Samuel 1

King James (Authorized) Version (ENG-KJV2006)

Now there was a certain|strong="H0259" man|strong="H0376" of Ramathaim-zophim|strong="H7436", of mount|strong="H2022" Ephraim|strong="H0669", and his name|strong="H8034" was Elkanah|strong="H0511", the son|strong="H1121" of Jeroham|strong="H3395", the son|strong="H1121" of Elihu|strong="H0453", the son|strong="H1121" of Tohu|strong="H8459", the son|strong="H1121" of Zuph|strong="H6689", an Ephrathite|strong="H0673":

And he had two|strong="H8147" wives|strong="H0802"; the name|strong="H8034" of the one|strong="H0259" was Hannah|strong="H2584", and the name|strong="H8034" of the other|strong="H8145" Peninnah|strong="H6444": and Peninnah|strong="H6444" had children|strong="H3206", but Hannah|strong="H2584" had no children|strong="H3206".

And this|strong="H1931" man|strong="H0376" went up|strong="H5927" out of his city|strong="H5892" yearly|strong="H3117" to worship|strong="H7812" and to sacrifice|strong="H2076" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* of hosts|strong="H6635" in Shiloh|strong="H7887". And the two|strong="H8147" sons|strong="H1121" of Eli|strong="H5941", Hophni|strong="H2652" and Phinehas|strong="H6372", the priests|strong="H3548" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, were there.

And when the time|strong="H3117" was that Elkanah|strong="H0511" offered|strong="H2076", he gave|strong="H5414" to Peninnah|strong="H6444" his wife|strong="H0802", and to all her sons|strong="H1121" and her daughters|strong="H1323", portions|strong="H4490":

But unto Hannah|strong="H2584" he gave|strong="H5414" a|strong="H0259" worthy|strong="H0639" portion|strong="H4490"; for he loved|strong="H0157" Hannah|strong="H2584": but the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* had shut up|strong="H5462" her womb|strong="H7358".

And her adversary|strong="H6869" also provoked|strong="H3707" her sore|strong="H3708", for to make her fret|strong="H7481", because the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* had shut|strong="H5462" up|strong="H1157" her womb|strong="H7358".

And as he did|strong="H6213" so year|strong="H8141" by year|strong="H8141", when|strong="H1767" she went up|strong="H5927" to the house|strong="H1004" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, so she provoked|strong="H3707" her; therefore she wept|strong="H1058", and did not eat|strong="H0398".

Then said|strong="H0559" Elkanah|strong="H0511" her husband|strong="H0376" to her, Hannah|strong="H2584", why weepest|strong="H1058" thou? and why eatest|strong="H0398" thou not? and why is thy heart|strong="H3824" grieved|strong="H3415"? am not I better|strong="H2896" to thee than ten|strong="H6235" sons|strong="H1121"?

So Hannah|strong="H2584" rose up|strong="H6965" after|strong="H0310" they had eaten|strong="H0398" in Shiloh|strong="H7887", and after|strong="H0310" they had drunk|strong="H8354". Now Eli|strong="H5941" the priest|strong="H3548" sat|strong="H3427" upon a seat|strong="H3678" by a post|strong="H4201" of the temple|strong="H1964" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

And she was in bitterness|strong="H4751" of soul|strong="H5315", and prayed|strong="H6419" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and wept|strong="H1058" sore|strong="H1058".

And she vowed|strong="H5087" a vow|strong="H5088", and said|strong="H0559", O \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* of hosts|strong="H6635", if thou wilt indeed|strong="H7200" look|strong="H7200" on the affliction|strong="H6040" of thine handmaid|strong="H0519", and remember|strong="H2142" me, and not forget|strong="H7911" thine handmaid|strong="H0519", but wilt give|strong="H5414" unto thine handmaid|strong="H0519" a man|strong="H0582" child|strong="H2233", then I will give|strong="H5414" him unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* all the days|strong="H3117" of his life|strong="H2416", and there shall no razor|strong="H4177" come|strong="H5927" upon his head|strong="H7218".

And it came to pass, as she continued|strong="H7235" praying|strong="H6419" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, that Eli|strong="H5941" marked|strong="H8104" her mouth|strong="H6310".

Now Hannah|strong="H2584", she spake|strong="H1696" in her heart|strong="H3820"; only her lips|strong="H8193" moved|strong="H5128", but her voice|strong="H6963" was not heard|strong="H8085": therefore Eli|strong="H5941" thought|strong="H2803" she had been drunken|strong="H7910".

And Eli|strong="H5941" said|strong="H0559" unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken|strong="H7937"? put away|strong="H5493" thy wine|strong="H3196" from thee.

And Hannah|strong="H2584" answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", No, my lord|strong="H0113", I am a woman|strong="H0802" of a sorrowful|strong="H7186" spirit|strong="H7307": I have drunk|strong="H8354" neither wine|strong="H3196" nor strong drink|strong="H7941", but have poured out|strong="H8210" my soul|strong="H5315" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

Count|strong="H5414" not thine handmaid|strong="H0519" for|strong="H6440" a daughter|strong="H1323" of Belial|strong="H1100": for out of the abundance|strong="H7230" of my complaint|strong="H7879" and grief|strong="H3708" have I spoken|strong="H1696" hitherto.

Then Eli|strong="H5941" answered|strong="H6030" and said|strong="H0559", Go|strong="H3212" in peace|strong="H7965": and the God|strong="H0430" of Israel|strong="H3478" grant|strong="H5414" thee thy petition|strong="H7596" that thou hast asked|strong="H7592" of him.

And she said|strong="H0559", Let thine handmaid|strong="H8198" find|strong="H4672" grace|strong="H2580" in thy sight|strong="H5869". So the woman|strong="H0802" went|strong="H3212" her way|strong="H1870", and did eat|strong="H0398", and her countenance|strong="H6440" was no more sad.

And they rose up|strong="H7925" in the morning|strong="H1242" early|strong="H7925", and worshipped|strong="H7812" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and returned|strong="H7725", and came|strong="H0935" to their house|strong="H1004" to Ramah|strong="H7414": and Elkanah|strong="H0511" knew|strong="H3045" Hannah|strong="H2584" his wife|strong="H0802"; and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* remembered|strong="H2142" her.

Wherefore it came to pass, when the time|strong="H3117" was come|strong="H8622" about after Hannah|strong="H2584" had conceived|strong="H2029", that she bare|strong="H3205" a son|strong="H1121", and called|strong="H7121" his name|strong="H8034" Samuel|strong="H8050", saying, Because I have asked|strong="H7592" him of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

And the man|strong="H0376" Elkanah|strong="H0511", and all his house|strong="H1004", went up|strong="H5927" to offer|strong="H2076" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* the yearly|strong="H3117" sacrifice|strong="H2077", and his vow|strong="H5088".

But Hannah|strong="H2584" went not up|strong="H5927"; for she said|strong="H0559" unto her husband|strong="H0376", I will not go up until the child|strong="H5288" be weaned|strong="H1580", and then I will bring|strong="H0935" him, that he may appear|strong="H7200" before|strong="H6440" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*, and there abide|strong="H3427" for|strong="H5704" ever|strong="H5769".

And Elkanah|strong="H0511" her husband|strong="H0376" said|strong="H0559" unto her, Do|strong="H6213" what seemeth|strong="H5869" thee good|strong="H2896"; tarry|strong="H3427" until thou have weaned|strong="H1580" him; only the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* establish|strong="H6965" his word|strong="H1697". So the woman|strong="H0802" abode|strong="H3427", and gave her son|strong="H1121" suck|strong="H3243" until she weaned|strong="H1580" him.

And when she had weaned|strong="H1580" him, she took him up|strong="H5927" with her, with three|strong="H7969" bullocks|strong="H6499", and one|strong="H0259" ephah|strong="H0374" of flour|strong="H7058", and a bottle|strong="H5035" of wine|strong="H3196", and brought|strong="H0935" him unto the house|strong="H1004" of the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* in Shiloh|strong="H7887": and the child|strong="H5288" was young|strong="H5288".

And they slew|strong="H7819" a bullock|strong="H6499", and brought|strong="H0935" the child|strong="H5288" to Eli|strong="H5941".

And she said|strong="H0559", Oh|strong="H0994" my lord|strong="H0113", as thy soul|strong="H5315" liveth|strong="H2416", my lord|strong="H0113", I am the woman|strong="H0802" that stood|strong="H5324" by thee here, praying|strong="H6419" unto the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*.

For this child|strong="H5288" I prayed|strong="H6419"; and the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* hath given|strong="H5414" me my petition|strong="H7596" which I asked|strong="H7592" of him:

Therefore also I have lent|strong="H7592" him to the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*; as long as he liveth|strong="H3117" he shall be lent|strong="H7592" to the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w*. And he worshipped|strong="H7812" the \+w LORD|strong="H3068"\+w* there.
