusion|strong="H1322", and unto the confusion|strong="H1322" of thy mother’s|strong="H0517" nakedness|strong="H6172"?
31 For as long as|strong="H3117" the son|strong="H1121" of Jesse|strong="H3448" liveth|strong="H2425" upon the ground|strong="H0127", thou shalt not be established|strong="H3559", nor thy kingdom|strong="H4438". Wherefore now send|strong="H7971" and fetch|strong="H3947" him unto me, for he shall surely die|strong="H1121".
32 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" answered|strong="H6030" Saul|strong="H7586" his father|strong="H0001", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain|strong="H4191"? what hath he done|strong="H6213"?
33 And Saul|strong="H7586" cast|strong="H2904" a javelin|strong="H2595" at him to smite|strong="H5221" him: whereby Jonathan|strong="H3083" knew|strong="H3045" that it was determined|strong="H3617" of his father|strong="H0001" to slay|strong="H4191" David|strong="H1732".
34 So Jonathan|strong="H3083" arose|strong="H6965" from the table|strong="H7979" in fierce|strong="H2750" anger|strong="H0639", and did eat|strong="H0398" no meat|strong="H3899" the second|strong="H8145" day|strong="H3117" of the month|strong="H2320": for he was grieved|strong="H6087" for David|strong="H1732", because his father|strong="H0001" had done him shame|strong="H3637".
35 And it came to pass in the morning|strong="H1242", that Jonathan|strong="H3083" went out|strong="H3318" into the field|strong="H7704" at the time appointed|strong="H4150" with David|strong="H1732", and a little|strong="H6996" lad|strong="H5288" with him.
36 And he said|strong="H0559" unto his lad|strong="H5288", Run|strong="H7323", find out|strong="H4672" now the arrows|strong="H2671" which I shoot|strong="H3384". And as the lad|strong="H5288" ran|strong="H7323", he shot|strong="H3384" an arrow|strong="H2678" beyond|strong="H5674" him.
37 And when the lad|strong="H5288" was come|strong="H0935" to the place|strong="H4725" of the arrow|strong="H2678" which Jonathan|strong="H3083" had shot|strong="H3384", Jonathan|strong="H3083" cried|strong="H7121" after|strong="H0310" the lad|strong="H5288", and said|strong="H0559", Is not the arrow|strong="H2678" beyond|strong="H1973" thee?
38 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" cried|strong="H7121" after|strong="H0310" the lad|strong="H5288", Make speed|strong="H4120", haste|strong="H2363", stay|strong="H5975" not. And Jonathan’s|strong="H3083" lad|strong="H5288" gathered up|strong="H3950" the arrows|strong="H2671", and came|strong="H0935" to his master|strong="H0113".
39 But the lad|strong="H5288" knew|strong="H3045" not any thing|strong="H3972": only Jonathan|strong="H3083" and David|strong="H1732" knew|strong="H3045" the matter|strong="H1697".
40 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" gave|strong="H5414" his artillery|strong="H3627" unto his lad|strong="H5288", and said|strong="H0559" unto him, Go|strong="H3212", carry|strong="H0935" them to the city|strong="H5892".
41 And as soon as the lad|strong="H5288" was gone|strong="H0935", David|strong="H1732" arose|strong="H6965" out of a place toward|strong="H0681" the south|strong="H5045", and fell|strong="H5307" on his face|strong="H0639" to the ground|strong="H0776", and bowed|strong="H7812" himself three|strong="H7969" times|strong="H6471": and they kissed|strong="H5401" one|strong="H0376" another|strong="H7453", and wept|strong="H1058" one|strong="H0376" with another|strong="H7453", until David|strong="H1732" exceeded|strong="H1431".
42 And Jonathan|strong="H3083" said|strong="H0559" to David|strong="H1732", Go|strong="H3212" in peace|strong="H7965", forasmuch as we have sworn|strong="H7650" both|strong="H8147" of us in the name|strong="H8034" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, saying|strong="H0559", The \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* be between me and thee, and between my seed|strong="H2233" and thy seed|strong="H2233" for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769". And he arose|strong="H6965" and departed|strong="H3212": and Jonathan|strong="H3083" went|strong="H0935" into the city|strong="H5892".
